his half sister miss catharine harper is his efficient housekeeper mr ball has another unmarried sister miss elizabeth ball at ailsa craig who is quite active al though over 80 years of age the town of whitby has gone modern and last week cleared the last vestage of telephone wires from its main street port perry did a similar job a year ago some of us would be lone some for the sight of the old telephone poles and the overhead wires if they were ever removed fromview in this town but after all we suppose the day will come when there will be a demand for a change here too the local chapter of the eastern star sent out a liberal supply of christmas cheer boxes which coupled with the good things dispensed by the womens institute must have reached every home in town where there was a shutin a needy person or someone else who was worthy of such rem embrance its a great thing to have such organizations in a community and their activities in this line are hailed with ad miration by one and all mr and mrs a s collins had christmas dinner at the home of her daughter and soninlaw mr and mrs jim mccowan at mal vern there were sixteen sitting around the festive board only one absentee in the will take full advantage of the ex tension to get in their news just now there is a strong de mand for more news from gormley which gives us a chance to say that farmers would take advantage to call up the correspondent or the office direct and request any items they have added to the weekly budget of the correspondents mr fred meyer of detroit spent the holiday with his sister and brotherinlaw mr and mrs henry mcmullen and other friends in and around stouffville the years never seem to make any impression on some of our veteran farmers for in stance for the holiday mr har mon yake with his during the past eight years customers are from coast to coast and as his post card advcrtisment reads you have not really seen america until you have seen cape cod and we suppose pops chicken pie archives of this town forbidding the use of walks for such purposes we are willing to admit that the walks are much safer for riding on that the roads in these days of motor traffic nevertheless when the practice is tactly per mitted those enjoying the priv ilege ought to be careful when meeting people by riding slowly and dismounting if necessary we notice that in some muni cipalities the practice is not allowed at all and only last week in one municipality several fines were handed out for breach of law the literary society of the stouffville continuation school held its third annual
