reeve charles hooper was laimed for 1940 without a single name in opposition being their claimed for a third time third acclamation all is quiet in uxbridge twp the township of uxbridge never held a more quiet nomin ation than the one last friday only a handful of ratepayers assembled and interest seemed lacking there were no names placed in opposition to the old council which being duly nomin ated was given an acclamation reeve r e ashenhurst says that his strength has never real ly been tested as he came into the reeveship on an acclamation and now gets a return for a se cond trip the snowplow and wing to be attached to the power grad er now owned by the municipal ity the new snow plow and all attachments cost 1175 and will be ready for snow work in a week several tenders were re ceived at this meeting but the firm making the grader obtain ed the order for the plow there were no tenders open ed for truckers to operate a snow plow of their own purch ase hence nothing was done with respect to the purchase of a second plow it is likely the council will now buy a second plow and call for new tenders to operate it by truck fridays nomination meeting at vandorf was the smallest for many years in the town ship of whitchurch probably because it was a forgone con clusion that the council would be returned by acclamation which proved to be quite right there was practically no critic ism against the work of the council hence a most cordial and friendly feeling prevailing the acclamation returns the same council for the third year this is the ninth consecu tive time i have taken part in a nomination meeting said reeve earl toole as he pro ceeded to give an intelligent account of county affairs he emphasized the change of policy in the county whereby in 1932 there was a deficit of 171- 94777 as against this year clos ing when the county on its pay as you go plan owned nothing excepting a small deficit on road account as a result the county rate is down to 54 probably an all time low the reeve referred to the many municipalities who pay their county levy in advance and obtain a discount of 4 per cent in whitchurch where taxes are not due until dec 15 they could not take advantage of this saving he wondered if taxes could be paid in instal ments like in other places which would have a further effect of reducing bank loans changes in secondary educa tion costs threatened to add an additional 1600 on whitchurch one of seven municipalities in in the county to be bumped up if the new arrangement goes through coming to local affairs mr toole pointed out there was a surplus on this years opera tions of 10596 as well as a substantial reduction in bank overdraft which he pointed out would be more than wiped out if all tax arrearages were paid up as it is the penalties on tax arrears takes care of the bank carrying charges mr toole though the council took a forward step this year in buying a power grader at 5500 he thought he was the last on the council to favor the scheme and did so when the treasurer continued on page 8 third consecutive acclamation for markham council a complete acclamation in markham township last friday at the nomination was the third consecutive year the old council has been returned according to clerk charles hoover the smallest assembly of ratepayers which he could re call gathered for the annual meeting a bare handful was present to hear the returned councillors review the years work reeve rennie who was first to address the gathering received his fourth consecutive acclama tion while his colleague deputy- ac- mr rennie did not know whether he should deplore the slim crowd as a sign of disinterest among the ratepayers or that they were well satisfied with the way the affairs of the municipality were being handled by the present council equilization of our assess ment has increased he said but owing to the increase being due to value of markham building having increased the situation was favorable mr rennie reviewed various phases of the county workstat- ing that hospitalization was down 2756 over the previous year and that the county was to be congratulated on its roads he upheld those who hold to the belief that county councils should be maintained stating that should the administering continued on page 2 summer residents lose daughter hugh boyd drover by w c brillinger and d holden d
