toronto last week the deceased suffered a slight stroke a couple of weeks ago while attending the fun- ral of mr lloysts brother doug reynolds is now improving in health although he has been con fined to his bed until just recently miss s e evans who has been in rather poor health is improving mr and mrs reuben besse of stayner were here visiting with mrs besses brother mr fred evans last week one of our late cases of measles has been out of school for a few days his name is dougald mcmurchy mr and mrs sam stephenson of oshawa called on friends here re cently mrs h snitzel of london out also mr john howe of winnipeg were here on monday attending the funeral of their father the late richard how who passed away so suddenly last week the choir of the danforth ave baptist church toronto will be citizen richard how who died in what seemed tragic suddenness while at tending a masonic banquet in tor onto was buried with masonic hon ors service at the baptist church was largely attended the rev wal ter daniels and rev i e kennedy officiating the masonic lodge also conducted their ritual service in an impressive manner pall bearers were messrs thos patterson stewart graham irwin dopkiug lloyd johnson howard malcolm hugh pugh elderly resident struck by car mr tomlinson father of our local doctor x f tomlinson was acci- dectly struck by a car one evening last week while walking on the road just opposite the doctors home the car was driven by mr macmiddleton who failed to see the elderly pedes trian in the dark the circumstances concerning the accident are rather obscure but it is believed that mr tomlinson slipped on the road just as the car approached the injured man is in his soth year and his condition has been very critical although some slight improvement was seen the first of the week local young people win drama trophy the young peoples drama group of the claremont united church are the proud prize winners of a hand some trophy won for their drama presentation at whitby on saturday evening entitled the light at the window the local group are under the leadership of rev i e kennedy and competed for this county prize against oshawa and bowmanville the cup has been competed for among various organizations for a number of years but this years win is more gratifying in the fact that this is the first time claremont soci ety has competed we have been asked to wildcat businesses chief business of pickering town ship council during their regular session held in brougham hall on monday was the discussion on new bylaws to regulate the various wild cat businesses which were arising in the south of the municipality due to the erection of the new govern ment munitions plant there jos branigan president of this newly created pickering ratepayers association spoke to council concern ing the various businesses which this body deemed it necessary for the council to regulate and they includ ed trailer camps building bylaws transient traders cabs busses busi ness assessment willi regard to the trailers it was pointed out that every citizen in the village or nearby who had any available space would have several in his yard if they were not licensed in some way and that would create a sanitary problem as well as a nuisance one there were a dozen such outfits set up in the village al ready it was said the new building bylaw will prohibit the erection of shacks or tourist cabins for use as permanent dwellings it was requested that the transient traders license be in creased from 50 to 300 over a hundred cars are employ ed already in
