of course we took up collection for tho tellys wartime fund of nickels dimes and dollars to help them lick the hun send the tribune to absent friends how can britain afford to pay 90 cents an hour for unskilled labor draining oil from the crankcase of an army truck to be shipped to africa when the cry has been raised that she cannot afford to pay any better price tor farm produce from this country is the question which farmers of ontario county voiced at amass meeting held in the townhhip hall at brooklin last week farmers of this district want to know how they are going to keep in business in the face of a labor famine brought on by payment of high wages in war industry and with produce prices at low ebb and last night they besieged w h moore mp for this riding with questions which he attempted to answer in an tpen forum session in explaining the drop in the price of hogs sold to great britain mr moore had pointed out that britain must preserve her foreign exchange and is paying the best prices she is able to pay at the pre sent time he declared he did not blame britain for seeking the best prices she could get why is it then that man can leave the farm and get 90 cents an hour draining oil from a truck crankcase in war industry r- ray mclaughlin demanded how can england afford to pay an outrageous price through a war contract for a thing like that when we are told we cannot expect better prices for agricultural products be cause sho cannot afford to pay it ho continued that i cannot say mr moore admitted the call was received for tanks and trucks and we are en deavouring to supply that demand question of value ernie webber president of the south ontario agricultural society in supporting mr mclaughlin in his argument stressed that it is not a question of high prices but one of full value for each dollar expended here farmers of this country are not unpatriotic in registering a com plaint mr webber assorted it is not a question of raising hogs at eight cents a pound we are willing to do all we can to help britain it is purely a question of value for money paid not a question of what britain has to pay if canada wants to sell hogs to britain at three cents a pound i say let us do it but dont mako the farmer suffer give him a fair price for fair value mr webber asked for an explan- at on of his charge that inexperi enced carpenter labor was employed at camp borden at 90 cents an hour and allowed to prolong the job and hold it back to make the good money last at the present prices a man makes a profit of about a dollar a hog and a mere boy can go into war work at an oshawa factory and make that money every gg minutes he is working mr webber claimed in little more than an hour- ho sets as much as a man gets for rais ing and feeding a hog for six months farmer gels short end w ii dryden prominent on tario county farmer pointed out that it is a problem for farmcr3 lo live under present conditions prices but costs of production are up the farmer seems to be pulling on the short end of the whiffletree mr dryden asserted everything seems to be lopsided mr moore pointed out that the general wholesale prices increases has been only 7 vz per cent since war started while food wholesale prices scale shows an increase of 6 110 per cent farmers sons not paid i am glad to see farmers sons get work in the factories mr continued on page
