ball a board the china star that night mor ley in his stateroom smeared burnt cork on his face thus blackened his reflected imago was passable for a mammy songster ho donned a woolly black wig procured by his steward and put on a mask he had just completed his prepara tions when a knock took him to the door it was a steward with a radio message morley ripped open ttie en velope and scanned flung it to the floor so lon was still an enigma and he was still missing morley found the barroom gaily de corated thronged with masked and costumed dancers he stood in the doorway lis eyes searching for syl via he felt confident that he could penetrate her disguise he saw her presently approaching him she wore a martha washington gown and a white wig morleys blackened face broke into a smile mali laughing sylvia he said in a whisper tell me who this other is she had no chanco to reply for just then someone in a mandarin costume collided with them morley felt a twitch at his coat his hand dropped to his pocket something bulged in the pocket quickly he led sylvia off the floor whats wrong hugh when they had reached a secluded spot he empitied his pocket before sylvias astonished eyes a long hea vy envelope lay in one hand in the other he held a chamois pouch sylvia gasped its mr ellis papers and his pearls that man in chinese costume he said thrust tho minto my pocket as ho collided doering said may 1 have the next dance sylvias eyes sought morleys he nodded im off to see the pur ser he left the ballroom and went dlr ectly to bensons office but benson was not there he decided to go to his own room then he disliked walk ing about unarmed with two hundred thousand dollars worth of pearls in his pocket he wonld get his gun he entered his room and locked the door then took off his wig and mask and began removing the burnt cork when he had rid himself of his dis guise he slipped his automatic into his pocket and left the room and ho went again to the pursers office but benson was still absent he went out on deck with the hopo of possibly finding phil lon lurking somewhere there was however no sign of him morley wandered up onto the deserted boat deck to continue his then thats none of your business there was something funny about that answer why didnt the man ad mit that he had though van doering had some clue to his identity it was screwy that answer thats none of your business then as morley stood there with the unseen gun of a desperate man leveled at him he had a flash of in tuition he knew then why and how- van doering had been shot he suppressed the excitement that threatened to crop out in his voice okay he said til do as you say he drew the pouch from his poc ket threw it and his gun onto the deck waited for a moment then he walked hurriedly valuable to phy sicians in treatment of heart ailments london research workers of a laboratory in kings college hospital medical school have perfected an am azing apparatus which it is declared not only enables human heartbeats to be heard but records them for repro duction as oftea as may be necessary this machine which has been cal led the phonostethograph promises to be ot great value to physicians in the treatment of heart diseases of various types the problem it riecrdlsg heart sounds for the purpose of records and study has been one which has occu pied the attention of physiologists and clinicians for many years in fact the first attempts wero made as long ago as 1s5g none ot these earlier at tempts produced results of a satisfac tory nature but the evolution and the rapid improvement of thermionic valves and electrical amplifying sys tems enabled attempts to be made by means of the modern microphone to pick up the heart sounds through tho chest wall and reproduce them by means of loudspeakers some ot the microphones used however amplified the frictional noises caused by the rubbing of the microphone against the skin and the contraction ot the inter costal muscles to such an extent that the resiiltir not clear new syove gav euconss the instrument now produced is the result of experiments with a new elec trical technique and records phono- graphically tho heart sounds the ex periments have proved very success ful and the apparatus is now stan dardised and the form of phonograph ic disc employed enables the records to bo replayed hundreds of times what actually occurs when the ma chine is in use is that the patient re clines upon a couch and over the spot where the heart beat or lung sounds are best heard is applied a chest piece which is held in position by means of an elastic belt this chest piece is the equivalent of the steth oscope familiar to those who are old enough fo remember it as the queer little wooden appliance carried by the family doctor of former days in his top hat the modern stethoscope is quite different ant the modern doctor listens in through two earpieces as most of us have seen in the case of the phonosthetho- graph the doctor listens in with the earphones adjusting the amplifier controls until