the second ber eavement in the family within a few- weeks as on nov 10 mrs shackel lost a brother chas e dyson a member of the city council in windsor in 10323 the aged mother who had been in active this time the congregation of stoultville congregationalchristian church has installed a piano which seems better adapted for evangelistic meetings than the organ the church is also equipped with a good organ which has been doing service for around 25 years the first musical instru ment in the old congregational church was a fine pipe organ which served for many years and if we are correct the organist was none other than the present mrs a s collins the present organist is miss nora stapleton who will no doubt appreciate the new instrument particularly for use at the evening services mrs collins was nonetheless required to blow out the lighted candles william morgason of goodwood although sg last october never seem3 to grow old except for his hearing he is in perfect physical condition when he called at the tribune last week to renew his paper he informed us that he had been a subscriber nigh on to 50 years or since tho paper was first started he produced a newspaper clipping taken from this paper in 1925 and which concerns the first council of ux- bridgo township it reads the first council meeting in ux- bridgo township was held iu the township hall at goodwood on the 20th day of december 1s75 the hall being built in that year previous to that tho meetings were held in the various hotels in the township and village of uxbridge the members of tho first council were as follows reeve j b feasby depdteeve benjamin parker councillors jos e gould edward major and henry james with e hllborn clerk other drying officials were ira chapman assessor ransome forsyth collector simon allcock inspector of hotel licenses and treasurer james percy and geo b miller auditors mr morgason says he recalls tho first councillors and reeve every one with but one exception he oven remembered that at the first meet ing there were 36 people present and that was quite a crowd to gather in thoso days if rev w e smalley should de cide to preach a sermon to his congregations at baker hill or markham second baptist churches about the saints that stand in slippery places it might be con strued as a sequel to his christmas day experiences the reverened gentleman and his family have reason to remember christmas day 193g for a long time after reach ing the city of owen sound success fully by automobile a no mean feat in midwinter he was denied en trance to the little village of tara only 15 miles away because of glar ing ice on hills and along dales and after a heroic fight was forced to re turn to stouffville compelled to ad mit defeat we would not have our readers assume that mr smalley is anything hut a purposeful man and his en deavour to succeed on this occasion created enough trouble to fill a book the family car with his wife and two sons with hint was ditched on two occasions after many hair- raising escapes and to climax and end the day the car key was allow ed to fall down a register in a home where they had made an un expected call enroute home and this necessitated no end of trouble in pulling down pipes and rescuing the key we left stouffville early friday morning said mr smalley in- lending to spend christmas with mrs smalleys mother at tara roads were fairly good until we passed meaford when we encounter ed ruts and ice leaving owen sound we were forced to change our course to tara after slidding backward down a hill when i lost control of the car willing hands helped us out ot tho ditch where we came to a stop and we made an eftort liy another route progress was good until a hill was again en countered whore numerous cars were piled up some turning back we decided to turn back but in getting turned around our car land ed into a rut which necessitated a truck to pull us out concluded mr smalley it was later when visiting a rela tive in owen sound that the key was lost down the register as they were their coats over it as a finishing touch at the end ot tho day when energy was burning low out went the lights near meaford and another stop was made for repairs said mr smalley the old proverb that things are never so bad hut that they might be worse holds good even for this christmas day episode for mr smalley observed they wcro thankful that no one was hurt and their car was not damaged in the least miss ross supervisor miss mcdonald miss tindall c e watson christmas day was a happy occasion for mr and mrs george bowers for it marked a rather large family gathering their three daughters were home with their husbands including mr and mrs george judd of toronto mr and mrs d h howe and daughter joan from detroit michigan and mr and mrs george hewitt from peter borough also a granddaughter miss hazel of orillia both mr and mrs bowers were in splendid health for the excitement of another christ mas with its happy events and age did not dim their interest mr bowers will be 82 years old on january 7 next while mrs bowers is as many of our readers know a twin sister of mrs henry hodgins they being s7 next september and believed the eldest girl twills in the province of ontario josiah sterkle of zurich was a visitor in the tribune office satur day morning calling to renew his paper which doesnt expire until next spring but ho believes in keep ing paid well iu advance mr steckle with his wife and two young sons spent the holiday with her parents mr and mrs jake
