the funeral on sunday afternoon to stouffville cemetery was preced ed by a service held in the home and conducted by rev t laidlaw of the united church assisted by rev c e macleod of tno baptist de nomination the speaker paid fitt ing tribute to the quality of british citizenship exemplified in the life of the departed pointing out his great depth of character and other sterling qualities the pall bearers were all neighbors as follows david elias and joseph hoover abram steckley clayton stouffer and h w watson born near edinburgh scotland tho late mr turner had travelled in many parts of the world he once figured in a ship wreck off the australian coast and this rather dampened his ardor for ocean voy ages and no doubt prevented him from making even more frequent trips back to the old laud mr turner at one time was a western rancher having entered a large partnership with his brother robert in the turner valley just prior to the war days be retired in stouff ville where his first wife passed away about ten years ago three brothers and one sister survive our citizen they being dr richard and dr william turner and mrs forrest all of edinburgh scotland also robert turner at intermediates make history at markham farmer slips into scalding trougli prepared for butchering event mr sam fretz of the 9th con pickering is getting around again with the aid of a crutch following his painful accident of more than two weeks ago when the hot recep tion prepared for a porker and familiarly known as the scalding trough really proved to be the re ception placo for mr fretzs right leg which was severely scalded in a serious and painful manner it was butchering day on the farm and everything was ready for the annual event in some way just before the operation of dipping the porker in the scalding barrel mr fretz slipped his riglu foot shoot ing out right into the hot water workmen nearby luckily caught hold- of him before he could bo further precipitated into tho barrel and rushed him to the house where medical attention was promptly secured as seen by manager gordon haight on thursday january 5th stouff ville hockey club journeyed to mark ham with about 100 loyal fans pre pared to take a good old fashioned trimming which i understand has always been the case for at least the last 50 years in fact i am told it just isnt in the books where stouff ville hockey club did better than tie markham but this is a new season a new management and a real hockey team this fact being demon strated wheikthey took the ham out of markham leaving only the mark now for tho game for the benefit of those few unfortunates who did not get there owing to mild weather the ice was sticky and had some bad holes but at that there was some real hockey displayed from start to finish the game started rather slow with both teams trying the goalies from long range near the five minute mark of the first period both teams warmed up and started to bore in on the goalies but both luna u and jakie chabot hoover were in rare form stouffville suffer ed the first penalty when ken ireesor took a trip to the box for dumping this made stouffville hustle to hold markham off the score sheet reesor came on fresh from his one minute penalty broke up a markham rush at his own de fence and carried the puck the length of the ice to bare in on top of lunau giving him no chance to save the rest of the period was practically even witli both goalies making brilliant stops from close range in the 2nd period rusty nendick broke through defence twice only to be outguessed by lunau play seesawed back and forth with neither team scoring for the rest of tho period the game slowed up considerably in the final stanza owing to the sloppy condition of the ice markham nude a terrific attempt to even the score spending every man up on the attack only to be met by a stubborn defense and the brilliant goal keeping by hoover about mid way in this period roy wagg was knocked out for the remainder of tho game and required medical aid this setback however did not seem to have much effect on the team as they fought harder than ever and at last the bell rang to end a perfect evening the game was handled well by rice of whitby as referee the stouffville hockey club wish to thank the people of stouffville and community for their loyal sup port i am sure we will win the group the
