a sale on this week a year ago they had a similar one in fact it is an an nual affair to stimulate business at a quiet season of the year continu ing the echo says we printed the bills and we have been comparing the prices of 1930 and that of 1931 it is surprising what a difference there has taken place in the course of a year just as a sample flour has dropped from 365 to 229 salmon from 22 cents to two tins for 23 cents 20 pound pall of shortening from 299 to 249 cheese from 25c to 22c p g soap from 6 for a quarter down to ten for 33c coffee from 57c down to 39c canned peas from 10c straight to 4 for 25cjars of marma lade from 29c to 23c tea from 55c down to 39c these reductions are picked at random out of the list and but illustrate that a dollar bill will buy a lot more value in a grocery store in 1931 than it would in 1930 one other thing it brings out is the necessity of getting your stock turned over quickly and into cash lest in this continually dropping market ones profits made in the daytime disappear while one is sleeping at night the stock on the shelves is losing value by depreei- tion of prices we presume that in dry goods boots and shoes and other manu- factured lines the same thing in a j more limited extend exists and i brings out the truth that under pre- sent conditions of business eternal vigilance is the price of success keep things moving to avoid loss by natural depreciation in values most of us have seen the period when goods were dear and stuff was advancing day by day so that a man was often making money by not selling today then money was plentiful the reverse exists now money is scarce and goods plenti ful so that keeping things moving getting the money is the order of successful business at present the canadian chautauqu special 159 on the arst day of january the whitby gazette and chronicle pub lished an account of a cattle thiev ing case and in the subheading used in error the christian name of a man other than that referred to in the body of the article after discovering the error the paper pub lished an apology but the complain ant refused to accept this and in stituted proceedings for libel and defamation of character when the case came up before the su preme court and the evidence heard the jury unanimously decided that the paper had done all it possibly- could to rectify the error and that the complainant suffered no damage to his character and recommended to the judge to dismiss the action justice kelly said in reference to the complainant i am quite con vinced he was out for law i dont encourage any such conduct and saddled the plaintiff with all the costs when newspapers inadvert ently reflect on the character of an individual and do all in their power to reinstate him in public esteem by retraction or apology the courts generally expect that this will be acceptable to reasonable people an announcement of great im portance to automobile owners and insurance agents of ontario today experience what those of the days that are in the distant past in that they have only one pair of boots for the winter months and when any repair was necessary why of course that boy had to trot of to the shoe maker and sit there un til the necesary repairs were made and that some times without any dinner o yes times have changed somewhat and now boys are not only equipped with winter shoes but summer also with hockey and all the rest tossed in as i think of our boyhood days and the gibes some of us iiad to bear because we were taken to sunday worship without any shoes or coat bear foot yes really and have other boys point the linger at us because they were more fortun ate in having both shoes and coat also of eour50 such conditions do not now obtain in any of our rural communities but they do in other communities perhaps not so tar distant either me thinks i can still feel some of the bumps that were a very usual experience in going to the meeting as they were called in those days in the old heavy farm wagon where the springs were all in the hup and driving over the roads of those days for eight or ten miles to a sunday service was no joke to say the least with fire wood in the more an cient days which could be had for the cutting or pay two dollars cut and coal almost unknown in these communities when contrasted with the present prices of these com modities one is forced to conclude that it costs more to keep warm etc than it did in former days will former prices ever return of the accident this writ againsi i insurance company who is well the town was made to
