time we having been reading of into an interesting history of our cemetery from the beginning some people are asking for a financial statement from tbto beginning the recent im provements have cost a lot of money and still more is needed to mako the cemetery look like a com plete job a new fence is badly need ed along the south and west sides as the old posts are rotted off we understand there is not enough money in the treasury for this will the previous board please give some financial statement as to the hand ling of the funds in former days the canadian weekly newspapers association has just concluded its hth annual gathering which was held this year at halifax nova scotia the tribune was represented by its editor while other newspaper men were present from as far west as whiteborse yukon and new foundland on the east while we wish to tell our readers something we learned about this historic province down by the sea we will not weary you with any detail about the convention it was our business primarily to attend suffice to say that meetings were held each morning at the fine cnr hotel the nova scotian where we with many of the delegates were privileged to make our home during the visit the nova scotian was just opened in august and occasioned quite as much interest in the eastern province as the iroyal york attract ed in ontario we have been in the homes of english royalty in palaces and the like but none of them sur pass in grandeur the modern hotel of the present day while few provide the comforts and conveniences among the foremost hotel palaces of today is the nova scotian leaving montreal on the ocean limited the well appointed train of the cnr equipped with radio and observation coach one settles down to a 27 hour journey before reach ing halifax most of the night you pass through waste and forest territory consequently we sleep on in peaceful rest if you are blessed with being able to be a good snoozer aboard train each afternoon of our stay in the nova scotia capital was given over to sightseeing entertainment we reached the city on saturday evening ready for business on monday the dominion atlantic railway provided a special train on monday to take the delegates to the evangeline country stopping at kentville where luncheon was served and the party were then taken in motor cars to grand pre thus affording us a wonderful view of a portion of the annapolis valley famous for its tipple orchards and iicb fertile farm lands at grand pre we were photographed in a group at the memorial chape which stands on the grounds of the original village which dates back to 1gs0 the historical facts are most interesting but too extensive to dwell on at this time the expulsion of the french acadians from this settlement in the year 1755 will al ways remain a tragic occurrence in canadian history the event has been immortalized by longfellow to thousands and is known as the great poets masterpiece evangeline the peoples in this part of canada still retain many ancient customs on this motor trip we encountered a farmer with his team of oxen and load of hay on a twowheelcart so entranced with the ancient mode of travel we had a picture taken of the team and hope to reproduce it in this paper the farmer valued bis team at 250 and declared them more serviceable than horses in his particular section of hilly country an afternoon was spent as the guests of the halifax harbour commissioners and the dartmouth ferry commission on hoard one of their harbour boats when we in spected this one of the worlds greatest harbours halifax harbour is capable of accommodating at one time all the navies of the world so much should be said of the pott of halifaxinformation all canadians ought to be apprized of we reserve it for another article the harbour trip entailed several hours and luncheon was served on board entertainments of a musicai nature and a reception at governient house where we were guests of hon j c tory lieutgovernor of nova scotia all went to make up a happy time full of pleasure and instruction one of hie interesting things to an ontarian on his first visit to the maritimcs is the tide waters at halifax the tide is not so noticeable but long before the visitor reacnes the city on the way east from montreal he will be confronted with miles and miles of mud hanks and empty rivor beds it it happens to be low tide or nt other times possibly on your return you sec in their places beautiful streams of water winding through the country tides are another item which will make the subject of a later article before conclusion of this hasty sketch of our eastern trip the press will pay tribute to the generoushearted people of the east who gavo us such a welcome and who live in a province which is out standing in canada for its natural beauty and the romance of its history new equipment proved useless fire extinguisher didnt con tain proper mixture had no effect on blaze personal notes the new chemical fire engine purchased last year was given its first real test last saturday night when a ford car leaped into names in the west end of the town the chemical outfit proved a frizzle on this occasion first the hand chemical was emptied on the burn ing car by the firemen then the chemical hose was turned on and neither had the slightest effect the car was driven by mr hilts who was accompanied by miss margaret ramer of markham they had driven onto the new road which was barricaded to traffic and in attempting to climb the bank to get off the gas line was broken and started the fire the brigade made prompt response to the fire alarm but after finding the chemicals were ineffective had to return to the hall and bring up the old reliable water hosea dash of water soon put out the flame but not before lie body of the car was destroyed some means of testing the strength of the material mixed for the extinguishers should be had to know that they will be of some use send the
