demands hoxesty toward god golden text bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be meat in minehou se and prove me now herewith saith the lord of hosts if i will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it mai 310 verse by verse mai 37 ye are gone away from mine ordinances declension had begun very early and the children of the captivity had drifted into complacent disobedience and into positve unrighteousness from which god called upon them to re turn to the path of subjection to his word verse 8 ye have robbed ma in tithes and offerings he who does not recognize gods own- ship of himself and hold all his possession as a stewardship using them for the lords glory is a thief and a robber the tithes and offer ings were in themselves the ac knowledgment of divine owner ship verse 9 cursed with a curse the law pronounced blessing upon the obedient deut 2s 12 and a curse upon those who were disobed ient deut 2726 by neglect of the law as to tithing the curse had fallen upon the people already mai 22 verse 10 prove me now here with god waits to pour out bless ing upon those who obey his voice the windows of heaven will he opened to those who recognize his claims and yield to them in loving subjection this is a principle that abides whatever the dispensation verse 11 i will rebuke the de- vourer for your sakes because of their sinful neglect of his ordinan ces the remnant were left exposed to the craft and cruelty of their foes led on by satan their great adversary zech 31 god pledg ed himself to stand between them and the enemy if they recognized his claims and obeyed his com mands prosperity and obedience go hand in hand verse 12 all nations shall call you blessed when israel put god first they were a blessing to the nations when they forgot him and sought their own glory they became a curse jer 249 through them the name of god was blasphemed among the gentiles rom 224 whereas it was gods will that they should be the means of making his goodness known and others thus be attracted to him psa 671 2 verse 13 your words have been stout against me xotfcing is sadder than the effrontery of those who profess the name of the lord yet willfully walk in and seek to defend their own ways the harden ing of conscience that results from persistent disobedience makes peo ple utterly unaware of their true condition and always results in self- justification verse 14 ye have said it is vain to serve god the disobedient soul always questions the import ance of heeding the voice of god and is ever ready to attribute his unhappy circumstances to some other cause than his otvh -wfllfnll- ness he is prone to insist that there is no positive proof that god rewards the righteous or chastens the evildoer he would if he could rule god out of human experience verse 15 they that work wick edness are set up because the un godly seem to prosper at times more than the conscientious ser vants of god the natural tendency of the unbelieving heart is to glorify selfwill and to suppose that true happiness is found in choosing ones own course instead of in subjection to the word of the lord verse 1g a book of remem brance was written god may seem to be an indifferent spectator of our trial3 and conflicts but it is not really so his eyes are over the righteous and be takes note of all their ways psa 16 it is charac teristic of those who reverence his name to seek fellowship with others of like spirit such gatherings are prescious in his sight and he records all the names of those who thus endeavor to honor him verse 17 when i make up my jewels in the day of manifesta tion their reward shall be sure and when god deals in judgment with the wicked he will spare his own car ing for them as a loving father who delights in his obedient child ren verse 18 discern between him that serveth god and him that serveth him not there may not appear to be any cleancut dividing line ibetween the righteous and the wicked now but the day shall de clare it 1 cor 313 and make manifest who and what are of god and who and what are opposed to him the heart of the lesson the call of malachi is to self- examination in the light of the revelation god has given of his mind in his holy word that word is the standard of judgment not our thoughts about it it is of supreme importance that we listen when he speaks and that we do not atempt to reply against him rom 920 or to excuse or justify our misbe haviour on any ground whatsoever when he makes known his will our responsibility is to obey and that without fear or question this is the path of blessing and assures the divine approval only thus can we be wellpleasing to him who has re deemed us season opens june
