stroud a sister of mrs ayres and william neal both of claremont is seriously ill at her home she is 75 and was a resident of this village some forty years ago her husband is also a claremoa man having been born on ihe old beelby homestead just off the sth concession sunday motor mishap no serious injury resulted on sunday from a collision between car driven by charles gostick of this place and a 55 years born in pickering township the former agnes pilkey she was the last of a family of 12 her first marriage was to chester wilson she was an active worker in chalmers presbyterian church she is survived by iter husband two children clarence and elizabeth at home and two stopchildren nelson raliam toronto and mrs e c veitch toronto rev j c robinson conducted the service assisted by rev richard davidson lifelong resident buried on tuesday in sliml year on sunday evening there passed away at the brierbush hospital stouffville a lifelong resident of this locality mrs ira powell she was in her 92nd year the late mrs powell was the former eleanor hayward and was horn just a mile and a half west of the village she attended school at altona 75 years ago after wards moving to uxbridge for a short time she was one of eleven children of whom only four now sur vive three brothers tobias walter and marshall and a sister mrs hannah bailey the late ira powell predeceased her some years ago al so surviving are three daughters mrs florence midgloy toronto mrs mcmurchy sask and miss laura there are five grandchildren and two great grandchildren although she had enjoyed remarkable health up until a couple of years ago her decline was rapid and finally this spring she was forced to give up her home here and be removed to the hospital for better care the funeral was held from the life assessment appeal to be heard in september the township cf pickering which recently filed an appeal against its equalized assessment of 1942 taxa tion as fixed by ontario county council in june will have its appeal heard by county judge d b cole man at whitby it is understood that the hearing would probably not take place until after the summer vacation the township with a natural in crease of24000 and a loss of 144- 560 on lands expropriated by the crown for the shell plant at pierc ing asked for a reduction in its equalized assessment of 90000 to be equally distributed over the county pickering bearing its share of the loss the township claims that 2500 acres of land assessed at 114300 so expropriated passed into the owner ship of the dominion government as from the 21st day of october 1940 as registered in the county registry office and that in consequence such properties are nontaxable for all purposes whatsoever as from such date in accordance with the british community
