visitors with miss gertrude wegg cashel nurff folks claimed that tuesday night was the most severe weather test locally of the season six or eight degrees below zero with a 40 mile gale went right through many houses especially if they were not protected from the west wind any- way wo all know it was frightfully cold and wednesday morning al though bright and sunny was a bitter day outofdoors ne with startling sudden ness to levi mapes on wednesday night last week as he was walking home from ballantrae to iiis place on the 7th concession of whitchurch mapes had spent several hours in ballantrae and left the barber shop owned by w andrews shortly he- fore 11 oclock that evening to walk home a distance of less than two miles he had not gone far on the aurora road when he discovered sparks coming from the chimney of hugh binghams house the first farm west of ballantrae and known as the baddy young place mapes evidently speeded along in order to warn the occupants he reached the front of the property only over exclaiming 1 believe i have overdone it which words were j heard by two young hoys radford i and hill who were there when i mapes came up they hurriedly gavei the alarm at the house and mr j mapes was removed inside but life was extinct a doctor was summon ed from mount albert and pro nounced death due from heart condition i mapes was in his ilth year and j was born in the township of mark1 ham hut iiad spent quite a number of years iu whitchurch he lived alone occupying a liouse on some land owned by his only brother albert who survives him and who was the older of the two levi is al so survived by three sons two living in toronto and one near kingston his death occurred around 1 1 oclock at night and he had spent the day as usual so far as is known in the evening it was often his custom to walk into the village of ballantrae which lie did on this occasion spending some time in the barber shop and conversing with the lads there as usual he gave no evi and helen abell president of boys and girls groups iu the death of amos lehman on sunday afternoon at his late homo on obrien avenue a retired busi ness man prominently associated with the business and church life of this community through its early days as an incorporated village passes into the great unseen fully prepared to meet his god mr lehman had been in poor health tho last three years as a result of a stroke from which time he gradually declined the end came rather suddenly after he had been assisted by his devoted wife to dress mi lehman was stricken with a convulsion and never regained consciousness before he passed away a few hours later amos lehman was the leading boot and shoe merchant in stouff ville retiring only four years ago when lie disposed of his business to his eldest son ornisby after 36 years in the trade as owner of a store born near cedar grove mr lehman at the age of 14 years entered the employ of a shoe factory in huron county at the village of blake after 2 years apprenticeship there he went to michigan to spend a further three years learning the art of making shoes in 1s90 mr lehman launched into business in stouffville in premises now occupied by the j undertaking store main and church streets in 1901 he purchased the building standing immediately east of the fire hall where he carried on until the last year of the war 1919 when he bought the line brick store right across the road from the other premises and where the lehman shoe store has since been located the brick store was built by messrs sam and jake burkholder the upper storey being a masonic hall and a dwelling mr lehman was a son of the late benj lehman and was of dutch pioneer stock he is survived by his wife whose maiden name was fannie hoover to their marriage in 1s92 a family of five children survive being three daughters and two sons namely misses ida and ann at home mrs fred kieth of stouffville ormsby who succeeded to the fathers business and arthur circulation state our townsman has been missed ever- since he retired from business he was a member of the village council for some years and was honored with the reeveship in 1922 he was a member and church