he gets the maximum volume of sound which he wishes to observe and then brings the loudspea ker into operation and obtains an ab solutely faithful reproduction of the heart sounds without one atom of the usual scratch associated with re- sords not only he but any one near can here no limit to sound volume in fact there is no reason why the amplification should not be increased to such an extent that the beat of the human heart can be clearly heard in the albert hall london eng if the doctor wishes to have a per manent record of the heart he is lis tening to he sets the recording unit in operation and in a few minutes he has a record which is unbreakable and permanent the enormous value of this new instrument can hardly be completely appreciated for the present but by its records of heart sounds it will enable the case of a patient to be far more definitely folowcd than by the old me thod of making notes further stud ents will be enabled to listen as often as necessary to a sound heart and to a heart which is not normal and thus become familiar with those sounds that they would otherwise only be able to hear by frequent experiment with their stethoscopes further when records are made the lecturer can in terpolate his own comments and so the records become anextremely valuable teaching unit it is understood that ex periments have already been started to transmit heartneat by wireless and the possibilities of this are limitless a patient on an atlantic liner for instance who wishes to consult his own doctor might quite easily have him rung up by wireless telephone and asked to listen to tho heart beats of tho patient hundreds ot miles away highspeed second although i havo never bought a washer for a bath room tap in my life says an anonym ous male in the london daily ex press but when my wife says that she has forgotten to get the onions for tho stew and would 1 mind etc its an altogether different matter on these occasions i not only hesi tate protest loudly at the injustice of such a request perhaps you sir think nothing ot walking into a shop and asking for a pennyworth of parsley but have you ever tried to compete for the attentions of a harassed as sistant in a crowded provision store have you ever attempted to buy a packet of mixed herbs from a com pletely disinterested party when sur rounded by a mob of gesticulating women for although the bilk of these wom en may be loyal wives and kind- hearted mothers as soon as they step inside a shop they lose whatever gcod qualities they possess the type i have come to dread most is tho woman who has a contemptuous disregard for the needs of her fellow- beings there may be half a dozen cus tomers waiting to be served when she comes into a shop but by brute force she manages to get in front of tho counter and without a blush states her requirements in a voice which can be heard three doors up the street tho trouble is this sort of woman and it is no isolated type invariably gets away with it she is not necess arily a big woman as often as not she is small and fragilelooking with a face like a martyr but because she has a way with her and knows it she is never kept waiting as other people are if her voice is not sufficiently strong to at- tract the attention of the assistant she beats on the counter with her umbrella or raps out a tattoo with a tin of oxtail soup then there is the woman who al ways seems to be just it front of me who promptly forgets what she ha3 cpmo to bay as soon as her turn comes she turns out her bag on tho coun ter in a vain search for her shopping list she says oh dear what could i have done with it eventually after an exhaustive ex ploration she discovers that she has been clutching the list in her hand all the time what a wasto but what about the woman who re gards everything with acute suspic ion she probably wastes more time than all the rest put together are you sure those eggs- are fresh as if theyd say they werent is this cheese quite all right do you think she handles the stock as though it were all highly contaminated she questions the price of everything add ing that it is monstrously dear finally she goes out of the shop without buying anything tlie gossipy woman takes a lot ot beating i find that this type is al ways just in front of me too shell stand there opposite the counter prat tling on about the trouble she had with that last joint and how emily said etc oblivious of the fact that a queue of people is forming up be hind her why dont i barge in and say halt a pound of lard or two lamb chops or whatever it is i have been sent out to get because at precisely the moment that such a thought enters my head the woman standing directly behind me suddenly elbows her way to the front and blurts out do you mind im in rather a hurry a pound-ai-i- ahalf of stewing beef please it happens all the time women shoppers make a point of utterly ig noring the presence of a man what- on earth can hebewantinginhero seems to sum up their attitude well i suppose shopping for tho household
