roy an enthusiastic meeting of the business mens association was held on monday evening with tha president dr ira freel presiding he announced that the money for the new memorial tower had all been arranged and was ready for the council to proceed with the building just as soon as arrange ments were completed for the pur chase of the clock with the donor of the new public timepiece this information was received with real satisfaction and all went away with visions of a line tower and clock dials that will be illuminated after dark so that it will render a lull 24hour service while the money for the tower is assurred to the satisfaction of the council it is still necessary to pro ceed with a live subscription list to reimburse the men who are financ ing the scheme in tho meantime they have pledged the necessary funds in the belief that the citizens and former residents will come a- long witli the necessary subscrip tions to erect this memorial gift in recognition of the handsome gift of the fine clock so generously given by a former citizen a member of a family very highly revered in the community new business taken up at the meeting included a discussion on ways and means of providing better market accommodation in town the prospect and need of a cann ing factory here in the midst of one of the best vegetable sections in the province and the desirability of introducing a talking picture show no definite action was taken on these matters as no one seemed offer any concreate suggestions that might be followed out it was pointed out that so far as a market is concerned stouffville could never regain tho prominent- she once had as a market town the coming of the automobile and the buying by truck direct from the farmer had changed all this others however declared thai if more suitable quarters were prdyid ed at least we could improve the present situation after appointing a committee to act on the invitation of the council with that body in viewing the tenders for the cljck tower the meeting adjourned to assemble at the call of the president examination dates announcement is made by the department of education that the annual departmental apologies after being bonedry for a long spell the wells are taking on a new lease of life refreshed by the recent rainfall what a relief two weeks ago we noticed some thing in the melville section of the tribune concering allin lewis and a twohundred pound calf mr lewis wishes us to say that in his opinion those melville correspon dents should take a short course in agriculture and then again he re marked that if the drovers judged calves like that id make money far be it from us dear readers to discredit any of our friends efforts but this miniature bossy truly weighs about 140 lbs at tha present date so well place his weight of two weeks ago at 125 lb on the hoof we turned out for a spell to a euchre the other night held by the markham township war veterans in the municipal hall at unionville this was the fourth of a series which have been put on the pro ceeds o go for relief work in the township the prize winners were as follows mens high score mr john miller second mr hugh beckett lone hands mr saxsby and the consolation or booby prize- mr james maccartney results for thejadles as follows high score imrs percy cooper second mrs findlay lone hands miss drew kelly consolation mrs j hood in presenting tho prizes warden wes colin commended the veterans organization on the work they were doing also explained that this body was sort of an offshot of the north york veterans he hoped that there would be more in the future add congratulated mrmiller on obtaining fifty points more than he mr gohn did we were low toothe trial feature was a cushion with the 19141 s veterans inscrib ed entirely with pins the number was seventeen hundred and some thing and the prize a pound box of chocolates was won by mr clark young of mihikcn the scribe the bride of joseph russel sprox- w uau 225 ton son of mr and mrs w 11 jioldcn celebration fund 225 spruxlon of newmarket the mrs janres mccullough 50 ceremony was performed by rev ilial required s50 g w lyud of aurora pastor of the contracting parties stouffville is blessed with affec- arthur cullen oraugeville ap- i peared before magistrate falconer and pleaded guilty to having omitted to tag potato bags as required by section g ss 1 a of the root vegetables act and was assessed 10 and the bride charmingly attired in white satin made in low lines her long veil being caught in cap effect with orange blossaias and carrying a beautiful bouquet of ealia lilies entered the drawing room on uw arm of her father to the strains of lohegrins wedding march played by miss marjory graham and took her place beneath an arch most artistically arranged with ever greens pink and white carnation and wedding bell she was attend ed by her sister dorothy may in a tionate interest in community wel fare not only among the present residents but also among those who may have passed happy hours of their childhood in our midst or been associated with us as one of the stalwarts among our business men this desirable state is probably due to tho harmony that has exist ed since our incorporation there being remarkable freedom from political religious and business rancor a big factor in leaving pretty dress of rich pink taffeta i pleasing memories to those who have passed to other communities this happy faculty is well illus trated by the munificent gift of 2000 from one who spent child hood and adult life in this muni cipality our former citizen is don ating 2000 to buy a clock and bell having noted the need of same by editorial comment in tribune which will ornament the town and please the present resi dents although the donor lives many miles in the neighboring republic the large sum of 2000 is amply sufficient to purchase a clock and bell by the same maker as that which delights the neighbor hood residents of the university of toronto and parliament hill ottawa yet this bell and clock must be properly boused in a sturdy brick tower on our present fire hall which will cost 1350 on account of a 100000 pave ment being laid throughout our main street the reeve and council feel that no further taxation should be levied at the present time the business men by personal note to the bank of commerce have- obligated themselves to raise the 51350 without any cost to the taxpayer so that the corporation may immediately contract to build a brick tower housing this splendid gift from a former citizen the business men intend hold ing field days garden parties etc to raise funds and also have a hope that the old boys and girls may come forward with contributions big or small to help in the good work all such subscriptions will be acknowledged in the tribune and the names of the donors written in the municipal archives and possi bly if though desirable the names of the subscribers would be suit ably engraved on brass plates to be hung in the tower mrs jas mccullough has graciously startel off the fund with the generous git of 50 and carrying talisman roses while the groom was ably supported by herbert dawson ilisey during the signing of the register mrs roy imorley cousin of the bride sang from all the world pve chosen you accompanied by miss lottie atkinson of aurora held in york county this year took place on the j farquharson farm at victoria square the sals originally advertised for march 10 was postponed to the 19th owing to the snow storm while a casual observer in the morning felt it would be impossible to dispose of so much in a few hours yet everything was put under the hammer and sold with excep tion of the tractor lunch was provided to one thousand a unique feature of the lunch was the enclosure of a card bearing an important scripture verse in each bag judging from the loquacity of some such verses were not too often considered by them selling commenced at 11 am and continued until nightfall fifty two head of cattle a number of horses sheep and swine went under the hammer as well as a long list of implements and farm machinery the highest price paid for a cow and calf was 140 and horses brought as high as 170 in all the sale realized in the neighbourhood of 7000 which was very satisfac tory considering the general period of depression in addition half the proceeds was in cash implements were perhaps the one article poorly bid on and went rather draggy prentice prentice were the auctioneers mennonite church s s sbantz
