colourful series of cards portraying the many style effects of brantford roofs for your home is6 o time to repair itniu the best lime to do any of the needed repair work on the barn or buildings is in the late spring or early summer the hay mows are then empty so that sills can be re newed posts moved if desired changes made in windows and doors ventilating hues installed and other needed equipment put iu having things handy around the barn is a great advantage iu lessening labor as well as in saving time o dangers in fenced ficln one of the greatest dangers on farms with many fenced fields is of piling up too many furrows against the fences on some farms this has been practised for so long that em bankments halt as high as the fence are around some fields persistent backfurrowing here and there will bring such land dnto shape after a time one rule should be never to plow a field the same way twice in succession with the proper laying out and handling of lands it is possible to keep fields free from objectionable dead furrows and rhlges it is the matter of having the shape of the land in mind all the time o veteran hen dies the oldest hen resident ot ber tie township wellahd county died last month after a career extend ing over twenty years she was cranny a plymouth rock owned by mr and mrs george w lawson of hidgeway hatched ill 1910 the methuselah of welland henneries had spent hor entire 20 years and one month on the same farm in her younger years she regularly hatched two broods of chicks per years and in 1930 her last working year granny was set on pheasant eggs to hatch when the pheasants were not discernible after 21 days she walked away from the nest and tail ed to return pheasants eggs take 2s clays the venerable deceased sported spurs which measured 1 34 inches she now rests under the old snow apple tree o the knrmcrs problems we are as yet in the schoolboy stage in regard to intensive agri culture in ontario was a remark recently heard nature richly en dowed the soil of ontario but there are parts where the response is not quite so brisk as formerly there must be as much returned to the soil as is removed in crops if con tinued bumper yields are to be harvested the question to decide on each farm is what is required and how may it most advantageously be applied the farms carrying a heavy stock are in the best heart but here the question of how to make the best use of the feed grown comes up for consideration o new leclurci in horticulture mr john p clark former secre tary of the toronto horticultural society and superintendent of horticulture tor the canadian na tional exhibition toronto has been appointed lecturer in horticulture lo succeed mr h j moore mr clark is an ardent horticulturist and has been closely identified with the work of the department for some time as judge and lecturer his services will ha available for meet ings etc in connection with the work of the horticultural societies of ontario which through the efforts of the ollicers and directors of the ontario horticultural association have accomplished so much in the way ot beautifying ontario during the past score of years ro- stouffville planing mill stouffville ont current crop report reports of an optimistic nature have been received during the past few days from no less than 32 agricultural representatives in vari ous districts throughout the province despite the fact that some injury was caused by cold weather in the latter part of may and growth was retarded in some sections because of lack of moisture the general theme of these reports reflects the promise ol abundant crops in a general way over the province recent rains have brought the meadows and pastures on rapidly alfalfa clover and hay promise instances fall wheat is showing excellent growth in most localities livestock is showing rapid improvement since going on the grass early strawberries suffered by reason of tho early croat but other trulls in most counties are in a satis factory condition considering the vagaries of the weather during the past two months the situation throughout ontario is very en couraging o make the meadows pay ontario usually tas about four and one half million acres of hay crops each year in passing across the province just before haying one cannot help feeling that many of these acres are not paying the taxei and the cosl handling the crop statistical reports indicate an aver age yield of only one and onehalf ions to the acre and this can certainly be much improved upon for the meadows good drainage and sweet soil are very important roots of grasses and clovers are slow to penetrate wet soils and wherever there is a surplus or water on the soil air is shut out and hence the bacterial life is either weakened or killed another point in meadow im provement is the use ot high quality seed if poor seed is used the meadow starts out with a handi cap good drainage kood seed and a liberal supply of suitable fertil izer make profitable meadows col lennox writes air ken robertson newmarket ontario dear sir june 13 1930 beg to thank you very much for your list of registrars which reached me this morning 1 cannot refrain however from saying that i ant absolutely amazed to have a man occupying a judicial position made possible not by the government but by the members of parliament re presenting both parties to so prosti tute his position in tho way that you have by with two or three exceptions appointing extreme liberal partisans as registrars i am glad to say that this has not been done throughout the province and that other returning ollicers realizing that they occupy the posi tion practically of judges end therefore should be free from partisanship have dealt with their opponents during my campaign 1 shall read to my electors of north york the names of the men vhom you have appointed so as to let them see how unfairly you have dealt with the ten or fifteen thousand conservatives who are taxpayers and voters in north york i felt that at least you would recognize the party by making some conservative appointments as registrars 1 am not suggesting that any of these men will be dishonest in the discharge of their duties but i am pointing out your extreme partisan ship for a man occupying a judicial position in other elections you were appointed by the liberal candi date and it was expected that you or any other returning officers would naturally do everything for his own party hut one would think that when you are appointed by parliament through the chief returning officer to represent both parties that you would have shown some indication of fairness this letter i propose to publish lo let the electors know how extremely unfair the north york returning officer has been to the thousands of voters who unfortunately support ihe conservative party yours truly t herbert lennox 15 pius vow sale o weeks old fred pitkoy ph 9709 jkksfv tow vow sale our by side jos alerleiis
