few days last week rev william kendall made calls on the sick last week county unprepared to shovel snow the absence of snow plows on the toronto york roads last sat urday and sunday was the subject for many bitter comments as cars became fast in the snow and motorists found it hard going only those who had a most urgent call had any valid reason for motoring during the time and many of those people could have used other means of travel however motorists will have their pound of flesh the explanation given for not cleaning the roads was that the snow came so unexpectedly the county officials had not completed any contracts for doing the plowing we undersand that tenders had been called for plowing and were to be opened this week until that is completed it appeared that little headway could be made contracts for shovelling are usually let around the first of december hut this year that was not early enough to take care of the first big storm send the tribune to friends harry golden phone 237 stouffville ontario l esson a good xkigiillok golden text thou shalt love the lord th god with all thy lieart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy mind and thy neighbour as thyself luke 1027 before focusing our attention on the parable of the good samaritan it is well to have this entire tenth chapter before us in verses 1 to 24 we read of the mission of the seven ty disciples who were sent out by jesus to proclaim the fact that the kingdom of god was nigh those who refused the message were fore doomed because they did not real ize or would not face honestly the truth that gods anointed one was in their midst already his claims accredited by works of power such as no mere man had ever exercised the seventy returned exultant be cause of the manifest evidence of the presence of god with them en abling them in their measure to triumph over demon opposition as they went from place to place spreading the good new of the king dom tenderly jesus admonished them not to be overoccupied be cause of what they had been en abled by grace to do as his repre- senatives but to rejoice above all else because their names were en tered among those whose citizenship was in heaven it was at this point a certain lawy er that is one whose duty it was to expound the law of moses broke in not sincerely seeking the truth but in an endeavor to trap the lord into saying something that would expose him to justifiable criticism his question seemed honest but it betrayed a hard legal spirit that knew nothing of that grace and truth which came by jesus christ johj 117 the lord met him on his own ground and showed him in a graphic parable that all hope of earning gone he was not obeying even the eternal life was for him forever second table of the law much less the first so this story became not only the lawyers condemnation but a marvelous illustration of how- grace meets the need of the most helpless and forlorn verse by verse luke 1025 master what shall i do to inherit eternal life no one would ask such a question who had any true sense of his own lost con dition it is impossible to obtain eternal life by doing no one can be justified by works of rom 320 and eternal life is a gift rom 623 verso 26 what is written in the law this man was suposed to be expert in the law as given through moses christ mot him on his own giound and challenged him as to what the law itself had to say in that law it was written which if a a man do he shall live in them lev is 5 and a curse was pro nounced upon him who tailed to do this deut 2726 verse 27 thou shalt love the lord thy god and thy neighbour as thyself the lawyer epitomized the law in two commandments which include all the ten he quoted ten he quoted from deuteronomy 65 and leviticus 1918 verse 28 this do and thou shall live thus jesus used the law to expose the mans true con dition he had already broken it therefore for him there could he no hope of obtaining life by obedience if conscience had been active ho would have realized the hopeless ness of his condition verse 29 willing to justify him self he was in no mood to take his true place as a sinner before god so he sought to parry the lords homethrust by asking who is my neighbour if he had not yet found this out he only accentuated his own perilous state so far as law was concerned he might better have inquired who is my god and sought his mercy verse 30 a certain man went down in this story jesus portrays the case of the natural man whoso course is ever downward this man was traveling from jerusalem the city of peace where johavah had set his name to jericho the place of the curse- josh 626 robbed of all that he held to be of value he lay wounded and helpless on the way side he needed mercy not law verse 31 there came down a certain priest the priest represent ed the spiritual side of the law but he could do nothing for one defiled in his blood lev 211 so ho rassed by on the other side lest his own ceremonial cleanness should be narred the first table of the law brougham messrs thos and donald beed and miss may stephenson spenf tuesday last in georgetown the attendance at velvet with pink roses after a trip to ottawa the coupl will live in brougham the bridi went away in a brown and gree ensemble nothing for a helples could do sinner verse 32 likewise a levite he represented the service of till law which included ministry to th needy deut is 67 but h though he came over and looke upon the suffering traveler evident ly concluded he was beyond his hel and so he too passed by the secon table of the law could do nothin for this needy one verse 33 a certain samaritan here was the last person on earti from whom a distressed jew mlgb have expected mercy this samari lan came to the man and had con passion on him it is easy to se christ pictured here coming dow to the place in- which sia had le mon helpless and undone his hea filled witli love and sympathy verse 34 took care o himj the samaritan did the neighbor part to the full he dressed tlj poor victims wounds appllc medicaments and provided tlj means to take him to an inn whet he became chargeable tor his cari it is a moving and tender picture divine grace working in one who the jews despised verse 35 take care of him when i come again i will repd thee the past was mot and tl future provided for even so has tl lord jesus dealt with us all that done for his own will be well i paid when he returns as ho sure will heb 1037 verse 36 which was neig hour could any question haj better exposed the selfishness of thj lawyers heart whose own inqui had showed how littlo ho had entej cd into the moaning of the law 1 cited so glibly verse 37 go and do thou wise love is the fulfilling of tl law rom 1310 if the lawyj had been honest with himself ai wrh god he would have cried have failed already what hope there now thon our lord woul doubltless have unfolded to him to nicodemus the grace of god who gives eternal life to all who b lleve on his son john 3141c but this poor selfrighteous legfj 1st apparently failed to get the i tended lesson and so he passos the scene unbroken and unsaved w
