council that there is no scarcity of compet ition in the trucking business was evidenced by the fact that in all there were is tenders submitt ed and the prices were as a whcle lower than in previous years the council has planned to spend approximately 11000 in gravel this year so numerous were the tenders that the members of council were faced with a big task in pick ing out the best offers so it was agreed to adjourn until they would receive a report from the road superintendent on the various prices and the quality of gravel or stone offered oy the various tenderers on receipts of this report a special meeting of markham township council was held in the council chambers on monday may is with reeve gohn in chair all members being present it was de cided to use practically all crushed material for township roads this year there were complaints from motorists and ratepayers of coarse gravel with cobble stones in it rolling around on tho road also of fine sandy gravel being used this toronto ramblers with jack neilson calling admission 50c and 25c a message from the premier on the subject of highways and highway safety probably no single development in the history of our province has had more widespread influence upon the lives and habits of our citizens than the automobile ontario was one of the first provinces to recognize the importance of this modern means of transportation and first also to adopt a progres sive policy of road building and road maintenance today of ontarios 72000 miles of roads more than 38000 miles are improved gravel 7000 miles are paved and 69 per cent of all roads are surfaced i these roads are not only a remarkable convenience but as well they are a responsibility the seriousness of the responsibility is evidenced by the fact that in ontario last year 524 persons lost their lives through automobile accidents all available statistics would seem to indicate that most of these accidents were avoidable and were caused by either thoughtlessness or wilful violations of the commonsense rules of the road tho ontario department of highways is about to publish in the press of ontario a series of educational advertisements in which an effort will be made to keep drivers and pedestrians alike alive to the necessity for the continuous exercise of care courtesy and commonsense in the use of our highways suggestions mado in theso announcements will bo in effoct a digest of all tho information gathered from every section of the world which has been found to be of assistance to drivers and pedestrians in avoiding highway accidents and making these same high ways of inestimably greater value arid benefit to every citizen the first of tho announcements referred to will be published at an early date your attention is invited thereto and your cooperation in making our streets and highways safe is earnestly solicited premier
