church at gormley built on the same site that was set aside for u community church there nearly go years ago located on the townlire at new gormley on the leary farm it commands an excell ent vantage point from any way you care to consider it while it was expected that the crowds would be large on sunday the attendance exceeded the most sanguine expectations and the hew church va s therefore unable to accommodate all who wished to at tend especially in the afternoon this was the dedication service presided over by elder s goudie the morning and evening services were also well attended four former pastors gave ten minute addresses at the opening service they being rev p cober of kitchener rev henry goudie of markham rev j k fidler of toronto and rev w h yates the present pastor rev a t gooding also addressed the morning service it is interesting to note that rev mr cober preached in the old church on this site from 1ss5 to 1sss and rev mr goudie from 1ss9 to 1s92 the other speakers served in more recent years ths closing service in the evening saw a familiar figure in the pulpit in c n good who delivered the closing sermon the sunday school at 2 oclock was made very interesting because of the presence of miss fidler a returned missionary from the near east miss fidler had much of real interest to tell the children im mediately following this service promptly at 3 oclock the dedicatory service was commenced in the body of the church which was filled be yond its seating capacity and the basement was also crowded where on overflow meeting was conduct ed rev s cressman of hespeler preached the dedicatory sermon while elder s goudie rendered the ritual ceremony which was follow ed by a fervent prayer rev mr cressmans address was highly appropriate for the occasion he read the 51st chapter of isaiah and based his remarks especially on these words lead me to the rock that is higher than i the speaker pointed out many instances of cases cited in the holy book where the people of god were given shelter behind rocks even the cananitcs found refuge from their enemies behind great rocks this new church ho thought would be a safe rock for the people of god to take refuge in when they are per plexed and in difficulty this is the rock of jesus the churches are the greatest asset we have today what he asked would beautiful scarboro markham or whitchurch be if it were not for the church of jesus christ they would be barren indeed said mr cressman if not for this beacon light of the church referring especially to the menno nite body he realized that they were perhaps small in numbers as compared to some others but pro phesied that god had a place for them and had given them a work to do christ is the rock of ages and on this rock alone must the church be built he said in con clusion elder goudie made reference to the financial situation concerning the new building it was reeled at a cost of approximately 8900 up to saturday night the money had all been raised in cash or promises ex cepting some 1250 the collections on sunday amounted to around 714 so that at present only a balance of 500 is required to clean the slate this is a highly satisfactory showing especially in a year when farm commodities are at the lowest level in lifetime of many people the new structure a substantial building is of red brick with shingle peak roof the auditorium of the building will seat 400 per sons including the capacity of the gallery in addition a sunday school room in the basement is a commod ious place occupying the size of tufe church with the exception of a small room at the one end designed tor a kitchen and on sunday one could smell the fragrant odors of coffee as the ladies provided for the visitors from a distance who wish ed to remain from one service to the next the committee in charge of build ing have now completed their work and include messrs chas hoover clarence donor sam donor ernest hunt james hunt frank pipher and simeon hoover mr chas hoover was chairman of the group and on sunday afternoon stepped to the platform to offer thanks on behalf of himself and his com mittee for the wholehearted sup port they had received during the past months the new pulpit and table in the chancel both rich looking pieces of furniture were made by a local artesan mr d w heise and pre sented to the congregation due acknowledgement of which was made in this public service for some good reason possibly the mennonite people who all seem to love music have foregone the use of musical instruments in their churches but the old order chang- eth the new church at gormley has an organ and on sunday partici pated in the hymns of praise and quartette selections at the various services the pastor of the church rev a t the weather may await in com fort the arrival of the funeral cort ege adjoining the rest room and under the same roof a suitable tool house has been provided for the caretaker an effort has been made to provide convenience and such the public may require though the finishing touches have not yet been added it is hoped that the means will be forthcoming to provide a few pleas ing luxuries to add to the attractiveness of the interior or to minister to the comforts of the aged the land upon which the build ing stands was recently purchased from mr peter byer and comprises the rear portion of his lot this pur chase lias made possible a much im proved view of the cemetery either from the north or from the tenth concession and will make possible a bit of landscape gardening to re