ave were preferred against them in police court wilson 23 simpson 33 pleaded guilty and were sentenced to one year determinate and six months indeterminate in the ontario reformatory they wcre then hand ed over to the county authorities on a charge of breaking into the stouff ville stores ycssoys good work after chief constable vessey of uxbridge arrested the men he tele phoned toronto police and detective sergeants crowe and mcallister were sent to uxbridge by sergt arthur levitt investigations result ed in the men being charged with stealing two automoniles in the city and breaking into three stores at stouffville the men gave their names as edison wilson 23 and vaudel simpson 33 of albany ave but on checking that address the police learned they resided at 1009 bath urst st detective sergeants alex ander and skinner visited the bathurst st house and recovered a quantity of dresses and other goods stolen from stores in stouff ville the men told the uxbridge chief they had borrowed the car from a friend but detectives crowe and mcallister found the car belonged to mr anderson who did not know it was missing returning from uxbridge the police car stopped at buttons hard ware where the proprietor identi fied a hash light as belonging to him also mr button mr tait and others who happened to be on hand recognized wilson as a former citi zen up to this time wilson de clared he had never been in stouff ville and knew no one here saturday morning constable pugh arrested robe cameron also of 1000 bathurst street as the third party implicated in the local robbery young wilson was brought here a second time on saturday enroute lo uxbridge where he recovered and handed over to police a revolver stolen from buttons the weapon belongs to constable pugh who left it at the store for repairs when wilson was placed in the cell at urbridge he secreted the revolver in the cushion of the bench cell it was loaded on arresting wilson his companion fled and constable vessey did not take time to search wilson but locked him up and then took after simpson whom he caught in a lane remanded for sentence on monday morning the trio wer again brought into court and all three pleaded guilty to the stouff ville robbery and asked for leniency on the ground of having nevei been in trouble beware the magis trate remanded them until friday for sentence alfred b hoover died at his late home on church street early mon day morning over a year ago he suffered a severe stroke and had been seriously incapacitated since which culminated in his death this week as a son of one of the widely known pioneer families in the neighborhood mr hoover was high ly respected he was in his 09th year born on the ola hoover home stead at mongolia now owned by wm renniehe was one of quite a large family born to the late mr and mrs daniel g hoover he was nearly 40 years of age when he left the farm to take a position with the massey harris co with his headquarters at stouffville as a young man he married mary steven son and the couple located on the homestead until they moved to town thirty years go mr hoover took the census in markham town ship and for- some years he served as a councillor in the township a man of genial disposition he was very popular besides his devoted wife and an adopted daughter marjorie he is survived by one brother lud of stouffville and by three sisters mrs nelson mowder stouffville mrs sarah hare mark ham and miss mila hoover of tor onto this is the second bereavement in the family within a few weeks miss jemima hoover another sister having percy puterbaugh of maple cele brated her birthday at the home of her daughter mr and mrs earl tail lincolnville the play which the ladies of the w a of melville church put on in stouffville last thursday evening was very poorly attended whether owing to being poorly advertised too many counter attractions or that stouffville are unappreciative of a play which was well worth hearing and seeing we do not know what might have been a tragedy but turned out tojic a comedy occurred to one of our seventh line farmers one day last week while in the act of lighting his pipe a spark fell unobserved on his trous ers thats the tragedy the comedy occurred when he noticed a largo hole burning in his overalls which caused him to leap frantically in the air- ferwin hyde minister of stouff ville and church hill christian churches was ordained to the sacred ministry in the memorial christian church here last sunday mr hyde served the churches on the centre field as assistant pastor before taking up his duties as pastor of the circuit he is now serving he has been quite active in the work of this conference and is president of the ontario youth congress for the past two years mr hyde has been one of a select group who meet in dayton ohio to plan the youth program of the church tho ordaining council consisted of the following rev g a conni- bear who preached the ordination sermon assisted be present the 106th annual session of the conference of christian churches in ontario which was in session at memorial christian church stouff ville from june 17 to 21 came to a close sunday evening with an oldfashioned gospel service led by rev g a connibear president of the new york state christian con ference the conference was very successful in every respect and many important decisions affecting the future of the conference was reached the session was opened officially by rev f l meadows of new market who was reelected as presi dent for the ensuing year rev e morton of stouffville was elected vice president mr e b hoover was elected as treasurer and mr free man pollick of keswick elected clerk mr eli lehman of altons and mr woolfaith lazenby church hill to the board and mr ii g kellington and j n dales and c e fockler to the educational board of the conference an event of far reaching import ance was the unanimous vote of the conference to ask admittance into the n y state congregational conference which will soon be known as the congregationalist christian conference of new york anovontario there will be no change in the act of constitution annual sessions will be held as before another item of interest would be the appointing of rev f e hyde and j g halse to confer with a committee from the ontario disciples whereby we might enjoy a closer fellowship between the two groups an interesting event was the ordination of f erwin hyde to the sacred ministry outside ministers came in and rendered a great service to the conference rev g w hunter pastor of olivet congregationalist held theundevided attention of his listeners on wednesday as he urged his hearers to seek the companion ship of jesus as a possible solu tion to many world difficulties on thursday night an inspiring message was given to those attend ing tho y p congress meeting when rev rhodes thompson pastor of hillcrest church of christ desciples toronto presented a challenge to youth as well as age to follow the christ on friday night a very interest ing missionary program was given by the wms presenting the new worldwide mission activities of the new united congregationalist christ ian church ot united states and ontario visiting ministers from the unit ed states included rev f e gaige and wife of milford n j and miss ina henion licentiate ot new jersey conference all contributed a lot to the success of the conference much credit is due to the pastor of the churches on the centre field and to their congregations for their special part in making the con ference a success the invitation of bloomington for the 1932 conference was accepted retired farmer passes aged 82 following a period of long illness henry elson passed away quietly at his home opposite the public school on thursday afternoon june istli for long months he had been al most helpless and while for a few- years he had been in very feeble condition he was a man who did not show bis advanced age he be ing s2 years and four months old old mr elson was a prosperous farmer in his day he being born on a farm near claremont and as a young man farmed in uxbridge township north west of the same village he was regarded as a successful farmer and 14 years ago in the latter days of the war he held one of the best auction sales in that part of the country following which he retired to stouffville twico married he is survived by a large family to his first wife who predeceased him many years there survives eight children namely james elson of glasgow albert ot the lotli concession john of picker ing henry of toronto mrs morga- son of stouffville mrs t hardy of claremont mrs davis of whitby and mrs thompson of toronto his second wife was mary jane cunningham who survives the aged husband together with one daughter florence mrs wesley roadway david elson of uxbridge township is a brother to the de ceased the funeral on saturday after noon took place to altona cemetery the service was conducted by rev e
