running down the main street with three howling dogs in pursuit it had escaped from itlie holland marsh the dogs saw the deer in an open space near the marsh and tried to run it down but the deer was too fast declared game warden george wilson with in the recollection of plenty of brad ford residents time was when a fourfooted deer in the neighbor hood would not turn nearly so many heads as the attractive 2footer stouffville junior hockey team has been ordered to meet the scarboro streaks on the local ice here this thursday evening to settle a disputed fixture of january 15 at that time the ice was soft and the visitors failed to put in an appearance although the stouffville nino took the ice and claimed the game their claim was disallowed by the oha thus the meeting this thursday evening the outcome of this clash means a great deal to the scarboro lads who must win to retain their right to meet aurora in the playoffs having more or less resented the decision of the oha the local lads intend to defeat the visitors as they did when the two teams came together on january 25 this is likely the final oha game of the season to be played hero with your own boys in the limelight and a good turnount is hoped for gents 25c ladies and children free as will he noticed elsewhere in ithis issue col w p mulock mp is endeavouring to have the village of stouffville and township of markham returned to tho riding of north york and local people have deluged him with telegrams en couraging him to take such action from time to time markham and stouffville have been footballed around by the two old parties plac ing us first in one riding and then in another but we feelthat the consensus of opinion today would bo overwhelming throughout these municipalities to become a part of the electoral district of north york again rather than to remain in east york which is such a onesided rid ing in north york the element of success is open to both parties and the riding is decidedly more rural rack exactly 50 years ago stouff ville pickering and whitchurch townships and newmarket and ux bridge towns were all in a riding called west ontario for the elec tion of gratifying number but it is in sharp contrast to the classes con ducted at stouffville last winter when the enrolment reached one hundred perhaps it is just as well that the weather for the early part of febru ary proved a little more like winter than that which wo had enjoyed throughout january some folks were being lured into a false secur ity and more progressive fruit men were reported to he even consider ing replacing their old apple orchards with banana and orange ttrees our attention has been called to an error in a statement appearing in the tribune last week the report said that baxters house in the east end of the village was once the old freel hall it is pointed out that the old freel hall is now john monk houses tailor shop whereas the baxter house stood close by the hall and served as a bake shop conduct ed by moses hill and a man named brandon this was more than 50 years ago mr f j cassidy who succeeded his brother as massey harris agent in stouffville alhout two years ago has been appointed to a road posi tion as travelling salesman for the big implement concern a new agent will be named for stouffville this week and in this connection the name of d l stouffer of ringwood is mentioned mr and mrs stouffer will shortly retire from the farm preparatory to the change the local agency is offering some specially re duced prices to clear out the stock of used implements as announced on tho hack page of this issue enclosed find 2 for my tribune renewal which seems a small amount to pay considering the pleasure i get out of it writes one of our subscribers living in wood stock further the subscriber whom we greatly appreciate writes i am in a position to see a good num ber of weekly papers and i really think that the tribune is the best ah carry a fairly good account of local happenings but there is more to a paper than that often there are splendid things in the inside pages which should not be missed each week needless to say the publish er of the tribune appreciates this kind of letter coming to our desk now and then newspaper editors receive some puzzling things through the mail so often of an anonymous nature and little attention is taken but thisj week we are in receipt of a letter from an unknown writer who for wards tho cash to pay for the in sertion wo presume the paragraphs is intended for a joke hence if its author will call around and prove his identity the tribuno will bo glad to refund him or her their money for contributing the following what wo would like to know is what was it a certain man saw sun day night so interesting that would cause him in tho wee hours of the morning to forget where the door was and to enter by tho upstair window it must have been he was looking high for the key hole or else ho was just a plain romeo tell the rest of us married men how you get away with it mr 1 the womens day of prayer friday afternoon february 12th at 3 pm in the baptist church stouffville all reaper has superseded the stork in the matter of vital statis tics for stouffville but in 1936 the stork was several jumps ahead of the hearse the number of births registered in the village during the year totalled 39 and deaths 28 there were 1g marriages perform ed which showed an increase over any period in the last five years of course it was leap year but we are not implying that this made up for the difference it is rather a co incidence though that the greatest marrying year in the last five should be leap year in defending salary increases to numerous county officials last week dr dalos of newmarket made tho remarkable statement that some of these officials have not had an increase in fifteen years how many other workmen have had in creases in the past fifteen years most people have teen satisfied to hold their own throughout this de pression which is now lifting and such defence put up in behalf of more money for officials who were paid very well is amusing to many the superintendent of the house of refuge and his wife who were each increased one hundred dollars has not been in office for more than three or four years and if the posi tions were thrown open today increased one hundred dollars have jobs at less than had heretofore been paid tito wms of the stouffville united church met on thursday fdb 4 th with mrs thomas presi dent in charge the devotional period was taken by mrs herbert lee a splendid synopsis of the 4th chapter of our study book was given by mrs harris several of the members had ithe privilege of atten ding the toronto east definite tie tails to announce the press is in formed by the interested parties prospects are however that short ly stouffville is to have a ten-to-a- dollar store and in tact the only obstacle in tho way of such a store being established hero before is the lack of store accommodation it now appears that with some contem plated changes in the near future there will be an opening the recep tion such a store would receive at the hands of other merchants here is varied some of our merchants say it will add that necessary pep to main street which they say is lacking while another merchant said that while he was in a line that would receive added opposition an uptodate fivetoadollar store would not injure his business but would bring more peoplo to stouff ville and tho place would be more widely patronized as a live business centre that it is today reovo wcldon said he would wel come any improvement that such a store might bring to main street and thus tho matter stands until more definite