place the rather unsightly bushes and small hedges that formerly were there the commissioners believe that all who in any way are interested in our cemetery are heartily in favor ct the improvement that has been undertaken but would like to ro- friends generally that being practi cally penniless the work is in a measure a work of faith in order that the people of the community and friends of the cause shying away from a drift toward political methods of attaining its ends and from any too definite form of organization which might overlap the work or pre rogatives of the ufo or similar groups tiff parent industry provin cial conference nevertheless conclud ed its twoday session here yester day by acting to perpetuate and ex pand tho work already begun after several hours of debate which carried the meeting far be yond tlie scheduled hour of adjourn ment the assembly of farmers city workers representatives and others rejected proposals for an active organization requiring a permanent central executive directing a number of local units in both rural and ur ban districts it was agreed that tho work of the conference should be continued and enlarged but along the lines which formed the basis of tlie conference just concluded and of the informal gathering of north york farmers here several mouths ago at which the parent industry was born what is needed throughout rural ontario it was decided is leadership and in spiration to educate farmers as- to how their problems may be met instead of a form of organization and a central executive being set up a committee was appointed to en courage local groups all over the pro vince to take up study and educative functions similar to that of the original parent industry assembly the committee will consist of the organization committee which fos tered the meeting here during tho past two days with the addition of mrs rose henderson of toronto re presenting labor and f g jemmett of vittoria may meet in toronto the committee was also entrusted with the task of furthering the sug gestion put forward by james mc- arthur conner of toronto secretary of tho labor party of ontario for i conference in toronto in a month of two lo which farmers would be invited by representatives of the ether big group of primary producers urban industrial workers such a gathering would be a fruition of tho farm and town alliance idea stressed at the conference just ended finally the committee was ask ed to coordinate parent industry and farmtown activities with exist ing organizations such as the ufo religious educational sociological and other bodies and foster con ferences between representatives of all groups for study of mutual problems further educational and organizational measures will be promoted as thought necessary by by tho committee and another provlncewido conference called if deemed advisable prior to the consideration of organization and perpetuation of activity by the conference as whole the advisory council yesterday fail ed to agree upon any definite re commendation for submission to the general assembly proposals for recommendation were submitted to the council by w c good of paris president of the cooperative union of canada and arthur hawkes publisher of the newmarket era and secretary of the parent industry organization committee both later resubmitted their plans to the general assembly of the conference with the result that the conference endorsed both but eliminated from mr hawkes plan his proposal for a closelyknit federation of primary clubs in rural and urban districts together with affiliated organizations show fear of politics tlie conference approved of mr hawkes suggestion that the farm and town alliance should carry on educative propaganda and study in harmony with the basis of the parent industry conference but shied from the idea that it might become too definite a body with a danger it might be manipulated for political purposes the concluding session yesterday also passed several resolutions prin cipal among which was one intro duced by morton larsen of burford asking the provincial government to assist with longterm lowterm loans through the provincial savings banks efforts of local groups of farmers to launch cooperative marketing and manufacturing enterprises such as creameries and packing plants and direct market ing agencies a number o resolutions were passed regarding taxation asking tor legislation to permit rural municipalities lo accept the taxes duo at the end of any year in in stalments spread over the following year to postpone payment of pro vincial road levies and to suspend temporarily penalties for late taxes it was also voted to urge levy on a provincial income tax accompanied by reduction of municipal taxation the conference also endorsed f g jemmotts resolution calling for a moratorium on mortgage debts sub ject to tho discretion of local courts and for lower interest rates on farm lans comprehensive organization of farmers preferably by autonomous county units was advocated at the morning session by rh smith of fergus reeve of west garafraxa township organization to the hilt should be implemented by stringing up of any farmer who refused to support such county units ho asserted government officials should not be paid more than 5000 a ycat he be lieved not excepting tho promler short selling and other market specu lations were blamed by mr smith for tho low price of wheat mall empire stouffvimik baptist church rev w1v fleischer pastor sunday november 8th 1000 am bible school 1100 am
