strictly enforced chief witness for the crown was constable ferguson of the provin cial force who conducted the in vestigation at the scene of the tragedy on the night it happened from my investigation i found that the body was thrown 81 feet he said enquiry from a juryman as to whether the hotly was thrown or carried most of that distance brought the expression from the officer that he did not think it was carried far there was a skid mark of ssi feet from the point where the brakes were first applied to where the car came to rest 49 feet of which the car had skidded sideways leaving a skidmark 14 inches wide held on brakes i would say that the driver ap plied the brakes and held them un til the car came to rest the officer testified the car had evidently turned around and skiddod back wards for a considerable distance at no time did the automobile leave the road the officer declared that he ques tioned the driver kenneth patter son 23 of stouffville when he ar rived at the scene tho smashed and crumpled bicycle was exhibited to the jury were also shown how fast in your opinion whs this car travelling asked crown counsel harold sanders i would say 65 miles per hour replied officer ferguson the officer pointed out that according to official estimates a car travelling at 70 miles per hour would skid 2u3 feet under perfect conditions when the brakes were constantly first apply his brakes asked coroner dr l v dales the skid marks showed a distance of 38 feet john sanders also of stouffville who was riding in the front seat of the car with patterson told the jury the side of the road but he died soon after how fast were you travelling at that time asked the coroner 1 wasnt looking at the speedometer but i would imagine 50 miles per hour witness told the jury
