white gift service in the united church when a great display of good things was donated by the claremont people to go to the fred victor mission in toronto we reported soon after the big snow storm last month that many farmers in this vicinity had still not completed their threshing operations and a further report this week on the situation revealed that william echardt who does much of the threshing in this area still has 22 farms on his list yet to be vi3ited yluclf of ibis threshing is clover special christmas church services were held here on sunday and good congregations enjoyed the carol singing and special choir numbers messages were in keeping with yulctide the baptist pastor took for his subject gods unspeakable gift and in the evening a carol ser vice was arranged by miss mary forsyth word was recived here during the past week of the sudden death of mrs owen of toronto daughter of mrs p lee of claremont the death was most untimely in that mrs lee is ill herself and claremont and fred of oxbridge township equipment ilig asset in reviewing the financial position of pickering township at the last regular session it was revealed that the municipality now has some 20- 000 worth of equipment which in cludes over five miles of snow fence and 29000 posts snowfencing is made by the township at a cost of 3 si cents per foot road supt ward also reports that approximately 12- 000 yards of gravel have been re moved from the township pit during the past twelve months escapes serious smash by climbing tree mr floyd coates of claremont who recently held an extensive auction sale narrowly averted a ser ious collision one day last weekend near the west corner of the 5th con cession when he suddenly came upon two trucks parked on a narrow bridge taking in the icy condition of the road and the close quar ters on tlie road which prevented passing mr coates swung his own car into the ditch where it ended up against a tree he suffered no in jury although the car was removed for repairs need still stressed claremont ladies who have been doing such an outstanding work at the bowling club house may recon sider their decision to shut down their work after the completion of pyesent orders we understand that mrs will birkett on a recent trip to red cross headquarters in the city was told that many more articles of clothing are needed especially dresses for girls around the age of 14 claremont warworking group have made a name for themselves throughout the country by their continued effort with the result that perhaps no other place of its size can boast the same amount of work turned out as can the local organi zation options are accepted residents of the school section number one pickering whose farms are being expropriated by the government and who have signed options on their properties received word from ottawa that the options had been accepted and that settle ment would be made before the end of december it is expected that when the settlement is made final notice of the expiration of the period of esldence will also be given and seadottb qneetuufl s w hastings phone 169 stouffville those affected believe that they will be given thirty days to complete arrangements for vacating it will be remembered that the farmers in the area were advised some time ago that their properties would be needed and they were advised to look around for new farms or otherwise be prepared to vacate their premis es on short notice the area was re cently surveyed and will be used for a large industrial plant building of which will commence early in the new year trio held for car theft arrested after a brief search by oxbridge and oshawa police last thursday three young men are held in oshawa on a charge of a car theft chief constable william a vesey of uxbridge was called by lloyd mclllmurray service station operator who became suspicious when the three tried to trade a cam era of good making for a quantity of gasoline at his station chief vesey found the car and its occu pants parked on a side street in ux bridge when asked which one own ed the car one of the men jumped out and called to the other pair to follow a search was begun and one man was caught in a stable and a second aiding behind a store changes likely in pickering council although no one has come for ward in the township and stated their intentions of competing for the vacancies which now stand on the council there is a considerable agi tation to have another member from the north of the municipality we understand that heber downs who has held down the deputy reeveship for the past year but has forfeited his right to run in pickering because of the fact he has ceased to be a tax payer there is being pressed to bring himself hack into the township and continue as deputyreeve mr downs has created a most favorable im pression among the ratepayers since entering on his municipal career and many have voiced their regret to the tribune to see him giving up his place on the council however should things remain as at present and the deputy reeve ship remain vacant councillors robt ruddy and blake annis would more than likely contest this seat both having been in the council for the same period mr reesor has stated his inten tion to stand for reelection as reeve and there have been no reports of jnyone intending to contest this seat visit ed his mother on sunday miss barbara mairs celebrated her birthday recently by entertaining 8 little girls sunday school lesson lesson for december 20 jesus requires faithfulness golden text unto whomsoever much is given of him shall be much required luke 1248 the lesson as a whole it is most fitting as we come to the close of one of the saddest years for millions of people this earth has ever known that we should con sider the call of our lord to watch fulness and faithfulness as we wait for his return to put down iniquity and reign in righteousness over the world selfstyled optimists havo seen their