is a son of the wellknown frank cooper j and a brother to our newest merchant chas cooper at once offered restitution without investigating his own liability in the matter only the unwillingness of frank billby attended the funeral of his father at green river on saturday we sympathize with frank in his loss on monday evening the school hoard wrestled with a grist of applications for the vacancies on the public school staff there are two appointments to make and no less than 200 applied for the posi tions in view of the fact that the inspector ruled that the board should engage only those teachers who hold kindergarten primary or a supervisors certificate in music should be appointed to the staff it cut out no less than threequarters of the applications at once even then the task was not easy some 25 teachers had made personal application for the positions and several very capable young women interviewed the board but none of them held the nocssary certificates it was finally decided to request certain applicants from outside points to present themselves for a personal interview and if the members are impressed with the prospective teachers appointments will be settled promptly teachers are expected here this week as far away as ingersol on the one hand and little britain on the other by reason of engaging a teacher holding a supervisors certificate in volcal music the ratepayers will not have to engage a music teacher from outside as was done last term our own teacher will be qualified to do this work and the board will draw a special grant by reason ot the qualification of their teacher applications for the position nado vacant in the principalship or the continuation school are not so readily secured and the number of replies to advertising was some what disappointing however the board is now in touch with a teacher with wide experience who if secured will meet we believe all the requirements of the local school the appointments to the local staff are all likely to be settled on saturday of this week one high school mathematlc and science teacher will be here from the ottawa valley section to meet the board this saturday in respect to the appointment contract for culverts and with interest last week the business mens association of stouffville received n cheque from mr delbert holdcu the local ford agent for 225 plus interest from the time last fall that mr holden intimated that he would make his gift to the community al that time it had not been decided to erect a clock tower and nothing definite was in sight on which the money was entitled to he spent later it was decided to construct a tower and mr delbert has handed in his cheque the gracioiisness with which the genial agent makes the gift is only further exemplified in the fact that mr holden included the interest accruing during the time he hold jtho money for our benefit communication editor the tribune as a whitchurch taxpayer who lias been instrumental in bringing other taxpayers to the township may i comment in your columns on a situation which can at best be de scribed as peculiar recently the whitchurch council passed two bylaws one prohibiting miniature golf on sunday the other forbidding bathers to undress in their automobiles upon the public highway or to appear there clad only in bathing suits the first of these bylaws has been enforced rigidly enforced but the second is being utterly ignored as any member of our council can see who chooses to motor on the roads adjacent to musselmans or wilcox lakes people still undress in cars and parade the roads sometimes most unbeautifully in bathing suits why mr editor why make fish of one bylaw and flesh of the other can it bo that the police force of the township is inadequate surely not or can it be that tiie council is passing laws without con sidering the effect that these will have on the community is it not the opinion of your readers that the bathing by-law- should he enforced as rigidly as the other at least people wear clothes while they are playing golf and recreation of any sort whatever is to be permitted on sunday surely we should encourage that variety which least outrages the sense of modesty and righteousness which permeates our excellent township the comment of your readers is invited george e davies cedar beach musselmans lake council held a special meeting ia the hall at unionville on monday evening june sth for the purpose of letting the contracts for four concrete culverts a johnsons side- coad between concessions c and 7 on the almira sideroad west of spolyords corner on the third con cession at lot 14 and between con cession 3 4 at lot 20 respectively reeve gohn in the chair with ail present excepting councillor ronnie who was reported sick engineer babcock was also present tenders were received from patterson con struction co s2s7500 w e tidy 257500 and h h powers 240000 it was moved by w f kincaid seconded by w h clark and carried that ii a babcock be authorized to let contract to c h powers of unionville to build rour culverts as per specifications said contract price to be 2400 mr frank roberts was also heard en the question of drawing sand and stone for the above structures the matter was left in the hands of engineer babcock who considered that mr roberts price was satis factory therefore we gather that frank gets the job the sixtli concession through unionville was a pertinent question mr babcock stated that with the assistance ot road supt maxwell he had dug down through sand for four feet and then struck standing j water like the old fable of the man building his home on the sand reeve gnhn stated that in tiis opin ion it was one of the worst situa tions in york county questioned as to the advisability of using a centre drain tile mr babcock stat ed he didnt think a tile would be worth a rap owing to sepage of the wet sand he rafnered favored a centre ditch filled with two or three inch stone as a solution of the problem deputy reeve smith sug- guested laterals as a method of taking away surplus water engineer babcock roughly computed that the ditch and laterals would take 410 ton of stone at a cost ot approximately 1500 or as reeve gohn joculary remarked enough to pave the road mr babcock cited an instance in york township near the dunlop farm when this method had been used and had proved highly satis factory the question was discuss ed from all angles and the reeve stated that he thought it poor busi ness to spend 1500 on a patched- up affair when 4000 would make a permanent job council decided to give mr babcock plenty of time to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion as it was a rather dirty situation deputy reeve smith was not satisfied witli the material being used on the seventh and adjoining sideroads the same being a mixture on sand and stone mostly sand 9s sand to use his own words road supt maxwell was instructed to look into the matter at once council adjourned to meet july 6th the scribe colorful ceremony ontario hospital among the churches stouffville nurse graduates- four others taking course last friday evening it was the privilege of ye editor to attend in
