legislation passed by provincial parliament which when effective inext year would reduce the size of yrk county council provoked lengthy discussion at the council meeting in toronto last week as a result a committee was ap pointed to interview the govern ment regarding the legislation and devise ways of reducing the costs of county municipal government the committee is to report back at the present session the resolu tion deciding the above action speci fied a second resolution weut on record as opposing the legislation and decided a protest interview should be arranged with the premier reeve w e macdonald new to ronto who moved the first resolu tion explained he thought that the j legislation had not been passed so i much because council was unwieldy jaud too large but because of outside criticism regarding expenditure several held the criticism had arisen from a conception too much time was spent on the sessions yearly stipend to the argument that expenditure could be cut if councils work was complete more rapidly mr mac- donald suggested instead that 3 stated yearly stipend replace the s a day paid comity councillors the amount paid would then be the same whether the business was completed in two cays or twenty he pointed out lie suggested that a committee in terview premier henry to see if the legislation was aimed to reduce county expenditure if that is the case we might secure repeal of the legislation if the county asked for other legislation limiting the ex penditure on municipal govern ment he expplained at the beginning of debate war den wesley c gonn outlined the plan whereby the greatest represent ation from each township would be two representatives with multiple votes as there were now g3 coun cillors he said the present building would soon not accommodate the members it had been suggested the council split into two with one council for the urban and the second for the rural sections but he was not in accord with this plan council could appoint a com mittee to carry on with the work through most of the year and then council as a trhole meet occasionally to consider the com mittees work ws deputyreevo james michaels proposal this he thought would reduce twothirds of the expense and also speed up business but reeve macdonald protested the council would have to take liiobonus ror anything the committee did reduced by ten several different proposals to re duce the expense and hasten comle- tlon of councils work were pro pounded dr l w dales held the legislation would only reduce the body by ten members if the session was concluded ten ciays earlier it would save some 10000 he de clared he urged other counties be enlisted against the legislation deputyreeve j o little held time devoted to deputations by council could be reduced if the re quests were placed in hands of in dividuals of council while major a a maekenzie held champion school orators could be heard as well at rural fairs thus saving some of councils time speed up work speeding up of work was reeve r m leslies suggestion to cut costs reeve w j cardhouse maintaining the couuty was the most economic ally managed in tne province the premier knows we have no solution said the warden and un til we have one the legislation will stay on the books the committee appointed consists of messrs macdonald gardhouse wallace dean kellam e m legge and j o ontariocountyoiiicuis be cut 20 per cent in the interests of economy ana lower taxes w j h phiip of brock township provoked a heated discussion in the ontario county council last week in whitby the motion moved by reeve philip and seconded by geo johnston of cannington called for a 20 per cent reduction in all salaries paid to county employes in the face of opposition and objections the motion was withdrawn and allowed to stand as a notice of motion the motion was immediately chal lenged by reeve a w jackson of whitby and deputy reeve r m doverell of whitby as well as other representatives of southern munici palities the split in the ranks of council observed on previous days on the appointment of committees was again apparent as the members divided on the question j b ross of thorah since we last appeared in this column there has been a number of changes the twp coun cil was overhauled with a resulant number of new faces county council being in session at the present time the brethren are so journing in the city learning the i113 and outs we had the pleasure of visiting the council chambers on adelaide st last week the day following that on which reeve wc gohn of imarkham township was elevated to the lofty post of war den the vote was close a margin of three being all that saved our hopeful from defeat the result was a popular one however because not even wesleys moat bitter critics can gainsay the fact that our reeve knows his onions if we may use a term like that in describing a warden we were glad to see such splendid support given him by local reresentatives in looking over the art gallery we noticed two former wardens who came from our domain the same being mr g b padget and the late jonathan nigh we understand that the council meeting of tiie township is postponed until february 10th owing to a committee meeting in toronto perhaps we shall be able to give you a line on this when it transpires the chief topic over the week end was the superfluous quantity of snow which found a lodging place in our highways and byways on satur day morning everything was white ness and the milk men were com pelled to deliver their product to the eiglith line then the local gang swung into action and by nightfall the two sideroads from of dr s l freel dr ira and tli when the congregational church was on the south side of main street near tenth st the church was a square wooden building with a heavy frame construction built from virgin pine by the late rev ludwig kribbs who came io stouffville as a missionary and organized a missi on church in the very early days of y stouffville tnm the organization meeting was held at the mertens farm home just west of the village where descendents of this pioneer family still live and in the young church then constituted were representatives of a number of wellremembered families includ ing the nichols millards treacys lehmans robinsons barnes blackies stennets morris and widemans mr kribbs the early missionary was a competent carpenter as well as an elequent preacher and person ally supervised and executed the building of the church and also his parsonage adjoining and the fact that both buildings were many years later taken apart and rebuilt on other sites where tney remain testi fies to the good workmanship which was originally expended on them the church building after being vacated by the congregation when the brick church now occupied by the christian church was built about 1875 was used for years as a com munity hall later for a time as a rollorskating rink and finally as an implement warehouse then about forty years ago was taken down and rebuilt without its slop ing roof and hell tower where it now stands over tne creek on dr freels property and is occupied as stores by john moiikiiouso and his neighbour john chinaman the parsonage after mr kribbs left it became the home of dr freel sr and was the boyhood home the bank of nom scotia established 1832 capital second deputy reeve mr kincaid certainly has the gift of reparte down to perfection during a preelection canvass mr kincaid was told that he was too inex perienced to take a seat in the county council
