was evident by the puzzlers placed before whit church township council at their april meeting held on saturday at vandorf one ratepayer in tough circumstances appeared before the members with the request that he be financed to the extent of 50 to en able him to try his fortune in new ontario this gentleman turned down an offer of work on the ground that the pay was inadequate the offer was at least 20 per month tree house milk and firewood when the council declined to send him on the northern jollification he left the chambers looking anything but like a sunshiny day another ratepayer wanted council to stake him for a team of horses by way of a 100 loan the word loan was emphasized warden j o little advised the council that hospitalization in york county for the month of january had reached a peak in that month for all time when 20 354 was ex- ponded he asked that the utmost vigilance be exercised in consenting to patients going to hospital and that every effort be put forth to gel the patient to assume the cost or ai least a share of it a rearrangement of road foremen i was made on beats 39 and 40 murry smith will replace both fore men on these two seats with the exception of the herb mitchell side- road which mr mitchell will be ask ed to look after councillors evans and leary pass ed a resolution calling for the government road subsidy on 1396942 expended on adjournment durinv the summer season the resolution met with the approval of all the council and passed instructions were given that all road foremen be notified that hence forth all road accounts must be in the hands of the road superintend ent on or before the 5th day of the month in order to be dealt with at the regular meeting for that month those not so filed will be held over until the meeting in the next month the presentation of road accounts on the day council meets has caused no end of delay and is not to be tolerated longer councillors evans and cook mov ed for the payment of mrs garnet vanzant a daughter dr and mrs ira freel and their staff of two assistants arrived home from their four mouths holiday in florida ou saturday well tauued tired and glad to be back in the old town again the doctor has lost con siderable weight but otherwise he appears to he his same old self while mrs freel is much improved over her condition at the time they left for st petersburg the trip of many hundreds of miles was delay ed both enroute and before il start ed owing to the havoc of the floods in the states which our readers are more or less familiar with from newspaper reports we have requested dr freel to outline some of the interesting features of his holiday and here are his observations coming up out of the deep south high winds and black clouds racing towards us made one- think of the recent tornadoes in the same vicinity only 24 hours previous while we escaped the tornado yet the high waters in south carolina made us play pussy wants a corner over the good roads until we find a sound bridge to pass over we made strong efforts to get away from the susquehanna de vastation but the jinx willed other- wise as ignition trouble compelled us to spend a night in that sodden griefstricken community every where broken retaining walls flood ed roads and harrowing tales con fronted us we were told of dead bodes being found in cellars whose foundations had been ripped apart by huge cakes of ice by houses floating down the river with the smoke still pouring out of the chimneys the roaring river going three blocks back ruining furniture battering houses down tearing up roads general desolation in times of trouble and distress heroism comes to the front young boys in bathing suits and boats rescuing stranded people from roofs or upper stories only to be engulf ed in the raging waters and they themselves having to be rescued by boats from harrisburg poor holiday weather the sunny south was a misnomer as far as this winter was concerned as months of rain cold winds and lack of sunshine was the pre dominant feature some wise cracks signs noted on the way up read dont drink when you drive dont drive when you drink you have your money and i have mine we each have ours that will be fine but if you kep yours and keep mine too what in the h will i do anything you want name it we have it if we havent it then you dont want it anyway so what the festival favored with bright skies and a sunny day st petersburg annual festival of states passed in a color ful review on april 3rd to the cheering of thousands of homo folks and visitors this festival of states corresponds to the mardi gras oi new orleans and the festival of roses of los angeles new jersey float a symphony in silver gold and dark purple carried off the prize with canada in honorable mention a number of gaps occurred in the parade of floats owing to a down pour of rain the night previous which spoiled their finery the par ade was a spectacle of stirring beauty gay with the brightest of colors resplendent with marching units brightly uniformed bands and j many comical interludes by clowns on these floats were young women in the newest of frocks pul chritudinous bathing beauties whose brief suits breathe the spirit of out door florida not a cloud was visible in the sky and the clear florida sunshine smiled down on the crowds tempering the breeze the canadian float was of regal build with a dignified touch to make it among the outstanding in the procession it was entirely white finished around the bottom with green and white fringe in the centre was a wreath with a crown on top and maple leaf in the centre on an elaborate throne in the back sat the lovely canadian queen beverley ruth shaver the float was over hung with rich purple and over