held at the home of mrs ben doten on monday afternoon it was decided to join with the markham and unionviile groups in a joint general meeting to be held in markham town hall on monday evening april 10 mrs percy waters of toronto will demonstrate floral arrange ments and the various societies will contribute numbers to the program it is hoped there will be a large number in attendance from this district a prelimin ary meeting of our society will be held at mrs dotens home next tuesday afternoon interested please attend all special services at mount joy special evangelistic services at the above church opened last sunday evening when rev r p ditmer of ohio delivered a stirring message to a large audience the service opened with a lively singsong led by the pastor the speaker used as his theme the great salva tion and argued this fact from the author his love his pow er and his promise a stirring appeal was then made to his hearers to accept this offered mercy and the meeting was dis missed by the pastor special instrumental music was ren dered by the lehman brothers of toronto while miss forbes and miss tattersall sang a duet all of which added greatly to the inspiration of the service mr lehman the pastor invited the public to these services which continue each evening saturday excepted mr and mrs benjamin lehman parents of the pastor attended sundays service an invitation the stouffville continua tion school will be hosts to the general public on friday evening march 31 from 8 to 10 pm demonstration classes will be held in science home economics and shop work displays of work by the students will be exhibited l c murphy ba principal percy familys j double bereavement news comes from vancouver of the sudden death of mrs maurice hampton daughter ox the late rev william percy former pastor of stouffville and i whose memory is ever green among those people who are still spared since his day among us mrs hampton was thej former lillian percy her death was sudden and shocking to her friends at the coast i where only last fall she united in marriage with the bereaved husband who is left mrs hampton died on march 18 she was twice married simultaneous with the an nouncement of the death of lillian percy hampton comes j the intimation from brooklin i new york of the death of walter r eaton former solici tor of the port of new york and husband of ella percy eaton another daughter of stouffvilles greatly beloved pastor of former days mrs eaton will have the deepest sympathy of all friends of the family here in her double bereavement mr eaton died on march 14 only last summer when the editor of this paper toured the pacific coast with a party of newspapermen we had the pleasure of meeting mrs hampton who at that time was only contemplating marriage she was accompanied by her sister miss elizabeth percy when we met the couple at the coast mrs hampton was the picture of health and her un timely death is hard to realize regarding the late walter r eaton new york newspapers paid him a great tribute as an attorney and former solicitor of the port of new york for 42 years at the time of his death mr eaton was associated with the law firm of hardin hess eden practising in manhattan he was born in bedfordshire england but lived in the usa i since early childhood j for 35 years mr eaton was a member of the south congre- gational church and a deacon for 28 years clerk of the church for eight years and assistant superintendent of the home bible class ho was active ii the affairs of the republican club and besides his widow four sons mrs william bryan the young couple ire locating in their home district invited to pour tea for mrs hepburn it is felt that quite an honor came to the womens liberal club this week when mrs harvey moyer was invited to pour tea at mrs hepburns re ception this thursday in tor onto the invitation was extend ed through a personal letter from mrs hepburn and while declining owing to the state of her health mrs moyer regards the incident as something quite out cf the ordinary on behalf of the local association which she has headed for some years now beloved mother buried amidst her scenes oo irs ella m stewart daughter of pioneer parents laid to rest on sunday members of rev william jated on monday percys churches and old friends frank malcolm g of the family will be deeply interested and grieved to learn of the double bereavement which this old family sustain the death occurred at her horn on thursday evening march 23rd of mrs ella matilda stewart in her 73rd year she had been in death was a stroke he was in his 58th year son of matilda and john lewis jonas was born on the old homestead on the third con cession of uxbridge where the family lived for 22 years they moved later to the west side of stouffville and jonas continued to farm here after his marriage to nellie brillinger daughter of mrs brillinger and the late henry brillinger she died 28 years ago leaving a family of young children who survive the father they are mrs walter jacobs of ringwood mrs arthur vanzant of the 10th of markham and miss mary lewis of stouffville and a son donald two sisters and two brothers also survive being mrs ed vanzant and mrs d meyer stouffville and albert and james lewis in peterboro jonas lewis possessed a very likeable disposition he was a shrued judge of animal flesh where the remains stayed for some time before they were identified it seems that a friend from oshawa happened