running of the sap in the maple sugar trees to the thousands of farmers who own sug ar bushes the flow of sap means however something more than the dawn of spring it means hard cash the average canadian revenue from maple- products during the last five years was over 55000000 the maple sugar production of canada is worth almost twice the honey production the first detailed pub lished account of maple sugar pro duction in canada is that which was submitted to the academy of scien ces in paris in 1755 by dr j f gaultier a physician who came from franco to quebec in 1742 it is commonly stated that the indians made maple sugar before the white man came dr gaultier in his ar ticle of 1755 however says that it was the french who taught the in dians to make maple sugar how ever that may be the production of sugar from maple sap in canada certainly goes back a long way more than onethird of the canadian happiness at the school oratory the quality of the matter delivered by the various fence corners and else where and put the unemployed to work on it up to the present time the muni cipality has spent several thousand dollars this year on relief but has received nothing in return happiness we have seen that fortune without a man behind it does not stand for much to got the best examples of this the failure of money to produce happiness you must go back with me to the year 1929 when that tragedy in stock markets occurred you will remember of a number of rich men who were in positions of great responsibility and trust at tho beginning of the financial panic some have committed suicide others have died from the affects of the disgrace which they brought upon themselves and upon their families still others have suffered tortures not so much because of their own wrong doing as from fear of dis closure yet these men were suppos ed to possess the things which make men happy they had what tho whole world is seeking so strenu ously to-day- money they lived in palatial homes and were surrounded with luxuries yet the moment mis fortune came their way what they called happiness fled as though it had the wings of a bird almost in the twinkling of an eye their foundations slipped from under them their reputations vanished and they found that their happi ness had flown with their reput ations happiness is not such a transient visitor as that real happiness is not a fluttering fly away unreality it is not superficial it does not live in things it does not depend on money it consists in facing life the right way man is built upon the plan of honesty of rectitude the divine plan when he preverts his nature by expressing dishonesty dinning of course he cannot be happy the very essence of happiness is honesty sincerity truthfulness for his com panion must be clean straight for ward sincere the moment he de parts from the right happiness will take wings and fly away what a pitiable thing it is to see the human race chasing the dollar material things trying to exact happiness to squeeze joy out of money alone how little people real ize that the very thing for which they are searching lies within them selves or no where that if they do not take happiness willi them they may hunt the world and never find it happiness is a condition of the mind it is a fundamental principle and he who does not understand this principle cannot possibly be happy real happiness cannot bo bribed by any thing sordid or low nothing mean or unworthy appeals to it there is no affinity between them founded upon principle it is as scientific as the laws of mathematics and he who works his problem correctly will get the happiness answer there is only ono way to securo tho correct answer to a mathematical problem and that is to work in harmony with mathemat ical laws it would not matter if tho wholo world believed thero was somo other way of getting the answer it would never come till the laws were followed with the ut most exactness it does not matter that the great majority of the hu man race believe there is some other wrong but nothing has ever been able to silence the voice to be happy we must be intune with this infinite within us in harmony with our better selves a clear conscience a clean life the elimination of selfish ness jealousy envy hatred are necessary to all high enjoymeutreal happiness is so simple that most people do not recognize it they think it comes from a scale from a big fortune or from some great achievement when in fact its der ived from the simplest tho quietest the most unpretentious things in the world our great problem is to fill each day so full of sunshine of plain living high thinking that there can be no commonness or unhappi- ness in our lives little kindnesses pleasant words and helps by thw way trifling courtesies and en couragements duties faithfully done unselfish service work that we enjoy love and affection all these are simple things yet they aro what constitute happiness what are the enjoyments of tho average rich is there anything more reaped iusiped unsatisfying than the chasing after that in definite mysterious something which they call happiness that will-o-the- wisp which is always beckoning them on but ever eluding their grasp that rainbow which recedes as they approach they may enjoy the temporary excitement and ex- hiliration which comes from even vicious pleasures but what of it all nothing but regret disappoint ment and disgust follow there is within every normal per son a strong desire to do some thing to be something in the world it is impossible for a human being to bo happy who is habitually idle hero is no tonic like that which comes from doing things worth while man was made to do things real happiness without achievement of some worthy aim is unthinkable ono of the greatest satisfactions in this world is the feeling of en largement of growth of