the top hung a deep gold fringe our flag was at either side of the float and the back ground for miss shaver in her white dress was a rich drape of red velvet our canadian queen won the con test for the international beauties and was given a free trip to cuba the parade was more than two hours in passing and represented states cities business houses boy scouts dairies and so forth prizes were given for different sections and for the best bands florida military academy band won first several of the oands had women players they wore the same uniform as the men but instead o f trousers had a wide stripe down each side of their skirt the feminine drapery is always more artistic than male attire republicans accuse the govt of plowing under prosperity as well as cotton the tornado last october played havoc with the grapefruit which was just heavy enough to be blown off the coast guard flyers are a special boon to sponge fishermen who frequently had to go out a hundred miles in quest for their material in the event of a sudden storm the flyers slip out and drop their warnings for the sponge fleet to skip home a bawling contest one of the games at the band shell is a wife calling contest the husband who could call the loudest and clearest won the prize loud calls were heard such as susan sew on a button mary why is breakfast not ready lucy youre the best cook in the country the man calling the last sentence won the prize two women and one man were the judges barometer of better times higher prices and itrisker ridding at farm sales in this section in dicate that family of toronto were out sunday with mr and mrs h slack the higher prices and brisker bidding that prevailed at auction sales in this section for the sale season which practically came to a close april 1 may be said to be a fairly accurate barometer of the gradual return of better times to the farm the clearing auction sale of farm stock and implements is an institu tion of real importance in the rural life of ontario auction sales are not as numerous as they once were and in some respects they have been materially changed fundamental ly they remain the same their primary purpose is to enable a far mer who for some reason or other is giving up the vocation of agricul ture to dispose of his livestock and machinery he might with consid erable difficulty find buyers for his stock and possibly for some of his implements hut in no other way can he convert forks shovels hoes and other articles too numerous to mention into cash except by the public auction it is interesting to note that the clearing auction sale is now almost entirely a cash sale terms offering ten months credit on approved joint notes with a cer tain discount off for cash no longer appear at the bottom of the average sale bill even provision for credit with interest added is frequently omitted the farm auction has be come largely a cash business at which the bidder buys only what he can pay for not what he thinks be will be able to pay for ten months hence but the auction sale is more than a mere method of disposing of farm stock and implements in tht neighborhood in which it is held it is something of a community fair it is or interest to and attracts scores of people who do not require anything on the lengthy sale list they go to see how things are sell ing and to hear discussed the many topics relative to farming and neighborhood happenings and gossip which form the general run of con versation at such events the auction sale furnishes a gettogether incentive and as such is of real importance with he return of better times it will again become more frequent it is a significant fact that when things were at their best in ontario agriculture auction sales during the winter months were an almost daily occurence when they are plentiful there is a real in dication of prosperity and confidence in agriculture when they are scarce as they have been for the past few years the opposite is the case the fall of 1935 and winter of 1936 was the best sale season run locally since war davs mr herbert lageer of toronto is spending a few days with his parents on church street spirit of comradeship characterized the meeting for this season of tlio business and young mens bible class on sunday afternoon it was easter and goodbye in one and yet these two so blended in the teachers address and the class consciousness that the future of the class seemed both hopeful and assured for six years now this undenominational bible class has carried on binding the young men together in good fellowship and good works and keeping before its members the ideals principles and compassionate love of the master an interesting and very touching part of the program for easter day was the reading of a complimentary address by honorary president wilfred morden and the presenta tion of a lovely club bag to mr laidlaw and a box of chocolates to mrs laidlaw by president walter brillinger on behalf of the class mr laidlaw replied in a few words full of pathos humor and gratitude the rural postman in the cold and blustery weather when the frost is on the rail would you like to face a blizzard with a half a ton of mail in the biting blizzard weather when the snow comes to your knees would you lovo to fish for pennies while your feet and fingers freeze when the gleaming snow is drifted underneath a foot of sleet would you love to have the chil blains in your elbows and your feet when outdoors the wind is whist ling and the air is full of snow would you love to have a jitney and tho blamed thing would not go yes id love the good old fireside sipping coffee fronf a pail but i have to buck the snowdrifts cause the farmers want their mail i dont mind the frozen
