shalt love the lord thy god with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might deut 65 the lesson as a whole approach to the lesson this quarter we are to con sider the connection between the great foundation principles of religion and morals as set forth in the ten commandments and the teachings of the new testament in studying these topics we must not confound law and grace which are two oppos ing systems that never can be confused without doing violence to both see rom 116 but in every dispensation right is right and wrong is wrong- and the greatly increased light of the christian revelation does not in- valitdate anything of a moral or spiritual character made known in past ages under the law there were certain things which were commanded be cause they were right others were right because they were commanded so while believers today are not under law either as a means of justification or as a rule of law but are justified by grace and are called upon to walk in grace this does not give liberty to ignore what god made known in past ages as though all had now been superseded by christianity rather christian ity takes up and embodies in it self all that was spiritual in every era and adds much that was not previously known no dispensational change can trans form sin into holiness or right eousness into unrighteousness the basis of iniquity is selfwill and- that continues always the same the historical setting fifteen hundred years come in between the giving of the law of moses on mount sinai and the teaching of our lord jesus christ as recorded in the four gospels the law was given by moses but grace and truth came by jesus christ john 117 between the two we have the ministry of the prophets who were sent to emphasize the spiritual side of the law and following christs ascension the holy spirit continued his min istry verse by verse exod 202 the lord thy god the unity and personality of god the deliverer of his people is the first message of the law as given on sinai verse 3 no other gods idolatry is not a step upward in the socalled religious evolution of the race it is a distinct apost asy from truth once revealed israel a separated people were to be witnesses to the truth of the one god and so were to ab hor idolatry of every kind isa 4522 i am god and there is none else in isaiah chapters 40 to 48 we have jehovahs great controversy with idols ending with the solemn words there is no peace saith the lord unto the wicked 4822 salvation is only to be found in him who is revealed as the saviour god to mark 1228 which is the look unto him is to trust him first commandment of all many were questioning jesus and he had confounded them all now a scribe inquires as to which is of all the command ments the most important verses 29 30 the lord our god is one lord the saviour answers by quoting the great confession of deuteronomy 64 5 to this day this is rec ognized as israels distinctive creed it asserts as in the ten commandments the unity of the godhead and sums up mans whole duty when it calls upon him to give to god a love that is complete and wholehearted needless to say no one of adams race has ever fully obey ed this commandment conse- quently all are sinners needing a saviour verse 31 thy neighbour as thyself with the previous quotation jesus linked another from leviticus 1918 which embraces all of mans duty to his neighbor for love is the ful filling of the law rom 1310 but who when tested by this commandment can plead inno cent of violation of gods holy law see then james 210 verse 32 one god none other but he the scribe read ily assented to our lords declar ation god is one there is no other verse 33 more than all whole burntofferings and sacri fices it follows since god is creator of all things that to love and honor him and to love those whom he has made is to him of far more importance than any ritual service however venerable or authoritative vese 34 not far from the kingdom the scribe was not in the kingdom because he be lieved theie is one god see jas 21920 but he was a thought ful man and we can hope he saw the necessity of committing him self fully to god as revealed in christ though the record does not tell us that he did 1 cor 84 none other god but one the holy spirit through paul reiterates the same great truth and shows the folly of any form of polytheism which is back of all idolatry verse 5 there be that are called gods when men turned away from the living god they deified their own lusts the forc es of nature and various prin ciples which they thought they saw embodied in beasts birds and creping things rom 121- 23 but these are only vain imaginations and not real gods at all verse 6 one god the fath er now since christ has come to reveal the fathers name we who have been bom again know the almighty creator in that blessed and hallowed relation ship and we recognize in our lord jesus christ the eternal son one with the father in sub stance power and glory to whom we owe our life and our salvation the heart of the lesson the revelation of the one true and living god is the first of all the articles of our most holy faith in the begining man knew this truth but it was largely lost through sin which blinds the eyes of the heart to abraham it was made known anew confirmed to moses at sanai elaborated by our lord jesus christ and more fully ex pounded by the holy spirit the word of god throughout in sists on mans responsibility to know god and to come into living relationship and fellow ship with him mans chief end is to glorify god and to enjoy j him forever he delights to reveal himself to every honest seeker isa 556 7 special lesson topics truths the then comandments em body the basic principles upon which all civilization and true religion rest they set forth with amazing clarity and succinctness mans duty to god and to his neighbor but they do not show how a guilty sinner can be justified before god neither do they rise to the heights of the new testament revelation of holiness and righteousness as made known by jesus christ the revelation of the father not until jesus christ came was god clearly made known as the father of those who believe on his name in the old testament he is called the father of the nation of israel jer 319 and messiah is prophesied as the everlasting father isa 96 but it is through faith in christ that we now know god indi vidually as our father because we are made partakers of the divine nature 2 pet 14 the unity of the godhead is not denied but rather explained by the doctrine of the holy trin ity which shows us that the one true god exists in three adorable persons the father and the son and the holy spirit to each of whom is ascribed eternity of being omnipotence omniscience and omnipresence for the distinction of persons see isaiah 4816 matthew 28- 19 2 corinthians 1314 w davey 8 stanton ave a missouri editor recently re ceived a letter from a subscrib er