stretching upward and onward if you have not kept alive your ability to appreciate the good and the true you will be as surprised to find that it has left you as darwin was when in the middle life ho dis covered all at once that he had lost the power to appreciate shakespeare and music wo ought to be able to get a good living even to make fortunes and yet have a jolly good time every day of our lives every day should be a holiday a day of joy and gladness of supreme happiness and it would be if wo lived sanely and enjoyed the little tilings of life as they go along we are living in anticipation not in reality no selfish life can ever be happy happiness is a reflection an echo a part of what we do and think it does not depend upon our material possessions it is impossible for the selfish greedy grasping thought the thought always center ed on ones own interests to produce a happy state of mind but if we sow helpfulness kindness unselfish ness we shall reap a harvest of satisfactions harmony and happi ness selfishness and real happiness never go together they are fatally antagonistic the only way to get the happi ness that is worthwhile is to live a straight clean pure honest use ful life there is no power in tho universe that can make a human be ing happy along any other lines straight forward honest work a determined effort to do ones best an earnest desire to scatter flowers instead of thorns to make other people a little better off a little happier because of our existence these are the only receipts for real happiness no man can be happy when ho despises his own acts when he has any consciousness of wrong whether of motive or act no man can be happy when ho harbours thoughts of rovengo jealously envy hatred he must havo a clean heart a clean conscience and above all god it does seem wrong to think that wo havo a right to be happy when all around us we hardships that another being inside of us that sweeten our lives there accompanies us through life a jf we face our disappointments divine silent messenger that other i sorrow defeat in the right held up dales and after turning out the cash register de camped with about 20 dales was in the store alone and was about to close up for the night when a young man walked in and asked for a packet of cigarettes dales walked over to get the cigar ettes as ho did so another of the thugs entered pointed a revolver at still tho first man then walked around tho counter and ordered dales to turn out his pockets and hand over the contents of tho till as well the third of the gang stood on guard at the door following tho robbery the men jumped into a parked car with en gine running and escaped in tho direction of tho city dales notified tho scarboro police and constable howard cramp was despatched to tho sceno of the hold up a lot of criticism has been heard in stouffville and elsewhere about veterans- engaged actively in busi ness or holding good positions and at the same time drawing disability pensions from the government es pecially in these times when tax payers are being driven almost fran tic to make ends meet surely no fault can be found witli the present proposal of the domin ion government to withold during the term of their employment tho partial or total disability pensions of those engaged in full time ser vice for themselves or at regular rates of pay if working for others as the toronto telegram sanely notes when a full pension is paid to a veteran it is on the assumption that his war service lias rendered it impossible for him to earn his liveli hood if despite the assumed or pensionable disability he engages in regular employment at the prevail ing rate of pay no hardship will fol low if the pension is suspended while his ability to work continues pensions sir arthur currie has said are not given as a reward for service but as compensation for disabilities suffered in war they are for tho purpose of making up for loss earning power because of the handicaps duo to wounds or oth er injuries payment by the government of full or partial pension as well as full salary of civil servants must bo re garded as unfair to the taxpayers including many veterans who aro not in receipt of pensions it also constitutes unfairness to unemploy ed citizens for those in receipt of total disability pension to hold a good position while at the same time drawing compensation for in ability to earn a living the federal governent no doubt had this situation in mind when the order was issued that veterans in federal employment must forego their pension payments while so en gaged tho order does not involve- cancellation resumption of pay ment in case of unemployment is contemplated implements reduced directors of the masseyharris company have decided to give for the present year a special 10 per cent discount on cash payments the allowance to apply to both new implement purchases and to pay ments on existing debts including interest accrued thereon in its announcement the board states that the feeling seems gen eral that conditions have taken a turn and that farm commodity prices- will rise we believe the announce ment of this reduction is the best contribution we can mako toward tho prosperity of agriculture and re turn of employment for our workers the icockshutt plow company of brantford also announced that it would again adopt the plan in effect in 1932 which also permits an allowance of a 10 per cent dis count on cash payments constable pugh had to point his gun at two youths from scarboro who attempted to escape on monday when being placed under arrest they were charged with breaking over 30 panes of glass in a school house in scarboro hog prices are advanc ing the iarmers heart has been cheered this week jy tho ad vance in hog prices jas crock- art shipped one car load of hogs a description was given of the from
