remembered by more than that individual about the same time that pikes barn was struck in the early evening percy pattenden was driving his automo bile from vandorf alcross the side- road just east of that village and known as vandorf sideroad lightn ing struck a large pine tree just to the south of the roadway and with in a hundred feet of mr pattenden the kirge timber crashed down across the roadway while the whole atmosphere seemed to he electrified and the shock threw the hands of the driver from off the wheel at the same instant the lights on the car went out and all was utter darkness lor some time when ir pattenden recovered his bearing lie found the car lights useless and had to grope along with the aid of the feeble rays of the sky the large timber blocked the road way and he was forced to take down a fence and drive around the obstruction if percy pattenden over passed through another experi ence of this kind hell be a fit case for a nerve specialist to see heros to you ringwood altonabloom- ington and churchill gathered at stouffville on saturday last to meet representatives of the united chunch from toronto to discuss with the members of the lolcal churches plans for carrying on of the work of the two organizations in this locality the meeting which was called at the request of the representatives of the united church was held in the local christian church and was pre sided over by rev e morton the united ichurch was represented by dr ramsey rev mr brown and rev mr miller a general discussion took place upon the matter and proposal was made to the christian church officials that they take over the work at bloomington and transfer church hill to the lemqnvllle circuit or that the vork of the two circuits be car ried on on a cooperative basis no decision was reached at the meeting hut information has reached us to the effect that the overtures of the united church have been declined and that no change will be made in the work of the christian churches here some alterations will be made with the lemonvllle circuit as the grant from the united missionary society which amounted to over 700 for the year 1929 has been with drawn it is thought probable that the united church at bloomington will be closed and that some mem bers will make stouffville their church home while others will join the christian church there boadways drug store stouffville municipal representatives of the township tot markham vaughn and north york and the village of rich mond hill this week concluded nego tiations for the purchase of that por tion of the radial line which lies be tween richmond 1111 and toronto the purchase price finally agreed to is75 000 which includes the install ation of a signal system valued at 8500 an agreement will be made with the toronto transportation commission for the operation of the road on much the same basis as the commission operates for the town of weston and the township of york it is proposed that in the three townships concerned an area extending a mile and a quarter from vongo street each way will be zoned as a transportation area and the line purchased by this defined area in much the same manner as a local improvement would be carried out to conform with legal requirements it will ho necessary to take a vote in the areis affected and steps to have this expression of opinion will be taken by the various municipali ties at once it is hardly two weeks since the proposition for the operation of tho line as far as richmond hill was first considered but in that time a great many conferences have been held by municipal councils in an effort to seoive the transportation problem the first offer from the city was that the line could he purchased for 150000 the representatives of the four municipalities with their solicitors met ait willowdale on thursday last to consider it and decided to make an offer in the hope that a better price could he obtafin- ed the members met the board of control on monday and again oh tuesday when the final price of 75000 was agireed upon the re placement value of this section of the line is placed at 155000 and the three quarters of a mile of track in richmond hill lasd two years ago by the ttc at a cost of 55000 debentures will be issued for a fif teen year term and the annual charges to meet the annual pay ment divided betweon the four municipalities municipal represent atives are confidnt that with the economies effected under the new typ of service that there will not bo any operating deficits and statistic show that with any appreciable in crease in traffic in the course of a very few yrars if not the fifrst year tlie road should carry all capital cha rges the completion of the deal will mean that transportation on north yonge street will be controlled by tile people served the municipalities concerned will own tho line and the ttc will be operators employed by the people richmond hill liberal jos grove of r- ringwood
