man a reeve herman kidd of whit church township has been appointed to the old age pension board for the county of york this is an appointment that would look good to any member of county couitc1 ami whitchurchs reeve is to be con gratulated despite the offhand expression that there were too many old women in the senate the govern ment has seen fit to add mrs norman wilson of ottawa to the upper chamber announcement of which has just been officially made broomhall estimates that from now to the time of harvesting our next wheat crop the world consum ption of wheat will be around 14 million bushels per week with such a world consumption isnt it marvelous that we have a wheat surplus that we cant dispose of profitably v the york county council last week gave their sanction for the purchase by the county reforestration com mittee of additional lands in whit church township which will be add ed to the present acreage on the sth concession north of ballantrae the thousands of pines now plain ed are doing remarkably well in the sand soil of that area and under the careful supervision of percy cutler who is the government man resident on the land the season of annual church meet ings is again past and all of them indicate that the gospel work is well maintained it is an encouracr- irig sign for any community when the people show an active interest in the churches while one hears the church criticized a great deal usually unjustly one shudders to hink what this or any other com munity would he without churches 5ven those who never darken the loots of church profit from the tmosphere at creates in the com munity and from the moral force which is generated through the your opportunjty to we still have some wonderful merchandise left over from our january clearing sale and at prices that will sell it if you cannot come to our store today tele phone in your needs and we will s right out to you we are here to serve church in the lives of individual citizens at one time stouffville uad seven bar rooms today there is infinitely more happiness and pros perity in our community with seven churches holding regular services york county council has just con cluded its january session which lasted a full tinee- weeks the mem bers pull down 8 per day which is mote than most of them would earn at home in the winter mouths but then the salaries would be easily paid if only the council could curb expenditures otherwise the tax rate is advanced again this year by one mill which places an added burden on many townships the reeves and deputy reeves from this section spoke on different occasions against additional unwarranted ex penditures and we are glad to note this the efforts of york county councillors who are favorable to assist in paying the deficit on the metropolitan railway will meet with little favor on the east side of the county in this locality if the citi zens of richmond hill thornhill aurora and other places are anxious to continue the service why do they not come out and shoulder the operating loss farmers and otheis on the east side of the county derive no benefit from the railway and have to be content with busses and with no service of any kind most of the winter still their money is tc used to try and force the city to run the metropolitan while half the people of the county dont care a snap whether it is run or not bui they are concerned about their money being used to fight the city of toronto which step- the council agrees to take the son of hon james donnelly of bruce county has been released from prison after serving ten days of a twentyone day sentence for driving a motor car while drunk medical evidence was taken to ottawa claiming young donnelly was in bad physical state which warrant ed his release the public may draw their own conclusions as to the fairness of the department of justiet at ottawa in ordering donnellys release with the fact he- fore them that the prisoners father is a liberal appointee to the senate and dr hall the jail physician who made the medical examination on which ottawa acted is the liberal member for south bruce canadian law is pretty well lminlstered in fairness to all and it may have been in this case hut the public will not he satisfied with the setup of this mans release information for busy farmer 41270 pupils in public school york county says the inspector 79c special have a thirdtclass certificate while 172 have firstclass 725 secondclass and 13 special kindergarten there are 41270 pupils attending the schools with classes divided as follows primary 21 12 per cent first class 15 per cent second class is per cent third class 23 per cent and- fourth class 22 12 per cent a few years ago we had fewer pupils in the third and fourth class es than in the beginners classes he continued total receipts for the year 1929 were 2s33908 of this amount 315050 was a legislative grant while 1339000 was contributed by i about 50000 tons of hay hav been recently exported from east ern ontario andquebec to great britain the 1929 exports crhay from canada are greatly in excess of those in the previous year ontario potatoes appreciated uood success is being attained by the central ontario potato growers association this organi zation is marketing potatoes under a brand name and graded to a stand ard above canada no 1 to january 10 thirty car loads were sold in new- sacks bearing the brand name some of the largest retail arms in ontario are now haudling this stock the price compares favor ably with that received for pota toes imported from eastern prov inces i milktesting pays there is sound common sense in the suggestion of a farmer keep ing five good cows in place of fifteen just cows the case is cited of a farmer who tired of the work en tailed by keeping fifteen cows and who reduced his herd to five good ones the surprising thing was that the net returns from the five were greater than they had been from the fifteen this should prove conclusively the value in the use of weeding out the nonpaying members of the herd by milktest ing the local department of agri culture stands ready at all times to advise the farmer in these mat ters new hog grading rules the new hoggrading laws which came into effect last september have resulted in some confusion among the less well informed breeders and shippers the new qualifications are as follows hogs shall be divided in to two classes the bacon hogs and the nonbacon hogs the bacon class is divideil into two classes the selects and bacon the stand ard for the select grade is the same except that the minimum weight is now set at 190 lbs weigted off car the second grade of bacon hogs or bacons must weigh from 170 to 220 pounds off car the first grade ofj the nonbacon class is known at butchers and its weight range runs from 150 to 230 pounds weigh ed off car all hogs of smooth flesh ing and finish not conforming to bacon standard are included in this class the old shop grade has been entirely removed and hogs under 150 lbs are known as lights or feeders and requirements for killers are filled from the feeder grade m protecting cattle the stockman must he perpetu ally on the lookout to prevent his choice or even scrub cattle from attacks by vermin particularly lice and ringworm the former are most persistent and cause much annoyance cement and heleboresix parts to one have been used but it has been found that this dries the hair linseed oil may be rubbed or sabadiila powder or some insect powder may be dusted into the hair one application may kill and clean up the pests but a new batch will hatch out and in ten days another application will be necessary water for cows cows producing large amounts of milk require large amounts of water as well as feed it makes up seven pints of every gallon of milk prod uced and is necessary for all life processes it is said that of every 100 pounds of milk produced there is contained on an average s7 pounds of water the cow requires 500 pounds of water including that in the feed for every 100 pounds of milk produced good cows should be ix memoriam in loving memory of our mother mrs catharine johnson who pass ed away
