through out ontario as a writer and lectur er on rural affairs speaking at the leaders institute held at pickering college last saturday the mps are not much im pressed with the idea of doing any thing for the farmers said mr mccready they dont sense the real needs of the country we need more agnes macphails agriculture must be made more profitable at the present time tiiere is an unbalanced state of affairs rural teachers receive about 500 a year while city teachers are paid 1500 a farmhand gets about 25 per month whereas the city milk- driver earns 35 a week things are in such a bad con dition because of the failure o have the right kind of schools the department of education could issue pamphlets monthly or quarterly to tell the people what is going on in educational work in other parts of the world and thus spread the nest ideas said mr mccready at the present time no leader ship is given in adult education by the education department years ago many young men attended the rural schools during the winter months some of these men later became well known in the business world in the opinion of imr mccready winter training schools should i provided for young people and they should also he enabled to attend winter classes at the universities without matriculation standing suc they are engaged in agricultural work for a large portion of the year they should be given some recogni tion school fairs are becoming com petitive instead of cooperative he said the principle of the fairs is very unsound very often the ex hibits have been prepared by the parents instead of the pupils the judges say there is always some crooked work that the united states should take her place beside creat britain u a determination to force peace upon a harassed and muddleheaded world is the contention of beverley baxter- canadian-borr- mp and nephew of our former citizen harvey lawsou in his london letter which appears in the march 15 number of macleans magaziue the issue of peace or war in the world depends whether america before it is too late pays some thing of her debt tc britain he states and continues 1 am not referring to mere trades mens debts on either side but to a debt so vast that it could not be computed in terms of money the ordinary american is no a world citizen he is sentimental kindly idealistic but clothed in a vast and selfsatisfied ignorance about the history of every country including his own he would be hurt and sincerely astonished to learn that his beloved country owes great britain that which could not be estimated in terms of all the wealth in the world 1 believe that if he were told of it he would be ready and anxious to repay i would endeavor to achieve a miracle at washington it would probably be madness even to think of such a thing but supposing the incredible happened and the im possible occurred supposing as a result of our conversation presi dent roosevelt went to the micro phone and made a speech somewhat along these lines my friends before i start my address tonight i want to tell you a little story many years ago this country was at war with spain iu the pacific in pursuance of our belligerent rights we had announced a block ade of manila harbor by our fleet now it happened that admiral chichester of the british navy was in the neighborhood witli a number of ships then a strong section of the german fleet turned up germany had her own ideas about the pacific being taken out of european hands and the german admiral sent word to the british admiral asking what he would do if the germans decided to force the blockade he expected or at any rate hoped that the british would re main neutral admiral chichesters reply was americas admiral writes from india dear anthiyur coimbatore dist south india january 193s friends as i look forward to serving our lord in this land during 193s it is with confidence that our lord will do great things for us hitherto he has done great things for us and he changes not the past year lias been one iu which i have proved the faithfulness of god all my needs have been supplied and i have enjoyed excel lent health in this land so ridden with disease many of you may have heard of the advance of our mission into the united provinces of northern india this truly is an area where a genuine need exists and we be lieve the lord is calling us out to meet this great need in the area we are entering the missionary occupation is less than one per million i do not believe such can be duplicated anywhere in the world today in our present day and age you may well ask how such a con dition exists but as i cannot ex plain such without an indictment of denominational missions and their methods i shall refrain at present with a view to my going to tliis new area at a later date i have been requested to study the language spoken there this is no small tpsi and i covet your prayers as i carry on with this the lord bus blessed and guided me in the study of tamil so i now carry on witli the study of urdu believing i shall ex perience the same help the question may loom up in the minds of some of you as to tlfc wisdom of this move and is to whether or not the time i have sprt in south india lias been in vain i can readily assure you that the time i have been in south india has not been in vain but a time of real training and experience which will prove an invaluable asset to me in our new work this new step on our part is not without its attendant difficulties and we stand iu need of your prayer fellowship as nwr before no service in itself is small none great though earth it fiil but that is small that seeks its own and great that seeks gods will then hold my hand most gracious cod guide all my goings still and let it be my lifes one aim to know and do thy will yours in his glad service harry worllng knows what my ships will do whereupon the british took up a position between the germans and ourselves their bluff having been called the german ships went back home many of you have been taught to look upon british as our enemy it is true we fought for our exis tence as a republic yet i say to you that next to the character and the strength of our people the greatest contribution to the happiness and prosperity of the usa has been made by the unfail ing friendliness and assistance of great britain when our civil war left us ex hausted british capital poured in by endless milions to assist in build ing up the nation we know today controlling as she did a quarter of the earths surface britain was powerful enough to put a wall about her empire and shut out all other nations instead she refused to do so and under a policy of free trade made her own wealth a source ot wealth to all we have traded and still trade in every british port secure in the honor of british commercial stand ards and in the protection of the british fleet when china ceded part of a swamp called shanghai to britain and it was transformed by british genius and british capital into the great commercial and financial metropolis of the far east it was the beginniig of our own immense expansion of trade with china today with half her invest ments we do twice the trade that britain does with china in the great war the forces of militant autocracy challenged the forces of democracy and demandel that they stand aside for many reasons some noble an others ignoble we refused to play our part while the young men of france and britain held the last outposts of civilization once more the british fleet kept intact the world that was necessary to american prosperity and ameri can happiness we came in eventu ally but though we could not repay britains dead we demand that she should guarantee the repayment of our dollars loaned to the allies te dollar had become more sacred than human life continuing mr baxter states america and britain face a dread ful menace in the far east japan goes on from outrage to outrage in the belief that america will not take her stand with britain so does mussolini so to a lesser extent does hitler yet america and britain could restore peace to the far east with out firing a gun britain and frauee together could clear the mediterran ean of every italian ship in twenty- four hours aud lock the german navy in the baltic does america iu spite of roose velts warnings still believe that she can live on her own flesh aud keep the evils of the world outside- her borders the most halfwitted babbitt irv the smallest town iu illinois knows that such a policy is impossible then is america still willing to live and trade and prosper because britain makes it possible for her so to do or conversely is she willing to see ail that go rather than support britain 1 believe that the americans would like to krow those truths 1 wish president roosevelt would make some such speech as i have indicated says baxter who before he became a member of parliament re ceived 60000 a year as head of beaverbrooks london express he visited stouffville on one or two occasions to see his uncle harvey lawson now of toronto a x x v a l under auspices uuionvillc junior fanners will be held in mammoth hall malvern 9
