ontario eight to ten pages average circulation 1375 subscription rates per year in advance in canada 200 in usa 250 a v nolan jp editor and publisher notes and comments thanks due flower folk officers exhibitors and supporters of stouffville horticultural society should feel proud of their efforts in staging the fine exhibition put on in the arena last week not only the fair itself was worthwhile but back of it all there is the outstanding and important fact that people are being made flower conscious and trained in a love for the beautiful this fact in itself makes the society an indespen- sable part of our community people are growing flowers here today and are learning about them who would other wise never have produced one bloom had the society never been organized it all adds to the beauty of life the beauty of our homes and gardens thus to president george saunders and his officers we say thank you and in this we should be joined by the citi zens who do little or nothing to encourage or promote the work of this worthy agency for the beautification of stouffville trapping the speeders citizens in general will be glad to note the activity of police in york county in their effort to stamp out the reck less driver of motor cars it may be true that eight deaths in ten days aroused the powers that be but they are awake and things are happening forty speeders on the 4th con cession west of stouffville were bagged in short order last week speed traps are being set up for it is realized that traffic cops cannot patrol every mile of road and besides when motorists see these officers they slow up only to race at breakneck speed again when they think an officer is not around we are glad to be informed that this method of getting the highway killers is being instituted as it is the only way to hold things down those who were caught on the 4th concession will not likely be breaking the law again there are many more who need to be given the jolt of a court fine there is no excuse for motorists exceeding the 50 mile an hour limit new grades were popular the new curriculum introduced last fall in the first six grades of ontario schools was popular with teachers and pupils alike music art and poetry have a new place in the development of the younger generation the new philosophy of education says away with the cut and dried teaching of history and arithmetic lets have fewer historical dates and more training in the artistic and social studies let us teach how happy and comfortable homes and successful living are more a matter of human relationships than bricks and mor tar and a big bank account as an indication of the greater interest in the new order children are taking a renewed interest in studies this was indicated in a noticeable manner last term when the atten dance in stouffville secondary school advanced from 85 to 142 what the new term will bring forth in another two weeks we only have an estimate however the indi cation is that the attendance will not fall off but rather in crease over the all time high of last term the more stouff ville school is patronized by pupils from outside the village the less it costs these ratepayers to operate reward for assistance to police attorneygeneral gordon conant who has instituted or suggested a number of impoitant changes in connection with law enforcement one of which is the giving of a reward to any peison who willingly assists the police in the detec tion and punishment of crime is working in the right dir ection although it is difficult to understand why a reput able citizen of a community would hesitate to inform the police of anything that might assist them without even a thought of remuneration however it is well known that considerable sums of money are paid to stools men who are familiar with the haunts of known criminals and their ways and who give valuable information from time to time so that it is not out of place to give rewards to people who feel that they owe it to the community to divulge any information which might lead to the clearing up of some crime which otherwise might not be cleared up there are those who take the stand that they are not policemen much less would they become informers but these people are laboring under a misconception of what is asked of them they are not expected to be policemen but from time to time certain information might come into their possession which would aid the police in their quest for a criminal and in such cases they could quite easily tip off the police and sill remain in the background too often there is sharp criticism of the police for their failure to solve a crime committed in their community when the critics might be carrying around valuable information and saying nothing about it many serious crimes could be prevented if those who commit them knew that if they made slightest slip they might be apprehended or if they mistrusted any member of their gang a criminal is inher ently a coward it does not take much sometimes to subdue him if he is cornered and that is why he carries a gun as without one he would be helpless before most men by giv ing information to the police people are proving their right to be citizens they are the ones who pay the salaries of the police but that is no reason why they should stand aloof and refuse to assist them when such help is needed if more people would fall into line and freely give assistance to the police there would be less major crime in the countrv horticultural society prize list continued from page one mauve mrs doten mrs w timbers mrs you ever try driving along the highway with your lights on low beam and notice how many on coming motorists have the courtesy to dim their lights if you havent we would advise that you try it whether our motorists are dumb dont care a hang or are so wrapped up in themselves that their brain is not working we do not know but we do know one thing they pretty gener ally refuse to practice the common courtesies of the high way dimming headlights is not a very laborious task but a most necessary one for safe driving after years of experience most of our drivers have failed to practise this courtesy
