tlie family still num erous in different localities but not many of the name are in tin im mediate district from which the couple o one hundred years ago came i note your remarks about mr jenkins being a marrying minis ter as also your conclusion about the number of runaway matches i know nothing about his much mar rying before he arrived in canada but from individuals of a former generation 1 have heard an entire ly different reason given for his po pularity as a marrying minister the reasons given had its roots in tlie political controversies of that faroff day mr jenkins was not only a sympathizer with those who were fighting the family compact he was a leading figure locally in the opposition to the government of the day at that period only clergy of the church of rome the church of england and of the presbyterian churches were allow- td to perform the marriage cere mony all protestants other than anglicans if opposed to the family compact preferred being married by a presbyterian minister rather than by an anglican and as mr jenkins was for several years the only presbyterian minister between the bay of qulnte and lake huron he was known far and near and presbyterians baptists methodists mennonities and quakers came to him to lie married they came on foot on horse back and by the sleigh load it is said that on one occasion a sleigh ing party brought eight couples to him to he married the octuple ceremony was performed after which the numerous bridegrooms groomsmen assisted no doubt by mr jenkins lusty sons cleared the snow from a level piece of ground where ail danced a happy ending to an occasion upon which so many people had been made ltappv a century ago mr jenkins was a notable personage in this part of ipper canada and interesting tales could be told regarding him the house which he built for him self and which was the scene o much of his multimarrying activ ities is still inhabited and is one of the most commodious and best preserved dwellings in the district it is surely worthy of having plac ed upon its walls a tablet by the historic sites committee of the on tario historical society personal mention mrs hugh w watson
