increase in the wheat processing tax at the present session of-parlia- ment reported in prospect would inevitably bring a rise of at least one cent a loaf in bread prices through out canada is the opinion of the fin ancial post proposals now before the govern ment at ottawa contemplate a fur ther 35cent increase in the pro cessing tax there is also the pros pect that the base wheat price will rise to s5 cents the bakers point out that since the original 15 cent processing tax was imposed the price of wheat has risen approximately s cents a bushel addition of a further 7cent increase in wheat prices plus a further 35 cents processing tax means 50 cents a bushel over and above the level at the time the original processing tax was introduced in terms of a barrel of flour this means an increase of approximately j230 per barrel since standard practice nets about iso loaves from each barrel a price increase of more than l cent per loaf would he justi fied mr ambrose stover proprietor of stouffville bakery has for many months realized the steady en croachments of increased costs on the fractional profit per loaf he has told the press that very soon the in crease of one cent per loaf would be inevitable the margin of profit he says is gone in the case of a large baking establishment such as canada bread figures presented last year by presi dent c h carlisle showed that at that time actual profit on a loaf of bread was approximately one quar ter of a cent a loaf this profit has now been more than wiped out it is claimed by the fact that bakers i have been forced to hear the present 15 per cent processing tax actually there is now no prohibi tion against an increase in bread prices if an increase in price can be shown to be justified there is nothing to prevent the wartime prices and trade control board from granting the increase ballantrae and reach qualify for finals reach hockey team having defeated uxbridge in a whirlwind game of the intercounty league at
