week at the point of the gun so to speak to choose between part ing witli some of their filthy lucre or perhaps depend on some filthy well or pool for their future water supply the trouble appeared to be that they had neglected the little detail of paying their water rates and in accordance with the village by law in that behalf those affected found the town man at their door armed with the big key which shuts off the water supply at tho street from the individual house all days of grace lapsed into months had gone and it was a case of putting up the cash or going dirty and thirsty too in every instance the necessary cash was forthcoming and tho closure was not applied we have no idea who the delin tiuent users were but the council evidently thought that they could pay and the fact that they did would indicate that the step taken was tho right one water rates like tax rates are inescapeable and the bylaw in this behalf applies to all users morgan baker again acclaimed as candidate d c date for the nomination had used his term of office as president of the north york liberals to gain support for himself at the previous conven tion tho charge flung rom the floor of the crowded convention in the aurora arena evoked a flood of pro test that the majority of tho 500 delegates disagreed with the allega tions was shown shortly after when mr baker succeeded in obtaining the nomination for the second time over dr l w dales reeve of new market the victor was given the nomination for tho old riding of north york at a liberal convention in newmarket last february when the riding was changed under tho redistribution bill it became neces sary to hold another convention prospects of a peaceful convention were bright until mr legge one of tho five nominated as a candidate approached the front of the plat form after both dr dales and mr baker had spoken some intima tion of his intention to throw a monkey wrench into the machinery was evident when he stated at the that mr morgan baker when presi dent of the association last year used the association to his advant age i have been informed that in structions went out to the delegates before the convention to vote for but the speaker stuck to his assertions i am not seeking your favor as a candidate he continued above the uproar i am withdrawing in the hope that the choice of tho association may fall upon a third man behind whom we may all unite mr baker then retired and th convention buzzed with talk presi dent j h naughton announced that the delegates would vote according to districts every care was taken that only fully accredited delegatos cast votes congratulations weft showered upon morgan baker when it was announced that ho had car ried tho convention dr dales mov ed to make the choice unanimous and it was promptly carried the convention was the first of its kind ever held in aurora and the mayor of the town dr charles boulding briefly commented upon this fact dr boulding on the plat form is a staunch conservative it is rather a unique occasion for aurora as it is the first liberal con vention ever held here said tho mayor and it is rather a unique occasion for me too he added amidst laughter for it is the first time i have ever appeared on a lib eral platform dr boulding urged his hearers not to listen to the nostrums of radi calism but to hold fast to one or other of the oldline parties he ex pressed the view that neither of tho parties was entirely perfect or en tirely bad they were manned by men who sought the best for tho citizens he declared other candidates nominated for the riding were f w kemp and dr carnet mclean both withdrew each candidate was given 15 min utes in which to outline his views mr baker attacked the governments hydro policy he claimed that queens pavk was controlled by a gang of party workers and not by cabinet ministers the only way to bring freedom to the people from the onerous cast upon them by toryism the speaker assertod was to place the party of reform in office duncan marshall liberal candi date for peel was the speaker of the fternoon he dealt with various provincial affairs and dwelt on hydro and alleged government mal administration of tho enterprise whitchurch twp publican after tax arrears delinquent tax payers in the township of whitchurch who are tenant farmers or owners with mortgago on their lands wore stirr ed into action in a very definite way last week calculated to force pay ment of tax arrears without fur ther mouths of grace collector frank steckley has kept a solicitor and bailiff more than busy for some days issuing and dis tributing warrants to seize for taxes the collector is forced to act in this matter because the law holds him personally liable for taxes should ho fall to collect by distrain on tenants or on mortgaged lands if there are goods or chattels on the promises to distrain in an effort to carry out tho law the collector is now in real action total taxes outstanding amount to 9000 hut some of this will be returned against properties as in tho case of vacant lands unlike little zacchaeus of bible days the publican of whitchurch lias not been hard on the tax bur dened people and has protected them to tho limit but now in order that he may not become personally involved for several thousand dollars a determined effort is being put forth to gather in the sheckles bought a farm last week mr f w silversides the wellknown auctioneer returned to his first love as it were when he made the purchase of a 100 acre farm in the township of scott 7 miles north
