considerable havoc in the west- end of stouffville about 10 am on sunday morning putting qiit the hydro service in that part for several hours it struck the grist mill near the mansion house and tore off part of the wood roof went down through the building and left in its wake a strong smell of sulphur fortunately the building was not damaged every electric service in the westend business block was damaged meters blown off the wall and fuses burned out by the wholesale twentyfive street lamps were blown to pieces leaving in many cases no trace of the bulb whatever many homes on church street obrien avenue blake street and west beyond the tracks were without power as the fuses gave out under the heavy flash which was follow ed by a tremendous crash of thunder such as has not been heard for many a day in the kitchen at mr truman holdens the ceiling fixture was blown into a thousand pieces while a wire holding up the kitchen stove pipes was sizzled up mr and mrs holden were in the kitchen attempted to rob the store of reeve a e weldon on tuesday night he was awakened by his watch dog but could not find anyone about however in the morning it was discovered where thieves had removed the screen from the rear window and prepared to force the sash up working from a pile of boxes that had been carried to the spot evidently the continual bark ing of the dog frightened the thieves away in church township for the past 25 or 30 years james neil died suddenly at york county hos pital newmarket on friday last following a stroke the pre vious tuesday he was 76 years of age and had lived at
