saturday nigh ken patterson employee at widdi- helds garage- here struck norman petty of cherrywood riding a bicycle along the sth concession of markham right at alvin s wide- mans gate the lad meeting almost instant death his mutilated body was carried some 75 feet to me ditch jack sanders riding in the seat with patterson rushed to the assisance of the illfated lad but the boy died in jacks arms the body was removed to clendenings undertaking parlors in markham and an inquest will he held on thursday evening dr dales of newmarket coroner has ordered the youthful victim only is years old had been in stouffville during the evening along with his cousin arthur petty the lads being accustomed to ride their bicycles here weekly returning on the fate ful night about 1130 they were rid ing abreast at either side of the road when pattersons car came along norman on the wrong side of the road attempted to take up a position behind arthur according to information of the police it was when crossing to do this that the terrific impact occurred pattersons car skidded nearly 300 feet and was brought to a stop on the road the impact drove the radiator of the car back and partially tore the roof the driver of the car told police he did not see the youth until it was too late to avert an accident arthur petty is reported to have stated that he believed norman had miscalculated the speed of the on coming ear other occupants of the car were mr and mrs ed smith of kirkland lake the party had been attending the wedding of mr george smith in toronto brother of ed night the lad was an entrance pupil of miss erma holden teacher of victoria square school evidence showed that williamson had been riding his bicycle north on the yonge street highway when ho was struck by the trailer of a car driven by matthews witnesses testi fied that the driver of the car was unable to avoid hitting the youth provincial traffic officer howard jackman of richmond hill told the jury that the youth was riding on the shoulder of the road behind his two brothers who were also riding bicycles the lad had turned off the pavement to catch up with his brothers when his bicycle skidd ed in the loose gravel throw ing him about 12 feet out on the road the officer declared the officer pointed out that the youth landed under the wheels of the trailer ho died before he arrived at sang i often wonder c j brodie re viewed some of the teachings of mr pike and the early days of the bethesda school and presented to mr pike for himself and imrs piko a travelling case of leather in which was inscribed presented to mr and mrs i pike july 17th 1937 on behalf of those present a gift of money was made with the case as well as the register of names of those present at the reunion owing to illnss in the family mrs pike was unable to remain for the pro gram and presentation in reply mr pike spoke of the place bethesda had always held in lis affections and said he would never want to leave it for any other place he told of the outlook which was somewhat discouraging when he first came to bethesda school but hereand there he saw bright shining eyes that bespoke intelligence and gave him heart and of seeing the possibilities he sensed in the pupils later became a realization rev mr shantz of gormley spoke of the joy it gave him to be associated with mr pike as ji brother minister in the mennonite church and complimented mr pike on his influence on the lives and habits of his pupils in the day- school and in the sunday school rev john mcewen of melville peaches and bethesda churches told of the warm friendship he felt for mr pike and said he had coma from a community where there was a man of similar experience to mr pikes having taught for 60 year in the public school as well as be ing an ardent sunday school workef rita chapman gave an appropri ate reading mr pikes eldest son abram of toronto spoke from the standpoint of the teachers son it had its joys and its embarrass ments he being the recipient of the stick both at school and at home he told of what he thought was the secret of successful living tnd which at the same time seemed to him to be the
