interests first to the electors of mnskokaontario a few days ago a good personal friend and former political as sociate of mine in the township of stephenson remonstrated with me for withdrawing support from the liberal party in this ridingana giving active leadership to the advanced reform movement headed by hon harry stevens his remonstrance is probably shared by others of the liberal party to whom party leadership is a sacred thing and party identity an indissoluble association i was forced to reply that if the principles of reform are the ear marks by which liberalism is to be distinguished from conservatlve- ism then i must still regard myself as an advanced liberal one of the many thousands in canada who are restless under the inert and smugly contented leadership of hon mackenzie king in this feel ing of restlessness over old party leadership thousands from the conservative raisin are joining perhaps my friend himself has failed to grasp the significant features of the present political situation in the first place is it not obvious that the period of marking time in canadan political policies has passed and the time for con crete constructive action has arrived is it not apparent to anyono of intelligent thought that future reliance upon party tradi tions and party names must ho abandoned definite forward- moving leadership with a vision of the hopelessness of further reliance upon past party records and future party hopes must supply the only prospect that canada will be able to successfully solve her economic and social problems i am not deeply concerned about the past party alliliatlons of hon harry stevens i am much more concerned and there is ab undant evidence that many in this riding share this con cern with me in the opportunity his leadership affords for applying to the solution of our national problems by the broad principle of public rather than the narrow principle of party interest i do not believe that there is the least prospect of foundational progress through the maze of present national difficulties unless we abandon our hopeless dependence upon the narrowness and in sufficiency of old party leadership determination to unite in the spirit of helpful cooperation alone offers hope of a solution of a solution of our economic and social problems this is the urgent need of the hour in the great movement headed by hon harry stevens there is some hope of raching a goal which lies beyond party attainment its broad appeal is to every canadian to cooperate in rescuing the country from the continued inefficiency selfishness and hopeless ness of the party system government by and for the people is the issue confronting this and every other riding in canada i am grateful for the number of letters received from all parts i am still more grateful for tho masses of our people are of the riding pledging assistance tzja in the great task which lies ahead i t iert and desire to emphasize that
