the village over 21 years of age it was argued by the council that this class of citizen enjoys all the benefits of the com munity but does not contribute in a manner done by the married brothers the tax was set by bylaw at 3 per head but the estimated j amount of revenue was not given here in stouffville no effort is made to collect poll tax although it is a legal obligation and would seem to he justifiable however we have so few men who would come within its scope that it has not been deemed worth the effort of collection un married men who pay other taxes or are householders are not fielder and rirst base of toronto maple leafs were in town last week stopping at earls old home in lemonville the hoys have since gone north for a holiday the ball business having come to an end for this season despite the fact that there were three auction sales last saturday within a radius of 10 or 12 miles of stouffville one of the largest crowds ever assembled at a furniture sale in this town gathered at the robert miller home in the west end when the large list of household effects were disposed of by mr barstow miller of hamilton who is winding up his fathers estate hundreds of individual sales were recorded running from a grandfather clock knocked down at 50 to a clare- mont buyer to sales as low as 5 cents a gramophone prized for its beautiful case sold for 16 a desk for 20 and a set of dishes for 30 scores of individual dishes were dis posed of and realized ready high prices perhaps the best bargain of the sale at least one which mr miller considered a real prize for someone was the sale of a walnut dresser for 7 which the owner be lieved had cost his parents around 90 opportunities like this which draw crowds to the auctions and what strange things take place here was a dresser costing so much money selling for only 7 while another dresser worth around 12 new brought slightly more than the wal nut piece anyway it was a greal sale with buyers from as far away as toronto the house was offered but railed to get a buyer and the property is still on the market but will be sold at an attractive price as mr miller does not intend to let it stand a s farmer
