spectacular robbery occurred on sunday when roost raiders visited the farm of v f st john just east of town in day light and made off with about 40 hens the family decided to go visit ing and left home in the middle of the morning returning before s in the evening when they discovered the robbery tracks of a oar were clearly visible to the garage which adjoins the hen pen xo oil appears to have noticed j car on tiie st john farm during the day although lloyd turner living just across the way to the west states that his dog set up a big noise about 3 oclock and had to be called in the house to be quieted the animal may have sensed some thing wrong it is thought being the sabbath day a truck would not likely have ventured on the roads for such a mission and the tracks indicated that it was a passenger car in which the birds had been con veyed it would also appear that the robbery was carried out by someone who knew the movements of the st john family which had only suddenly decided in a hurry to make the trip from home on that par ticular day that a sneakthief would operate in this way in broad daylight is something to he wondered at can they he in the neighborhood could strangers possibly have known the family was away these are ques tions for the police to ponder over and we understand they are at work this manner of theft smashes the old proverb which says the junior squad was played in markham against east york on thursday night last the local gang threw every thing they had into the game and the score was quite descriptive of the play due to the condition of the ice and the fact that it was a pre season tilt accounted for consider able bush whacking throughout stouffville being short two of their star performers namely spencely and draper a shift in the lines was necessary a couple of less ex perienced subs were brought into play but on the whole gave good account of themselves the first period was rather ragged neither team having any advantage following a scoreless opening stanza the boys went to work with a will and murray ilolden opened the score sheet on a pass from john button shortly after the beginning of the second the locals went into the third period with a two goal lead which was added to on three occasions by ashenhurst and nerlick during the dying moments lou morden staged a short fistic struggle at centre ice but was speedily ban ished along with his east york opponent for five minutes by referee johnson with less than five minutes to play off the final stanza the york ers sent everyman into stouffville territory and succeeded in robbing vic paxton of a 50 shutout the star performer of the game was unquestionably ernie xerlic the centre player for the locals second line he packs a shot that would make connacher blush and his quick shifts and busts of speed proved the highlight of the game french import quotas a re cently published volume on french trade by arnold haight london england formerly of
