shadows in the sheep shed anc strain ami breeds everincreasing toll by k w duck in hural newyorker in every phase of livestock hus- landry there lurk shadows breed associations and breeders seldom re fer to them this is only natural if cue goes to purchase a new car the salesman does not first present an alarming array of statistics referring to automobile accidents and deaths we know these hazards exist but in unite of them prefer to go forward shadows in the sheep industry arc io greater nor perhaps less hazard ous than those of other livestock enterprises however thus sheep- raising business does possess one hazard perhaps the greatest of all which applies especially to the in dustry i am referring to the ever- increasing menace of the sheep- killing dog so great has the loss become from this source that sheep have practically disappeared from many of our small western farms siikep loss from dogs a sheepkilling dog is probably the most cunning cruel and vicious ani mal alive a good dog is mans greatest friend and a necessary farm asset however cur dogs and par ticularly certain are exerting an on the sheep industry if good dogs are kept on the farm sheep are more accustomed to seeing them and less cisily frightened they will also give the alarm and may fight to protect ther owners sheep from marauders if no dogs are kept however there is the advantage of being able to put out poison for trespassers where livestock cannot get at it and post a sign to this effect this together with efficient use of a highnowdered rifle is the only solution it is of course so drastic few like to resort to it we all like to get along with our neighbors and their dogs are always perfect so many find it easier or at least less troublesome to quit raising sheep the greatest loss from dogs is seldom due to dir ect killing but to the great fright sustained by the sheep i once per formed a postmortem en a ewe which had been chased by dogs there was not a mark but her heart burst open from fright even if a ewe is not torn she will usually prove barren after being chased by dogs iambs or yearlings once chas ed will seldom grow or do well after wards no indemnity can be collected for such losses not immediately ap parent so the sheep owner has to stand them himself so great has this menace become particularly on farms adjacent to inrgsr towns and cities sheeprais ing has almost disappeared during the past few years dogs owned in towns and cities have increased greatly owners are careless becom ing tired of their property the dogs are often turned loose and these dogs form marauding bands which prey on the countryside others who al low their dogs to run loose parti cularly at night would probably be astounded and would not believe they can become killers at night and re turn the same loving canine to a peaceful fireside the next morning yet such is often the ease rudy vallee at exhomemade beauty aid giving a baby a middle name isnt of great importance which makes this the quickest known way to any trouble sheep stomach worms this is an everpresent shadow of the sheep business a silent insidious killer the stomach worm is a blood sucking vampire whose numbers run into the thousands in infested sheep they could well be called dealers of the pale death because in badly in fested sheep the skin is pale and so arc the membranes of the eyes and mouth the bowels arc usually loose infested sheep stand listlessly about and are thin and rundown no matter how much they are fed when sheep begin to shed their fleece during the winter or early spring they are often infested with stomach worms starving them for 21 hours and dosing with tctra- chlorcthylenc this drug may also be purchased in capsule form as nema capsules there are other com mercial treatments my friend don bell in charge of slice investigations ohio experi mental station wooster has found treatment with coopersulphate very effective they use two ounces of coppersulphate crystals in one gal- lon of rain or distilled water for lambs under six months of age drench with about one ounce of this solution yearlings use two ounces and for aged sheep three ounces do not give any feed or water for 12 to 21 hours before treatment and for si to 12 hours after administration a longnecked bottle makes a good way to give the drench do not tip the head back very far or sheep can not swallow the treatment should i le given once a month throughout the year rotation of pasture and net pasturing too clos or too many per area must also be practiced to prevent infestation breeds and methods the beet way to obtain accurate information about breeds and mehcus is to go direct to the farms of thj folks that are continually de monstrating by their own tried and proven practices they have found the answer to many of the perplex ing production and breeding problems cf their particular industry dan thomas hollywood corres pondent attributes this gag to mae west the actress was the pret zel they just get well started in one direction when they turn toward something else i what is your standard what is your standard every thing in life depends on that consider an extract from a letter which lies on my de before me now it comes from a young man twentyfour years of age he writes my people have always been faito- ful to the church until now our dea cons have all been older men but recently another young man about thirty and myself 1 am twentyfour were elected deacons an older man in the congregation thinks we ought not to have been put on mie board now he is trying to stir up trouble 1 havo aways believed him to be a good christian although he is very narrow and does not do some things that wo would do he says we are not fit to be deacons yet 1 have never known anything but the christian life what would you say or do if you were in my place there is always something to be said in favor of older men on church boards because of the mature exper ience of age but 1 have seen church boards going to dry rot for want of some young blood as for the old fellow