in the affirmative in regard to daylight saving for the village of stouffville in your last issue the negative side was presented on monday april 24 the busi ness men discussed different topics the reeve of the village officiated the only headway made was in the discussion of daylight saving time for stouffville all who were there voiced their opinion for and again st the majority were in favor the reeve said he was opposed but if the majority of the business men were in favour he was in favour of passing a bylaw he appointed a committee of four to canvas the business men and have them sign terms cash no reserve a s farmer auctioneer business men which secured a large majority in favour of daylight sav ing time the petition was ably presented to the council by mr f l button and left for their decision the council after discussing the petit ion refused to grant the wishes of the majority and so the minority rules so far i was unfortunate enough to be one of the committee to be appoint ed by the reeve to circulate the petition but emphatically refused to act in the first place then after much perguasion aeluctantly con sented we certainly exceeded our expectations i am and i think i speak for the majority of those who signed in favour quite satisfied to abide by a majority even if it does not meet witlt my way of thinking but as it stands now i am very far from satisfied with the councils action the only solution that i can see now to settle the question amicab ly when the minority of business men and council rules is to circul ate a petition to all ratepayers and business tax payers to secure en ough tax payers to sign and force an election where fevery taxpayer will have an opportunity to cii3t his ballot tor or against then this council will be forced to abide by the majority as our laws are still democratic and cannot be treated in a dictatorial way by anyone it would consist of a straw vote which would mean that the clerk of the village would prepare a iballot for each taxpayer mail him one and have him sign and return by a given date it would only mean a little work for our clerks i dont think they would mind as the coun cil is quite strong on the clerk end the cost would only be printing the ballots and mailing in the preceding issue of this paper the negative side was discus sed one objection was the picture show would suffer i do not agree with that argument i think the picture show would benefit from the surrounding towns who would patronize it more the way it is now the farmer usually arrives in town too late for the first show and too early for the second show which means they see the last half of the main picture then wait to see the first half as to it being inconven ient for the farmer to do his shop ping i dont agree the farmers with very few exceptions can have their shopping done by the new time as well as by the old and it is not necessary for the farmer to go on daylight saving time be cause the village does one propa ganda statement the objectors re sort to is we are living in a farm ing community and must cater to the farmer we are not anymore in a farming community than other towns around us that have day light saving i think the inconven ience is imaginary the old slogan one hour in hed before midnight is worth two hours after and we would all have better health i am in favour of making things as pleasant for the farmer as any one i think there is no one any more deserving than the farmer who needs every consideration that can come his way tout who usually gets the least returns for his ef forts the farmer is the business man in the majority of cases that i have received my bread and but ter from directly and which i appreciate any of us who do it directly get it indirectly if the farmer could ibe more pros perous we would ajl benefit from it until farming conditions and prices are improved we will all suffer accordingly the business man in the village who says he is not in favour of daylight saving time because it will inconvenience the farmer does not consider that closing the stores every night in the week but one part of the year and every wednes day afternoon closed is much more of an inconvenience to the farmer i am not opposed to this system and the farmer has got used to it and doesnt find it any great inconven ience they will find the same thing will apply to daylight saving and find it is not necessary for them to change their time wo are practically encircled with other towns on daylight saving time there is not one of them that would want to go back to old time and they are in the same circum stances that we are the majority of business men canvassed that were opposed to daylight saving time made the statement that if the council would pass a by-law- closing tho stores at a certain hour they would certainly be in favour of daylight saving time so why not try it for one year at least yours sincerely the peter steckleys and willis lehmans motored to delhi to spend sunday and monday with relatives and friends there we are sorry to report that miss jennie carruthera to be on the sick list over the weekend truly this is the season for
