it was in a frame building on the north side about where the misses stouffer live then removed across to a brick building ou what is now in the publio school site oh what a scrap there was be tween the two tactions one support ing its removal to the new business centre west of the swamp and the other wanting it to remain on the hill there was a distinct division between the two parts of the village in those days the low sec tion near the creek east of jermans blacksmith shop being mostly swamp land and not developed the citizens of the older village at the corners felt it a hardship indeed that the post office should be taken so far away later arrangements were made to have mail delivered for those who desired it and paid a fee for the privilege to the east end store now kept by mr leavens little the citizens of that day thought that a fine government building such as we have would ever be erected in stouffville old timer iloa register dont give a newspaper a dol lar such is the advice spoken by a wellknown merchant over the radio recently ho was directing was j his remarks to business men in now j small towns and cities dont give the newspaper a dollar ho empha sized instead buy twice as much advertising as you think you can afford for a period of one year then watch your business grow the newspaper he said is an accurate mirror of the town which if serves it your town is a live town one that can meet the intense competition of today the newspap er will be filled each issue with snappy invitations to trade at the various stores of that town your newspaper is your weekly or daily contact with the people of your trade territory use it liberally and you will be surprised at the results the merchants in any commun ity where a real newspaper is pub lished could afford to pay the sub scription of the paper for every resident within thirty miles they would get their money back many times over by increasing contracts for advertising messages boost for your newspaper it is always boosting the community and the boost you give will pay you hi dividends cut in allowances on emergency measure announcement is made that the government has not adopted any policy whereby soldiers allowances are to be cut owing to the in adequacy of the amount voted for these allowances for the present fiscal year which ends march si february and march payments had to be reduced and this fact gave rise to a report that the reduction would be permanent protest meet ings were hastily organized in many centres before an official statement explained the situation i the funds voted would ordinar- ily have been sufficient for the year general conditions however during 1930 brought more veterans than customary into the ranks of those who required an allowance to augment partial pensions in conse quence the department this month found itself in a position where it was necessary to reduce single mens allowance by 1250 and married mens by 10 otherwise it would not have been possible to make any payment next month present cuts are of an emergency character and represent govern ment necessity rather than policy at this time choral concert makes a real hit fourth annual concert of the stouffville clioral society was held in raiclitfs hall on friday evening last despite the unfavorable con ditions of the roads a large audience was in attendance indicating the interest which lias been stirred up throughout the district by the splendid efforts of this organization the chorus numbering some sixty voices was in good form and render ed the various uumuers with good effect reflecting the careful training received under the capable hands of mr ii m fletcher their conductor while the whole chorus is deserving of commendation for their excellent work special mention must be made of the splendid volume and fine tone quality of the mens section on this occasion the choral numbers were nicely varied in character and were all well done but particular mention might be made or several which appeared to carry special appeal two sacred numbers the angelus by elgar and xve verum by gounod were finely done and well received sullivans lost chord was another well sung number of the selections in the lighter vein strauss blue danube waltzes repeated from last years program by request were well rendered and were perhaps the most popular of the numbers tor full chorus a negro spiritual de gospel train arrang ed by burleigh was given an excellent rendition by the male chorus and was so well received that it had to be repeated anthony remouch the young polish violinist was again the prin cipal assisting artist this young man continues to develop and one more presented a program which carried his audience with him with the result that he was called upon for repeated encores misses anne lehman and eva hoover played a piano duet in their usual very cap able manner in addition to which miss lehman offered a very accept able piano solo which was reward ed with an encore the stouffville male quartette consisting of messrs c wideman w lehman f mar shall and dr n smith again pleased the large audience with several well rendered numbers comment on the concert would not be complete with out paying tribute to miss lehman for the efficient way in which she presided at the piano in the capacity of accompanist for chorus and violinist the success of the concert must be gratifying to both the conductor and the society and stouffville is ti be congratulated on having such a fine organization in its midst e resale depot some