who thinks these young fellows ought not to be on tho board he should remember that their election was the voice of the church or of the governing body of the church and be content to abide by that every man has a standard some men adopt false standards and think themselves to be a great deal better than they are indeed there are tew men who are able to form a true estimate of themselves diunt saint paul counsel the romans not to think more highly of themselves than they ought to think in every church there are those who do that unfortunately there are of ten those who encourage them but what we need not only in church but everywhere is to have a true es timate of ourselves a true estimate of ourselves will save us from mock modesty it will also prevent us from developing an aggressive and over bearing spirit determine your standard fix your ideal clearly in your mind and make for that that will determine char acter and in the end it is charact er that counts not what a man pro fesses no girl who values her looks should miss making use of cucum bers while they are in season the freshcut surface of a cucumber by itself is cooling and beautifying to the skin here is an excellent cucumber cream you can make a home cut two cucumbers into fairly thin slices without peeling them put them into an earthenware con tainer and add four ounces of best olive oil stand the container in a large saucepan of cold water and bring very slowly to the boil then sim mer again very slowly tor two hours now strain the mixture through cheesecloth weigh it and to every three ounces of the strained cream add half an ounce of white wax one ounce of anolinc and a quarter of an ounce of spermaceti heat the mixture again so that th ingredients mix and blend re move the eontainei from the sauce pan and beat till cold adding while beating 12 drops of simple tincture of benzoin to every ounce of the cream press ino clean pomade pots and it is ready to use many girls suffer a lot from flushing and tlu more they suffer the more they blush j now flushing is often due to aeid- ity a large amount of meat should be avoided also fried food and pas try it is a gooii plan to take a small dose of milk of magnesia be fore each meal drink lots of water too green powder disguises redness of the skin very well and should be used where necessary much can be done by mental ef fort to avoid the habit of flushing try to avoid thinking of yourself when in the company of others instead of wondering what they are thinking of you try to interet your self the conversation and in the people with whom you are talking listen with interest to what they say soon you will be quite at ease still more important is to realize that embarrassing as flushing at times may be it is considered by many to be a pretty trait the skin should be treated with much the same care as the skin of your face apply almond oil or olive oil plentifully then rub on pow dered toilet oatmeal until it absorbs the surplus oil and rolls off in litle balls despite ttie attention the particu lar homemaker pays to an unusual cutworm infestation is occuring in certain parts or southern ontario reports of damage so tar havo come to band from near wel- laceburg st thomas and harrow in the wallaceburg district says geo m stirrett dominion entomological laboratory chatham ontario toe cutworms are leaving grain and clov er fields and migrating into sugar- beet fields corn fields or adjacent crops in the harrow district they have been reported on garden truck so far the most injury has occurred to sugarbeets in several fields a few of the outer rows ot beet plants have been stripped or their leaves and in some cases even iiio crown has been eaten the larvae feed motly at night and remain under clods or earth at the base of the plants in the daytime on dull days some feed ing occurs from reports already received it is thought that the insect is present in great numbers in many sections there is no cause for alarm how ever as all that is needed is the prompt application of the proper con trol measure which is the application of poisoned bran to the fields where tho cutworms are feeding or to the rows of sugarbeets or other crops poisoned bran bait is made by mix ing bran 25 lbs paris green 41b and molasses 1 qt to which i added enough water to make the mixture moist and crumbly but not wet it generally requires about zh gallons of water for each 25 lbs of bran all ingredients should be thor oughly mixed the bait is then thin ly spread on the soil along the sugar- beet rows or broadcast over the fields where the cutworms are feeding the bait must bo applied in the evening so that it will bo moist and attractive en tho cutworms are active they will not eat driedout bait in broad casting 25 lbs of bran will treat from one to one and a half acres but when applied to rows of plants it will not do nearly as large an area all that is needed is a small quantity of bait spread thinly along tho plant rows if the cutworms are very abundant crops suolt as sugarbeets should be protected by a dusty furrow as is used in armyworm control plough a deep furrow around the field from which the cutworms are migrating keeping the landside ot the furrow toward tho crop to be protected af ter the furrow is ploughed a log should be dragged back and forth in it until a good dust much is obtained the larvae are unable to make their way up the steep dusty side ot the furrow if tho worms are very num erous holes could be dug in the bot tom of the furrow at short intervals tho worms will fall into these where they may be killed worms also can be killed as they enter the furrow by spreading poisoned bran bait along it edge poultry and livestock must be kept away from the areas where poisoned bait is used as they will readily eat it nature is helping considerably in the control of this cutworm as many of tho cutworms are parasltcd by a made careful study growing old process winnipeg free pres there is at perhaps this minute in a deep chair on a verandah at lakewood new jersey a
