albert ans all happy according to mr clarence stouffer of fleet alberta in sending his annual renewal to the tribune he says that crops around fleet were almost a total failure wheat jjveraged only 2 bushels to the acre and oats practi cally useless unless as a little feed the summer was very hot and dry but the fall rains revived the gar dens and saved the potatoes and other roots mr stouffer had 40 bushels from his patch however he adds we albertans are all happy for we are expecting our basic dividend in november hence with what we have and what wo expect to- get we are all smiles we look 2gth 1936 dear friends in china at last and oh for the pen of the ready scribe to picture for you all that i have seen these last few days first may i thank all the kind friends who remembered the journey across the pacific in their prayers for it was a perfectly wonderful trip and instead of dread ing it we were able to enjoy every moment at first i thought i was to be alone on the way across but found on board also two other missionaries of the same mission china inland mission and so with pleasant company and good weather what more could he desired we left vancouver after a very pleasant trip through the states on saturday july 25th arriving in honolulu on thursday morning honolulu is all that it is portrayed to be both in climate and beauty i only wondered if one would not get tired of its constant beauty and warm weather the boat left there next morning giving us just one day to see what we would have liked to have taken a week or more to see yokohoma in japan was our next stop reached on august sth satur day japan with its small people all beautifully dressed especially the women to see them you would think it was some special occasion instead of just their ordinary every day wear we were able to take the electric train from yokohama up to tokyo the capital about an half hours ride japan is remarkably clean compared with china and per haps my tendency was to compare it more with china than canada and therefore my impressions of it would be different from mr crooks for example who will be coming out for the first time from yokohama wo went on to kobe also in japan hero we went to a temple built on the top almost of a mountain we had to go up by cablo car electric almost straight up going up wasnt as bad as cpm- ing down specially standing at the front seeing the track right below you almost it was sad to see all the people going up and down visiting the temple leaving little gifts of money etc having prayers written for them and sticking the paper on a stick in the side of a hill or chew ing it into pulp and throwing it at the idol which was a horriblo looking image covered with these papers i do not know anything about their worship but one could see by their faces that they wero governed by fear fear of evil spirits then china shanghai on tues day august 11th and father was down to meet me mother stayed up here to welcome us so you can imagine we didnt spend any longer in shanghai than was necessary about tho meeting i will let you imagine after an interval of six years i happened to come over on the same boat as i showed in the lecture on good friday the empress of japan the largest and fastest on the pacific but of course i was ithird class and that wasnt anything very grand all the accommodation is given to the first class and what a palace it is well from that boat we got on a japanese boat a little larger than tho boats crossing from cobourg to rochester and travelled up the yankste river first class chinese we had to eat chinese food but that wasnt too bad for me as i have done it before and rather enjoyed most meals breakfast is the worst meal least choice and how i missed the old porridge and eggs wish i could really describe all i saw up river some places the foreign boats are not permitted to stop for passengers in fact they can only call in at treaty ports so a boat junk conies out and hooks on while we went very slow and people scramble aboard or get off as tho case may be both at the same time and boxes and all all the scream ing and shouting and confusion but they got there somehow at one place where we were docked the beggars came out in round wooden tubs why they didnt upset i dont know and they had long poles with small nets at tho end which reached up to the deck wanting you to place your money in them we came about 500 miles up the river taking about three days we left the boat at a place called kiukiang one of the iplaces- we passed on the way was nanking the capital of china not a very impos ing looking place from the river but quito a coming city we had to take rickshas from kiukiang as the last bus had gone and how slow they are hut they give one a good opportunity to look around and take in the scenes and smells it was six miiles to the foot hills and then wo began the walk up the mountain this is an altitude of 3500 feet and its almost straight up there is one place called the 1000 steps where you climb up roughly a thousand steps straight up and there are many other flights similar if one does not wish to walk there is one other way and that is to ride up by a chair carried by four men that is quite an experience and so here we aro at this beautiful place and out of the heat though i had it hotter in the states than i have had it hero in china now i must close do trust this finds you all well and may the lords richest blessing be with you yours in his service william w tyler cio china inland mission 1531 sinza iroad shanghai china i a pretty