dreams of world succeeded by the nightmare of world war those who thought that by social service ml a diluted gospel they were bringing in the kingdom have plans are all thwarted and satans power is being displayed as never be fore but all the terrible events that have succeeded one another with such startling rapidity only conbrm the faith of the bible- believer in the revel z of god in his inspired book the words of the lord jesus christ are being fulfilled ye shall hear of w and lumours of wars nations shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom matt 2467 all these are but the beginning of sorrows and point unerringly to the darker days yet to come which in turn will be succeeded by the person al return of him who loved to call himself the son of man matt 242730 in view of all these things what holinessshould charac terize us what devotion to christ and what loyalty to his truth verse by verse luke 1235 loins girded about it is the loins of the mind of which he speaks 1 pet 113 and the girdle is the truth of god eph 614 in other words as the fiowiug garments of the oriental are held in place by the girdle so every thought is to be brought into cap tivity to the obedience of christ 2 cor 105 and your lights burn ing the light of testimony is to be kept shining during the time of our lords personal absence verse 36 like unto that wait for their lord just as the friends of the eastern bridegroom waited eagerly for him to bring his bride back to his home where they could rejoice together so we are to main tain an attitude of expectancy while we wait for the return of our saviour verse 37 he shall gird himself and serve them we are called to serve in faithfulness now when christ returns it will be his delight to minister to those who have en dured and suffered for his names sake during his present session at the fathers right hand rev 321 verse 38 if he shall come and find them so the time of our lords second advent is a secret known only to god matt 2436 therefore the importance of being ever on the alert watching and waiting while serving in faithful ness that his coming may not take us unawares fullness of blessing will then be ours verse 39 if the goodman had known what hour the thief would come to unwatchtul ones the lords return will be unexpect ed and even unwelcome as that of a thief in the night rev 33 but it will he far otherwise to those who are instructed out of the word and are waiting for gods son from heaven 1 thess 54 verse 40 the son of man com eth at an hour when ye think not it is allimportant to keep this in mind and not attempt to set dates or pretend to know the exact time when the second a dvent will take place jesus has told us it is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the father hath put in his own power acts 17 verse41 speakest thou this parable even to all peter inquired as to whether the illustration used was for themselves alone or for all christs disciples the answer shows it was intended for all professed believers to the end of the dispen sation verse 42 that faithful and wise steward the true servant of christ recognizes that whatever truth he has received is a steward ship committed to him to he ad ministered for the good- of others and for which he must some day give account 1 cor 412 in that day faithfulness will he abundantly rewarded verse 43 blessed is that ser vant whom his lord shall find so doing there is always the temp tation to slothfulness and careless ness when the master is not pre sent but every employer values that type of service which is as con scientiously performed in his ab sence as when he is personally sup ervising it verse 44 he will make him ruler over all that he hath such a servant will be promoted to a stewardship because of his integri ty in a lesser position verse 45 my lord delayeth his coming the servant who forgets that his master may return most un expectedly and who behaves tyran nically and unfaithfully because he imagines his faults will never be dis covered is due for a rude awaken ing verse 46 the lord will come in a day when he is not aware re mark that js not exactly the lprd jesus hlmseff thatls liore in view christ is sponging in a pavs bio it is the lord of the wicked and sloth- toronto goodwood flashes walter davey 8 stanton ave toronto thomas mechesnay and family spent a few days with his newell is experienc ing a busy season at osbornes store on gerrard street she is no stranger and betrayed his trust but the lesson is too obvious to need em phasis or explanation verse 47 that servant shall be beaten with many stripes that which made his conduct so heinous was that he knew his lords will and prepared not himself the in dignant master will mete out the punishment to suit the offence gilchrist hartman elsie gilchrist toronto limis t kodgins stouffville christ with few stripes when one is ignorant of what the master expects he will bo dealt with more leniently athough ignorance does not excuse slothfulness but it is a principle of scripture that responsibilitiy and prvilege go together men recognize this in their dealings with one an other so does god himself who will j deal with each case on its merits the heart of the lesson when god commits any talent ability or knowledge of truth to his servants it is that they may use all for his glory during our lords pre sent session at the fathers right hand his disciples are called upon to represent and act for him here on earth this involves our recognition of service as a sacred trust or stewardship committed to us by- christ jesus to be administered for his glory and the blessing of a needy world and to be rewarded at his personal return to fail to act in accordance with the revealed will of god will canse us to suffer loss when we are called to give an account of our stewart at the judgment seat of christ where all our works will be tested by the fire of gods holiness 1 cor 31315 mas greetings to them all we
