goderich has a woodpile which stands between transients and a free meal and reports from the town say little impression is being made on it the woodpile seems to have the same effect as a smallpox card on most of the callers bernard shaw told a body of american bankers on his recent tour that they were lunatics one chap stepped forward shook shaw by the hand saying pleased to meet you brother there was unvoiled at bristol england last month the first eques trian statue of john wesley the founder of methodism the horse in sculpture is usually a symbol of the power of the sword but in this noble statue it is a symbol of the missionary ardor that sent this great apostle to carry tho word of god into every corner of england and a little later sent thousands of cir cuit riders to do the same task over the corduroy roads of canada did american tourists come to canada because they could buy beer and liquor here this matter was much before tho public in tho agi tation for the government sale ofj liquor several years ago some of j the american papers are discussing i the matter now saying that canada will lose by the fact that beer is again on sale in the united states there isnt any doubt but what some american visitors have come over ostensibly for that purpose but most of them have come to border cities sunday a holiday or a holy day paper given by mrs edward hoover at a recent meeting of altona womens institute and are really not looked upon as tourists this year will give us some idea perhaps on just how much tourist business we lose by the sale of beer in the united states but were inclined to think that the large majority of tourists from our sister country didnt come here sim ply because they could buy beer interest on your savings bank account if you are name given the first day of tho week and is observ ed as the sabbath among christian people the world over then we look up the definition of holiday wo find it is defined as a day of joy and gayety a festival day we need not go very far from home to find that sunday is being kept as a holiday in every sense of the word there may be some who do real ize from whom the great blessing comes of the sabbath or sunday as it is ordinarily called but we doubt t to what christian country would we go to find the people who never heard how we camo to have the sabbath the question naturally arises how does it come that sunday has been turned into a holiday rather than the lords day or sabbath aud as such is looked forward to as an opportunity for a weekend visit to the city or country a picnic or sight seeing trip or worse still some professional sport that is being pulled off with never a thought that it is gods day and as such should be kept as a holy- day there may bo several causes for ho increasing desecration of the sabbath but we fear that one of the greatest contributing factors is trace able to the automobile as we look backward to the time when the auto mobile first came into existence can we not see tho increasing desecration of the sabbath keeping pace with tho ever increasing popularity of the automobile the automobile is here and here to stay no doubt a wonderful inven tion it is and it may be the means of great blessing or it may be a curse it it is allowed to cause us to desecrate the sabbath or break any of gods whatsoever christ said that the sabbath was made for man not man for the sabbath just as it may bo said of the automobile if we allow it to control us instead of us controlling it it may run away with our heads hearts and pocketbooks in the first place god created the sabbath in that he ended his work which he had made and rested from all his work as we read in gen 2 2 no doubt we may take it that if god needed rest on the seventh day that we will need it also god also said remember the sabbath day to keep it holy six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work but tho seventh day is tho sabbath of the lord thy god in it thou slialt not do any work is a familiar commandment to us all death was the penalty for disobedience to this command ex 352 there is a startling inci dent recorded in the bible of a man who had disobeyed this command ment god commanded moses to have that man stoned to death just for picking up sticks on the sabbath day god had been having a hard time try ing to impress his people with the importance of absolute obedience aud thus made a terrible example of this man if god were to so discipline us today how many of us would es cape tho stoning and for more grievous offences than picking up sticks no doubt that poor man was exceptioualy busy on saturday or perhaps just forgot to gather in the extra supply needed for the sabbath the day before now- we have some otherwise good people who remain at home on the sabbath to prepare a good roast dinner for the bunch with little or no confusion let us consider for a moment what god does require of us on the sabbath first of all as before mentioned remember the sabbath day to keep it holy among other definitions holy means divine pure religion hallowed sanctified sacred the lord blessed the sabbath day and hallow ed it and it becomes us as his creatures to do likewise the sabbath need not be a dull uninteresting day nor should intelligent people talk about being bored because they are expected to respect the sabbath but will regard it as the hymnwriter expresses it day of all the week the best emblem of eternal rest there are plenty of pleasant and useful things to do on the sabbath as well as profitable