and mrs wm griffith and her com mittee had charge of the refresh ment arrangements because of the mounting toll of street and highway autimobile ac cidents safety education in the schools and colleges of the country is becoming an important part ot the curriculum in some places at the present time in stouffville there is need for advice to children who don roller skates and skate on the paved street iroller skating is a popular sport among the younger element and it is a healthful one but it is dangerous for youngsters to skate on roadways wliere there is motor traffic unless the skater and driver are both on the alert child ren are prone to zigzag and there fore leave the motorist in doubt as to which way they are going to turn if he guesses wrong there is likely to be serious accident and perhaps loss of life a definite program of safetyteaching in the schools is be coming an absolute necessity and it is hoped that teachers will endeavor to warn their pupils of tho dangers that beset the careless william hill ot bloomiugtou probably the oldest person in this locality reached his 97th birthday on april 15 in good health and strength mr hill has been a widow er for years but one sou and one daughter live on the homestead with him there is a family of nine sons and daughters living mr hill has spent all his long life in the bloom ingtou settlement and looks good to happily celebrate the century mark in another tmeo years an editor in a neighboring town got into a mess for printing the words apple sauce in the midst of a report on a sermon by a minister friend in his own community i re sent the words and i cant under stand why you made the derisive re mark said the editors pastor look ing up the report which the editor hadnt yet read in print the news man said great scot man i wrote applause the linotype operator had blundered there are several valuable and desirable residences for sale in the village this spring located in all sections houses for rent arc practi cally all taken and one family who desired to locate here last week was disappointed in not getting a place the scarcity of good properties for rent should stimulate the sale of properties in the natural course of events however there are few pro perties residential changing hands thus far this spring three nurses and a school teacher recently arrived in toronto from the far outpost of aklavik nwt on furlough until august readers will recall that aklavik is near where earl cleudemiing of the royal mounties is stationed at providence miss helen hutcheson a personal friend of miss marjorie stewart rn daughter of mrs stewart on mill street is one ot the nurses at aklavik hospital which was recently burned this hospital by the way is the farthest north of any within tho british empire and was built by the missionary- society of the church of england in canada at 4 am on april 6 and when the thermome ter was 36 degrees below zero the hospital and nurses residence were destroyed by fire the nurses manag ed to escape with only the clothing on their backs while a couple of the boys saved the most valuable equip ment besides a complete operation room the hospital had an xray machine miss hutcheson and dr fred urquhart who has jurisdiction over the hospital remain in the north when it is hoped that ere summer time supplies will be forwarded for rebuilding the church at the pre sent time is building a school at this northern post at a recent meeting of the muni cipal council representatives of the horticultural society requested the council to enforce the ibylaw for bidding dogs to run at large but whether the council has done any thing about the request we are un able to state on the face of things it would look as though the matter had been forgotten for any time of the day a goodly number of dogs may be seen roaming the streets right now people are getting their lawns and flower beds dnto shape and strongly protest having them disturbed by roaming canines al ways somebodys pet of course it should bo understood that it is not the specific duty of reeve sanders and his aides to go out with a lasoo and revolver and clean up the situa tion effective even though that may prove the idea we suppose in pro testing to the council about the flagrant manner in which thq by law is regarded is that they may advise their police officer that he should see that this bylaw is re spected by the owners of dogs al though the bylaw provides for dogs being on leash or tied up all the year through a sort of unwritten law has been recognized which is to forget the law during the winter season and the horticulturists thing it is time the winking should stop for the summer at least d o aoeiot ioe30e bring this coupon to the stanley theatre monday
