eight to ten pages average circulation 1400 subscription rates per year in advance in canada 200 u usa a v nolan jp editor and publisher editorial comment well done stouffville the red cross supporters in stouffville are to be congratulated for the splendid manner in which they re sponded to the call to support the drive to raise 2000 as our war effort last week the writer detests canvassing for funds but as one of those who undertook to inter view certain prospectstthe ordeal proved a pleasant undertaking everybody received us in a cordial manner and stood ready to play their part in subscribing in such a wholehearted manner that the top was reached before saturday night likewise the canvassers outside the village in whitchurch markham pickering uxbridge and every where else reported splendid reception at almost every home therell always be an england is the firm belief of our people and they stood ready to back up their belief hybrid corn resists borer corn borer which has devasted some districts is not yet fully controlled and a good deal of it is in the immedi ate locality speaking to the tribune on this question mr w m cockbum district representative of agriculture at newmarket he said in york county we have quite a number of farmers who are trying out the hybrid corn this year and we have checked on the corn borer infesta tions in any fields of this corn and fined a marked differ ence in the damage in the- hybrid there is very little break- down and only about onethird as many borers present mr cockbum strongly recommends that farmers should visit any field of hybrid in their territory before it is all cut it is also recommended that stalks and stubble should be burned rather than left in the field one standard can heres an item of news which should be of interest to everybody after january 1 1941 the tin containers of fruits and vegeables james preserves jellies marmalade fruit and vegetable juices will be standardized which means that all manufacturers and packers of fruits veget ables and allied lines will put up their products in tins of specified sizes and having specified weights in the past there has been a multiplicity of contain er sizes not because packers wanted many sizes but be cause they had to meet competition especially in foreign markets now the federal government has decreed that sizes and weight of contents must be standardized are you collecting tax thousands of canadians this month under the national defense tax regulations paid income tax to the dominion government for the first time the exemptions allowed 600 for a single person and 1200 for a married one are considerably lower than those for the income tax proper consequently the new impost affects many people hitherto income tax free as far as the dominion govern ment is concerned this tax in the case of persons drawing salary or wages is to be deducted at the source where at all possible and remitted by the employer to the district inspector of income tax by the 15th of the month following that in which the salary or wages are paid the first payment due september 1 covers the period from july 1 to the last pay day in august everybody employing a maid butler chauffeur etc on a permanent basis or a charwoman laundress or garden er by the day should collect any national defense tax due on the wages paid in such cases a valuation of board and lodging supplied should be added to wages to determine the full income for tax purposes take for instance the case of a maid living in the house subsistence supplied should be regarded as part of the income valuation of the board and lodging supplied is left to the discretion of the employer who is expected to be fair regulations issued by the income tax department submit values of 3 to 6 a week for the guidance of em ployers naturally the accommodation of a girl working in a house where she has a private sittingroom bathroom etc is worth more than that of a girl sleeping in an attic room if wages plus subsistence have a total value of over 600 in the case of a single person without depend ents she would have to pay national defense tax the same would apply in the case of a man if the amount charged for subsistence by the employer is considered too high the employee can appeal to the income tax authori ties in the case of married employees the employer is required to collect national defense tax at the source only when the income paid including wages and subsistence exceeds 1200 a year farmers whether hired help or owners and renters are liable for the tax and township treasurers have to de duct it from their pay cheques from these men working on roads if the rate of pay on an hourly basis would come within the bracket on which tax is collected they therefore have to know whehter each working man is married or not it has added a lot of work to the already onerous duties of these officials x on ousi mcui boa midnapore alberta sept 23 1940 the tribune before leaving home i promised to write to you letting you know what i thought of my journey to calgary by airways i am sorry that i have been so long in fulfilling my prom ise the plane trip was fine and very comfortable after being seated in a nicely upholstered chair suitable for sitting upright in or reclining for sleeping our hostess handed us a daily paper package of chewing gum a package of cigarettes and matches after passing north bay she brought in a small tray on which was placed a cup of tea and a plate of sandwich es for any person who cared to par take of them some did and some did not afterwards she presented us with a very comfortable blanket in case we should feel cold during the night and i thought that a pretty good send off we had a very pleas ant drive till near winnipeg where we ran into a storm which shook us up some but after rising higher we soared above the storm laden cloud and had fine sailing again although we made six stops on the way we reached calgary on schedule time 2200 miles in just twelve hours i found mrs morton my daughter waiting with a car for me two weeks after landing here my daughter and i drove to banff and from there by the wonderful new highway to jasper town spending five days amidst the grandest scen es of snowclad mountains and lakes sixty miles before we reached jasper at a point six thousand five hundred feet up and just within a half mile of the beautiful columbia ice field there is a very fine hotel and here we sat with stouffville ontario september 2 1940 dear sir in regard seventy five to the religious in struction in the schools i would like to add my views with the many others no doubt you have received religious instruction i take to mean study of the bible no creeds or doctrines and i think it is bound to come sooner or later the homes have neglected to teach diligently moral instruction which is the knowledge of god the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom psa 11110 we realize as never before that the power of any nation is the intelligence and moral of its people our father demanded physical instruction as well for the youth of our land all scripture is given by inspiration of god and is profitable for doctrine reproof and for connection for in struction in righteousness that the man of god may be perfect thoroughly furnished unto all good works 2 tim 31516 the en trance of gods word giveth light and understanding to the simple psa 119130 faith is the gift of god eph 2s and cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of god rom 1017 jesus said we do err in not knowing the scriptures nor the power of god mark 1224 the word of god is quick and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword heb 412 students could be taught in cus toms of the times geographical settings the heroes of the bible the life of the prophets and their message the life of christ and his ministry on earth his miracles and parables the lords prayer the down to dinner beatitudes jesus death and his other tourists i esurreetion and his coming again mostly americans the glacier there is beautiful and some of the cars drove down to the edge of it where travellers scrambled on to etc i cant believe that any parents would object to his or her child receiving the word of god in the the ice for a walk we had been bible it would not necessarily need climbing up if or some time to this a minister the power is in the place and had a down grade to i word not in him that teaches it travel from there but reached jasper at 430 pm and secured a nice cottage on the bank of the athabasca river on the opposite side of which is the beautiful jas per lodge owned by the cpr co here we spent the night next morning we drove out sixteen miles to mount edith cavelle up this moutain ciimbes a roadway seven thousand feet and rather an excit ing drive as there are six switch back turns and without any pro tection from the outside at the snow line it is a wonderful sight but it all requires great care in driving and the altitude is a little too much for comfort for some the weather was very warm till last week when we had heavy rain threshing was to start today but another wet sunday holds every thing for another week i cannot be gin to speak of some of the grand drives and the wild animals we saw along the roads through the mountains and as it is now train time i must stop or i may get home before my letter arrives j w ratcliff god speaks to us through his word it is the sword of the spirit eph 617 imay it never be said of our coun try that there is no knowledge of god in the land but rather may the earth be full of the knowledge of god 2 peter 12 uxbridge twp reader under forced draft during the summer the tex tile plants have been operating under forced draft and pouring out articles of when they are right close or overhead of us but most of us seem to get a lot of fun out of it but it wasnt quite so funny for three of them the night before last we had ten casualties two died immediately and the third before daylight the rest are recovering alright although one fellow will have to lose his right leg but that is all the damage that has been done since we came back from france so il think we have been pretty lucky in our regiment some of the others have suffered a great deal more well we have been camped out in tents for the last two months and we have had some wonderful weather lately for it although it is plenty cool at night but i guess that it is better than the hot sultry 3hp itllag 3m located on second floor of former mansion house spacious dining room
