body of christ which includes all gods children in this dispensation of grace and local churches which are responsible groups of believers meeting togeth er for christian fellowship and testimony christ himself builds what he calls my church the building of local churches is com mitted in large measure to his ser vants as paul went from place to place when people were saved he was used by god to gather them in from the world and into the fellow ship of the churches or assemblies of god where they would be nur tured and edified and could main tain a testimony in their respect ive communities to his saving grace these churches were directly res ponsible to christ himself whilt they maintained communion with each other as representatives of the one glorified head in the be ginning there was but the one great circle of christian fellowship un happily divisions almost innumer- ahle have come in through human infirmity throughout the christ- ian centuries but the closer the churches keep to the divine pat tern laid down in the book of acts and in the apostolic letters to the churches the more we shall have the lords approval and blessing we cannot undo the mistakes of the past but we can cleave to the lord and the word of his grace and so be kept from much that is unscriptural and divisive acts 141 so that a great mul titude believed passing on to iconium the apostles found an opening for testimony in the jew ish synagogue where they gave such convincing witness that many both jews and gentiles believed the gospel and were saved verse 2 minds evil affected against the brethren the christ ians constituted a new brother hood which the world hated as christ has foretold note that it was tho unbelieving jews who aroused the animosity of the heath en against the disciples of christ verso 3 gave testimony unto tho word of his grace as the apos tles proclaimed the gospel the lord by the holy spirit gave power to the message and authenticated it with many miraculouss igns and wonders verse 4 the multitude of the city was divided how often has this been the result of faithful preaching when christ is set forth as the only saviour the lines are soon drawn between those who re ject him verse 5 as assault made un believing jews and unbelieving gen tiles however they might disagree upon other matters could join for ces in opposition to the gospel the apostles were specially singled out for bitter persecution verse 6 they were aware of it and fled this was in accordance with the instruction of our lord the dispensation had changed but the principle was still applicable they were not to court persecution nor to expose themselves to danger needlessly verse 7 they preached the gospel when they entered into the cities of lycaonia they did not change their message but contin ued to declare tho positive truth of the gospel the good news of salvation for needy sinners through the work of the lord jesus christ verses 8 to 18 tell how the peo ple of yystra astonished by the healing of a cripple would have worshipped paul and barnabus as gods had they not with difficulty restrained them verselo stoned paul they who would have adored paul as a god at one moment were ready to stone him to death the next when their prejudices were aroused by fanatical foes it is thought possible that the experience related in 2 corinthians 1215 may have occ urred at this time when his body was dragged out of lystra as dead verse 20 he arose up and came into the city his testimony was not yet completed and he was immortal till his work was done revived he returned to lystra for the night then left with barnabus the next day for derbe verse 21 they returned again after giving forth the glad tidings in derbe they returned to the three cities where thy had been so shame fully treated lystra iconium and antioch in order to build up their converts and conserve the results of their work verse 22 confirming and ex horting them to continue in the faith by careful instruction they confirmed the souls of the disciples and urged them to stand fast in what they had learned undeterred by persecution which as christians they had to expect in a world that had rejected god but in which his kingdom was being established in the hearts of believers and would not be displayed in manifested pow er and glory verse 23 tordained elders in every church they appointed suit able persons in each of the new churches to care for the flock and to lead them on in the ways which bo in christ by prayer fasting and needed ministry they sought to build up and then moved on else where commending these indige nous churches to the lords guid ance and protection the honrt of the lesson the security and growth of the churches of god depend upon their obedience to his word the person nel of these early assemblies was very similar to that found in practi cally the same circumstances today in themselves they were weak and unreliable but their confidence was in tho living god in his word he has given all necessary instruction for the confirmation and develop ment of his disciples both as in dividuals and in their church re lationships
