year the affair is under auspices of the county lodge and not just an individu al lodge and it is expected to increase the interest several bands are assured it pays to advertise in the tribune said mrs c e mac leod to this paper the other morning when telling us of the success she had in selling a coal oil stove offered through the columns of our paper the stove was sold by noon on the day the paper was issued and before the day was over five people were after it you may have something about your home that you wish to sell why not tell the people about it once a very familiar figure on the streets of stouffville which he has trod these three- quarters of a century ai pryne was in town again last thurs day it was the occasion of his 78th birthday and old friends were glad to see him looking even younger than he used to look ai makes his home with a niece mrs willis wideman 10th concession near lincolnville although so close to town he is not in the village very much but on his bhthday he was welcomed by many old friends who hadnt seen him in quite a few months ai is becoming one of the oldest living natives of musselman lake stock and we hope for him many years to en joy such distinction a new asphalt roof was put on the rear half of the shaw store the job being completed this week the entire block be longing to this firm has been generally improved with paint and other fittings myron anderson expected to be home from the hospital in toronto this week having made good recovery it was found that his trouble was flu which seemed to take the strength from is arms but he has since regained his muscle an unfortunate accident occurred at the crosier reunion held at port perry on dominion day when mrs william malloy was struck on the forehead by a baseball bat which flew accidentally from a players hand during the festivities mrs malloy the former erla crosier received a deep gash on the head and injury to her eyes mr and mrs ambrose stover motored to stayner and spent sunday at the mbc camp there norma and gladys who have been spending the week- at camp returned home with their parents we hear almost daily com plaints about speeding on main street and one of these times a bunch of blue papers will be issued as the public is demand ing action the introduction of speed traps once considered a mean trick is now favored and stouffville would be justified in doing something along this line to catch the reckless driver we hear quite a bit of favor able comment being handed councillor r e brown as chair man of the street committee responsible for cutting the long grass and weeds over certain neglected areas of the village we know it is only a pleasure for r e to direct such improve ments and when they are not done it is usually traced to a lack of funds in the towns strong box mr orlando forsyth resi dent of calgary for around 20 years and eldest son of our mrs ollie forsyth has secur ed a position in hamilton and is moving east again mrs forsyth is also a former resi dent of stouffville being a daughter of mrs nelson mow- der they will be able to enjoy more frequent visits to the old town here no doubt when they once get settled in hamilton where mr forsyth will be en gaged with a wholesale cloth ing house there the uxbridge times last week protested the practice of certain of its town people pair ing their cars on the main street of the town each saturday night thus taking up space that should be accorded to the out sider who comes to shop its a point well taken but an offence which stouffville people have not indulged in we have never heard of anyone in stouffville driving their car down town around 530 taking up a prom inent place at the curb then walking home to supper so that they would have the parking place reserved when they came down town in the evening we doubt if any merchants bring a passenger car down town in stouffville on a saturday night however the trouble in ux bridge has been experienced in more than one town their works live after them was a thought which ran throu gh our mind the other morning when we saw a light spring wagon passing along the street on which was printed the name of john mckinnon gardener and in smaller letters the name of w h todd maker the wagon was made for the late john mckinnon 30 years ago and the horse which was still looking fit is now 28 years old william mckinnon son of the former gardener himself grow ing gray with the years was in the drivers seat one need not draw conclusions that this is a broken down outfit far from it the wagon nicely painted is in perfect condition and the horse as sleek as a colt have you noticed that the yoyo has returned to its form er popularity probably you remember several years ago when everyone from 9 to 90 had one but apparently like every other fad it had its day but were told its coming back and from the number of enthusiasts on the street this must be so it is really amazing to watch an expert perform with this round piece of wood on the end of a string the history of it goes something like this about 500 years ago the nat ives of the philippine islands originated the sport they used it on a much larger scale how ever having a line of from 20 to 30 feet long attached to a large rock this was used in hunting and often in warfare since that time the weapon has gradually developed into what we know as the common yoyo which has been in existence for a few hundred years incidently yoyo means come jxack in the philippine language some of the tricks done by experts are very quaintly called spank the baby walk the dog brain twister skin the cat and so on isaac brillinger west end citizen will be 86 years of age on july 15 according to our records mr brillinger is an old whitchurch grove on saturday night people attended from a radius of 50 miles a variety program and amusements drew the approval of the large gathering in atten dance new coal sheds immediately north of the cnr station have just been erected for the use of price pugh central feed store who will handle the blue coal products accommodation is provided for keeping various sizes and grades of coal demand ed by the local public just when folks were saying the crops and gardens were seriously in need of rain a fine shower came along friday night it being one of the warm est nights of the summer many were caught sleeping on lawns and anywhere outside they could get there was a general scatter for cover soon after mid night when the rain came down accompanied by thunder and lightning although only a shower it appears to have been quite general in these parts and if repeated a few more times would be beneficial to the crops which are short and showing lack of moisture additional showers passed this way sunday evening domestic users in the town of aurora are warned not to use lawn hose more than two hours each night just as users in stouffville are confined to we know of no town where restric tions on the use of hose is not imposed the advice is for house owners to obey this order and see to it that their neighbor does likewise when the water is low the fire hazard is increased and the one who uses hose out of hours shows little concern for the safety of his neighbors pro perty mr noah baker one of our octogenarian citizens accom panied by his daughterinlaw mrs harvey baker have been spending a holiday in the north at the home of mr and mrs edw baker in haliburton a trip was made to north bay and calendar where they saw the quintz the five famous child ren were riding toy receiving the congratulations of his friends last thursday on the occasion of his 80th birthday retired and living in town for some years he farmed in whit church coming to this locality from reach township where mr and mrs taun started married life together in the utica district speculation has been raised on the possibility of stouffville having a peat bog with valu able fuel to mine from a bon fire started on stouffer street north of the christian church the firemen have had to visit the scene on different evenings where the smouldering fire seemed to be right into a root substance and making headway while it has never been care fully examined the material gives one the opinion that it is a peat bog of more or less dimensions storeys digestive tonic invigorates the digestive organs program for the july 1 cele bration this paper inadvertently omitted to mention the town orchestra which played for an hour while the large crowd assembled in the building their selections were especially ap preciated when the time of starting the main entertain ment was so long delayed the orchestra filled in the time in such a manner that the crowd did not become restless in the least recently we have been hearing numerous complimen tary remarks about this musical body that would make them feel puffed up if repeated too often announcing the official opening frisat july 1415 of