not to be valued in dollars and cents but in spiritual and intellectual pleasures and de velopment ichrist said it was lawful to do good on the sabbath day christ was always round in the temple on a sabbath and we should always be found in the house of god whenever possible also visiting the sick and shutins will be pleasing to god there are special blessings and promises to those who keep the sabbath found in isaiah 5647 for thus salth the lord unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths and choose the things that please me and take hold of my covenant even unto them will i give in mine house and within my walls a place and a nameabetter than of sons and daughters i will give them an everlasting name that shall not he cut off also the sons of j the stranger that join themselves to the lord to serve him and to love the name of the lord to be his servants everyone that keepeth the sabbath from poluting it and taketh hold of my covenant even them will i bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted up on mine altar for mine house shall be called a house of prayer for all people much is being said both from pulpit and press about the world in general having gotten away from god no doubt one of the healthy signs of getting back to god will be the restoration of the old fashioned way of observing the sabbath let our cars take us to duce service and interest rates to the public now the rates have been cut but the drop has the sanction of the dominion government some time tliis year the dominion is ex pected to float a huge loan and working in league with the hanks for lower interest charges the savings deposits are the first to suffer this will tend to squeeze savings accounts over to the govern ment issue when it comes a compensating feature will he that banks have announced they will extend lower borrowing rate to municipalities which are now pay ing 5 and g per cent for money the system is faulty and materials modorate cost wo aro let the w h shaw store phone 9512 stouffville ontario walkerton times members of the toronto west presbytery of tho united church discussed salaries and living condi tions of ministers especially those in tho poorer districts one minis- tor said his wife had to go into the city and do nursing so she could earn 10 per week to try and pay the household expenses the minis ter admitted he was in debt he had hut 15 cents in his pocket and was unable to stay and partake of tho fiftycent lunch which was to follow tho presbytery meeting it is recorded also that at this meeting tho suggsestion was made that class distinctions existed among tho ministers and also that there was keen and undignified competi tion for calls to pulpits in the more i lucrative field it is not entirely possible to turn back to bible precedent in this mat ter the organization of churches the manner of their government the financing of them and the station ing of their ministers is not dealt with the present system which we use is one which wo have created in order to fit the needs of our times tho sending out of the seventy others as recorded in luke would seem to us today to be too simple and yet the fact is they were sent by the blaster himself and he it was who gave the directions carry neither purse nor scrip nor shoes they were instructed to call at such houses as would receive them and in the samo house remain eating aud drinking such things as they give for the laborer is worthy of his hire one could hardly expect that the custom of the east could he made to apply to this continent those seventy workers were missionaries of a new belief it was necessary for them to move from place to place weather conditions also permitted it and in that country to this day it is not unusual to entertain the stranger who calls at tho home and asks a meal or a bed so it is that churches have had to work out their own plan and it does seem in contradiction of all tho beliefs and teachings of any christian church that the seal of financial approval should rest with such emphasis on tho services of ministers in some of the larger churches while those in the socall ed lessor places are so reduced in earning power that their salaries aro not sufficient for decent living tho system is faulty no matter how you look at it stouffville creamery co most efficient creamery mation- whitby gazette the outstanding feature of the 1931 session of the ontario legis lature has been the redistribution bill by which the number of seats in tho legislature has been reduced from 112 to 90 this is a virtual recognition by the government that this province has had to many legislators and while the actual cash saving will not be great the moral effect of this change is bound to be substantial in spite of this reduction ontario is still overgoverned in fact that can bo applied to the whole of canada the average rural village for instance has its township coun cil its representatives on tho county council its legislature member and its member in the federal house it is subject to laws made by four separate legislative and administra tive bodies cities and larger towns have their municipal council and are also subject to tho provincial and federal bodies for a country of ten million people wo have governmental bodies which would suffice for a country of ten times that population and the overhead cost of this overgovern ment is tremendous ontario has started something hyi reducing the legislature other governing bodies might well take an example from this