into the morgue and seeing the body cleared up the mystery son of albert davis of stouff ville who conducted the dairy business here at one time bill as he was familiarly known liv ed at home and after his fathers death remained much of the time with his brother jack just west of town he later located in oshawa and toronto death was due to natural caus es and an inquest was not ordered besides his wife there sur vives three brothers of this well known fatnily being john asa and lewis mitchell of vancouver miss marjorie reg n at home and one son george of toronto in the twentyeight years that mrs stewart lived in stouffvflle she jxjoved herself to be a good citizen friend and neighbor the high esteem in which she was held in the com- late mrs rldaley buried thursday the funeral cortege for the late mrs r j daley is expect ed to arrive in stouffville this thursday afternoon around 4 oclock for interment in the local cemetery friends of the family here will join the funer al at the cemetery to witness the last rites at the graveside mrs daley passed away on monday march 27 at the home of her daughter mrs w c taylor 262 gjenmanor drive west toronto where the ser vice will be held at two oclock widow of the late r j daley who passed away two years ago mrs daley had been an invalid for some years although she survived to the remarkable age of 87 years her maiden name junior band supply a fine entertainment the stouffville junior band gain excelled themselves on friday night in another of their concerts one of the purposes of which is to raise the very necessary funds for the expen ses of the band in addition to the many familiar affairs ren dered by the youthful musicians was one special number led by band master lieut wiggins and composed by the boys regular leader mr m shenhall a guest xylophonist and accom panist from toronto supplied several popular numbers on the program while the local danc ing class of 5yearolds under miss mollie macgregor and including little fay oneill mary echurt marie farrell and kenny nash added tapdancing talent to the fine program which drew repeated rounds of ap plause from an enthusiastic audience band members num bering twentyseven and rang ing from eight to fifteen years are stanley schmidt grant turner stanley ball alice forsyth evelyn macdonald arnold schell harry schell dwight forsyth eugene pais ley bert paisley earl lehman ken jennings lloyd jennings wilbur smalley ken burkhold- er george wilkinson gary lewis stanley miller alfred maskell roy ward louis rax- lin jack harding fred pugh gordon forsyth albert smalley and ted williams good turnout at second sale despite the fact that a large crowd attended the auction sale on the john spence farm just north of the townline 6th con cession of whitchurch only a couple of weeks ago a second sa was well attended on thursday of last week to clear cut stock and goods not sold at the first sale mr snowball of markham bought the bay gild ing for 115 which mr spence valued at 150 while a team of mares sold to frank baker for 175 which the owner thought was a real christmas box how ever prices were high for imple ments grain sold well barley at 17c bushel and oats at 35c after 18 years on this same 100 acres mr and mrs spence are moving this week to stouff ville was lucinda bentley she being munity was testified to by her i the last of the farnilv who were pastor at the funeral service j among the pioneers in this dis- while she was of a quiet nature jjfict of recent time mrs she was always ready and will- made her home in tor ing to lend a helping hand she attended the united church and was a member of the womens missionary society the funeral service was con ducted by the rev l e atkin son assisted by mr r k vickers and rev ce mcleod and was widely attended by onto with her daughter surviving this venerable couple who were so active and played such prominent part in the development of stouffville are one son l russel daley at bittern lake alta and four daughters mrs c m mont gomery winnipeg mrs r c many relatives and friends the kottmeier edmonton both beautiful floral tributes were a wl are n silent testimony of love and re- s o g ohsted in spect the pallbearers weree peace river district and david horace and alymerl ta toronto gray wilbert william and grant layng besides her five children there survive to mourn her loss one sister mrs ira badgero of stouffville two brothers hamilton of minnedosa mani toba and russel of gormley j ontario ten grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren survive also local school staff entertain about forty teachers from district no 5 of the teachers federation high school sec tion held a regional meeting in stouffville on friday evening supper was served by stouff ville womens institute in the basement of the christian church principal ainsworth of york memorial school and dr h b freel chairman of the school board each spoke briefly mr downer of east york high school acted as chairman and principal l c murphy welcomed the guests and invit ed them to assemble in the school house across from the church immediately following the supper hour the visitors were shown the classes at work in the home economics and shop courses expressions of grati fication were heard and stouff ville generally was compliment ed on having progressed so far with the new courses about 40 pupils were in their places in the two classes for the benefit of visitors little lois weldon
