council has not taken kindly to the new system for the handling of oldage pen sions which the provincial govern ment will put into effect on jan 1 1935 and which dispenses with the local pension boards complaints are piling in to the government from many other counties the matter was brought up when the committee on old age pensions tabled its final report for the year and in it urged the council to bring pressure on the government to ex- ompt york county from tht propos ed changes the committee claim ed that york with a population of 230000 was the second largest municipal corporation in the province and that with only one in every 116 of its population with an old age pension and operating at a minimum expense as it had the county board had justified its exist ence in other centres the ratio of pensioners to tho population was given as follows toronto one in 75 hamilton one in 78 ottawa one in 66 and london one in 64 unequalled population increase in addition it was pointed out that the population of york county had increased 100 per cent during the last ten years a rate unequal od by any other municipality in ontario the cost of administra tion in york in any one year had not exceeded 3000 while in 1933 its contribution to oldage pensions amounted to 41000 with ap proximately 700 applications handled a copy of statistics compiled over a period of five years with reasons for keeping the present system in tact in york county was forwarded by tlie committee to hon david a croll minister of public welfare it was announced reeve harry sanders of scarboro was alone in in voicing bis opposition to the committees recommendation the report for 1934 showed that at present thcro were 2234 per sons in receipt of oldage pensions in the county with 385 new appli cations dealt with during the year of these 111 were recommended for full pension 214 for part pension and 35 refused tho remaining 35 were referred back for completion of reports and wideman being a member of tho rebol forces wideman who worked his farm at ringwood had served in the war of is 1 2 with the rank of lieutenant aud his turning over to the rebels during the general election of 1s36 is said to have been the result of his vote being challenged at new market when it became known that ho was a reformer when ordered to take the oath of allegiance he is said to have taken this as a re flection on his loyalty which as a soldier he bitterly resented tho death of ludwig wideman came suddenly ho was shot through the left temple as he rose from be hind a stump to take aim at one of the govornmtnt forces his son philip wideman was tho father of our ludwig wideman justice mcfarland in supreme court at whitby on wednesday gave judgment for the plaintiff eliza beth gertrude mcdonald of toron to against mrs ellen gertrude connor of the township of picker ing executrix of the estate in a somewhat unusual and interesting actionrpiaintiff on march 7th 191s made a separation agreement with her husband under the terms of which she was to receive a weekly allowance on a sliding scale for her maintenance in 1921 it was alleg ed she divorced her husband and at that time the payment under the agreement was discontinued the husband died in april 1934 and the plaintiff now married claimed the sum of 439600 representing the amount of arrears under the agreement with interest the main defence was that the payments under the agreement were rendered null and void after the plaintiff was divorced from her husband and they pleaded the sta tute of the limitations act tiie court held however that the agreement properly drawn up and executed was still valid and gave judgment for the full amount claimed without costs fifteen days stay was granted t k creighton of grierson creighton and fraser of oshawa conducted the case for the plaintiff and w b beaton of beaton bell ross toronto represented and conducted the case for the defend ants amount which with the thousand dollar bond now held for the water works and an additional cash sur plus of 1000 in the bank makes a total surplus for this department of 5000 this is highly gratifying in view of the very low rate prevailing here for water it is strongly advo cated in some quarters that a portion of this money should be used for relieving the general taxes of the villagers a suggestion which has considerable merit t b rae was authorized to pro ceed at once with the audit of the 1934 books of the treasurer so that the statement might be available for the nomination meeting at the end of the month heretofore the treasurers statement is presented to ratepayers meeting and audited at a later date in the new year a tentative report shows the town well financed during the past year with ample measure of achievement so in the adventure of faith in jesus christ there is at least a faint hope of being received by him second the realities of faith as seen in the lives of christians the sinful and wicked become new creatures in christ jesus and bare spiritual fruit which is seen and recognized by their fellowman thirdly the assurance of faith promises based upon the eternal word of god shall not be broken his points were well de veloped and the congregation eager ly listened to the end the evening message was based upon numbers 2310 the desire of balaam to die the death of tho righteous after pointing out the peculiarities of balaams character he declared that balaam must have been impressed by the lives of the righteous and desired such a death as they had valuable illustrations and lessons were drawn from tho text by the speaker he made it clear that only by the blood of jesus christ shod upon tho cross of calvary caii we find full pardon for our sins and be
