mrs robert mcleod entertained friends at their home here during the past week mr and mrs cecil storry have both been on the sick list now for nearly a month mr and mrs robert carter of toronto visited baseball series on the gospel miss viola forsyth is pro- gressing favorably following an operation which she underwent in st michaels hospital last weekend mr william hill was remov ed to a toronto hospital last weekend for an xray mr hill has been in rather poor health for some time this wednesday afternoon there will be a canvas made by the salvation army for their war work campaign a com mittee was in the village recent ly and arranged with local citij zens to carry out the canvas miss vivian sadler of black- stock has been visiting her grandmother mrs w jones and her aunt mrs esther palmer we understand miss sadler is organizing a music class in piano we understand the junior bible class organized a short time ago in the united church is making steady progress the class was formed especially for newly married couples and is proving a success mr and mrs dick cooper were home over the weekend marking their first wedding anniversary a number of guests were entertained on saturday evening- by mrs coopers moth er mrs- n f tomlinson the claremont checker club held a tournament in the com munity hall a week ago a num ber of neighboring players were invited but owing to the bad weather few attended the ladies aid provided lunch on monday wednesday and friday evenings preceding easter there will be meetings held in the two churches the first two nights the gathering will be in the baptist church while on wednesday the con gregations are asked to assem ble in the united auditorium the missionary society of the united church will hold their meeting in the ss room son of the late jacob caster he was of a fam ily of ten children his father was the third settler to locate in goodwood and the family is remarkable for its longevity every member but one reaching the seventy mark however the deceased was the last sur vivor born on the 4th concession he attended the old log school in goodwood and learned the sawmilling as a young man later he became known as an expert judge of horse flesh but his activities were many he built the claremont elevators which sold more than thirty years ago since the death of his wife six years ago mr caster has made his home
